Hi all

For someone inspiring to be a MD, which of the following two degrees are more closely related or complement in becoming one? I'm currently in my first year of physiotherapy and I'm not sure if I should continue or switch to nursing. I would appreciate to hear advice from current medical students.

Thanks

Neither are really a complement (and certainly shouldn't be viewed that way). As far as choosing between them it just depends on what you have interest in/what you can see yourself doing. Personally I would have much more interest in PT because I like musculoskeletal stuff. I know alot of nurses who love their job but thats probably a different discussion and you should ask nurses about that...certainly not med students.

Who are you inspiring? Or you mean you have to keep breathing on the way to your MD?

If you like PT stick with PT. Nursing doesn't give you any advantage as far as attractiveness to med schools. Take prereqs as part of either, take MCAT, that's it.

None of them are really that useful in terms of learning skills you'll need as a physician, but they can get you some great clinical hours and experience with the world of healthcare. Imo just get a CNA or EMT-B or some patient tech certification (aka whatever you can get in a short time without having to pay too much) and get some clinical hours. Med schools aren't likely to value one over the other, nor are they likely to be impressed by your work. They just want to know that you have some understand of what healthcare is like and what physicians actually do. If you're already a physiotherapist and you enjoy it, just stick to that, going into nursing or getting an actual PT degree is a waste of your time and money if your end goal is to be a physician.
