hey everyone, this is my 1st post...
So I am apllying 4 ophtho in a few months & have a few ?'s for u all. I am engaged & my fiance is going for peds. we ideally want to end up in manhattan together, but would be happy anywhere in nyc. I originally was going to apply to all programs in nyc, LI, westchester, NJ, & philly which totalled 20 in all. I thought I would place in a program based on my stats. In summary I attend SUNY Upstate (syracuse), was nominated for Jr AOA (top 5%), have honored all clinical clerkships thus far, and scored 245 on step 1. I am a cornell grad. I expect strong letters from our ophtho chair, from an eye path elective that i am finishing up w/ Dr Barbara Streeten who supposedly is well known, and from my surgery attending. I also have a supplimental letter from a Dr at einstein that i did undergrad research for during a summer. l have completed a 2 wk elective at NYU, and will have other electives at mt sinai, einstein, & cornell.
I recently met w/ the residency director at my school to discuss my residency list & he suggested that I also apply to places in upstate NY, Boston, DC, Balimore, & western PA - just to be safe since NY is a competitive area to place. In discussing this w/ my fiance she agreed to also apply to balt, DC, Boston but not to places like rochester, buffalo, & western PA that aren't metropolitan cities. The count now has grown to like 30-35 places. 2 negatives come to mind: more expenses & more of a pain getting to all these places 4 interviews.
So my questions are:
1) do i really need to venture to boston, DC, balt w/ apps - & if so, any info on programs here would be appreciated?
2) what r my chances if sticking w/ the original 20 in the nyc area?

sorry this came out so long, any advice is appreciated.

From your bio, you are an average to above average applicant. Apply to wide range of programs including Buffalo, Western PA, etc. the average applicant applies to 35 programs and many people particularly in the NY metro area have numbers very similar to yours. Good Luck

I think he is more than above average applicant with his stats, but I do agree that he should apply to about 30 programs. You can always refuse to interview. You need to apply to enough programs to receive at least 7 interviews. Seven or more interviews appear to be the "magic" number of interviews to give you the best possible chance of matching.

thanx 4 the advice.. I guess I'll apply to ~ 30 programs & just deal w/ the travel & $$ woes...

I'm not sure how you could be considered "average"-- I think definately well above average. Last year average board scores for those matched was 228, and you are well above that. And how can you get better than honors on all rotations? Maybe at some people's schools they can get super duper honors.
