Do nurses do medical research (anything, ranging from bench, to clinical, to epidemiological)?

Some nurses have PhDs, but they may be doctorates of nursing.

I have been planning to become a doctor, but I see now that nursing is a pretty attractive career too. However, I also want to do research.

They do tons of research in patient care. Many of the wound care journals I've had to read recently are filled with research nurses as first or second author.

there are tons of nurses in my biostats classes getting some kind of research masters or certificate or whatnot (don't know all of their life stories but I know they're in the class so that they can write research papers and do their own statistical analyses). In looking for clinical research positions I've also seen many positions that required RN degrees (much to my dismay of course)
