Nurse Premed student

hey guys could you tell me how i sound as an applicant and what improvements i could make. thanks

1) im a registered nurse working in a medical unit
2) ive got a 3.5 gpa
3) i DONT have a bachelors degree, ive got an associates and will have over the 90 credits needed to apply when its time.
4) im starting premed in spring
5) im gonna start volunteering as an EMT so when application time rolls around and should have about a years experience as an EMT.
6) ive already started trying to shadow physicians

WHERE the hell do you find physicians to shadow, ive called everywhere. or do you just find some guys you know and ask them?


how does my application sound for applying to places like University of medicine and dentistry in NJ. basically middle tear schools.

also how does taking premed courses at a community college affect my application. is it looked at negatively that all my classes where at a community college and if so, just how big of an impact does it make??

Hi! I'm just starting this process, too, but I wanted to say Hi and good luck to a fellow nurse! I'm not sure about alot of the questions you asked, but I asked a similar question about pre-reqs at a community college, and the basic answer was that it is frowned upon. However, I spoke with the dean at the school I want to apply to, and she said it was OK as long as I had the MCAT score to make up for it. It's not ideal, but my husband is going to school and this is the only way I can do it. If you can swing, I think you'd be better off doing them at a regular college, from what I've heard.

Im just going to make one comment. The 90 credit hours is not going to cut it. You WILL need a bachelors.

Did you take the MCAT ?. And when are you planning to apply ?. Also, are you NJ resident ?.

An easy way to find a physician to shadow is to ask your personal physician, thats how I found one of my shadowing gigs.

Hit on the docs you meet in the ER or while performing your nursing duties.

Agree with above advice.

For shadowing, look up docs at your hospital/around your area that primarily see patients in outpatient clinics. Family medicine/Internal medicine attendings/residents will hopefully be more open to giving you shadowing opportunities.
