Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone had their nutrition and food science classes be included in their BCPM gpa? These classes are mostly science based (food chemistry- basically orgo for foods, nutrition and metabolism- heavily biology!, etc). It would be a shame to see things that so heavily associated with biology and chemistry not be counted. Anyone have any similar experiences?

Unfortunately they are not counted as BCPM by AMCAS, but rather "Health Sciences". This sucked for me as I was a Nutrition Science major in college.

I actually had a microbiology of foods class (through my school's nutrition dept) that was counted toward bcpm by AMCAS. But, since the previous poster was a nutrition major and had several of these classes, I would go by what he/she said.

would a food chemistry class count? I would think so b/c if the previous poster said a microbiology foods class was counted then I think the same would apply.

You can probably get some bio courses (physiology, biochem, microbio, etc.) to count, even if they're not offered by the bio department. Something like "food chemistry" probably won't fly.

exactly. ive talked with some people at AMCAS because as a kines major my anatomy and physiology courses are offerd in the "kines" department and not the "biology" department. they said they would still count towards my BCPM.

the other classes will not, including courses like food chemistry, or any nutrition course, exercise physiology, etc.

but you can always check for yourself.

I took Food Chemistry and it was considered Chemistry by AMCAS. Microbiology was considered Biology and my Vitamin and Mineral Biochemistry was also considered Biology. However, all of my other nutrition classes were considered Health Sciences. Hope this helps!

My intro nutrition class went towards health sciences, but they let me keep my developmental nutrition as biology (they both had nutrition designators). List them where you think they belong, and the worst thing that will happen is they will just change it from bio to health sciences when they verify your transcript if they disagree.

I'm a nutrition major right now, and it really depends on the class content. Most nutrition classes go into health science, but classes like biochemistry of nutrition or food chemistry usually get counted into your BCPM grade.
