Have a question regarding the competitiveness of matching into a neurology residency. I am a fourth year osteopathic student with average board scores. I am in the top 20th% percentile of my class and have honored most of my clerkships. The issue is that I am not willing to leave new york(nassau, suffolk, metro area). According to FREIDA, there are no osteopathic programs in NY, but many allopathic programs. Is it likely that I can obtain one of these residencies by only applying to only the 10 or so that fit this description?

Also, will these allopathic residencies accept an osteopathic traditional rotating year? I know the issue about only being able to be certified by the osteo neuro boards but not the allo ones, thats ok, but what i am asking is if these ny allo programs will definitely accept you into their residency after the traditional rotating year?

Thanks for everyones help 👍👍

All advanced ACGME residencies require an ACGME (i.e. allopathic) internship to fullfill their PGY-1 requirement.

They do not accept AOA-internships.

Thanks Terpskin99,

Is it true that they will not accept you into an allopathic neurology program with an osteopathic rotating internship? Or is it simply that you can not got licensed by the allopathic boards. In other words can you do a rotating osteopathic internship followed by an allopathic neuro residency and just get board certified by the osteopathic neurology boards?

Thanks 👍👍

Someone can correctly if I am wrong and Terpskins might have a better response than mine. I spoke to one of my lecturers who is a DO and did an allopathic residency (non-neurology) about this. He said that you get your medical license through your COMLEX exams, but you are board certified by the particular boards of your specialty.

So in the case of neurology if you go into an allopathic neurology residency, then you would be boarded through the ABPN. The DO equivalent will not let you sit for the osteopathic boards if you have not done an osteopathic/dually accredited neurology residency. Since an ACGME residency requires an approved ACGME internship, you won't be able to get away with the rotating osteopathic internship. I guess the options as a DO are to:

- Go into an osteopathic/dually accredited program (no problems)
- Go into an allopathic program and plan on not being able to practice in the 5 states
- Go into an allopathic program and try to get a resolution 42 approval
- Do a dually accredited internship that meets the requirements of ABPN

If anyone can think of anything else or modifications to the above let me know.

You cannot sit for the osteopathic neurology boards unless you are in an AOA neurology residency.

Neuro residency starts at PGY2 year. The ACGME requires that you complete an allopathic internship year prior.

You are only required to complete an osteopathic rotating internship to practice in 5 states (this requirement does not exist for the other 45 states). Yes, this may mean you will need to complete two years of internship.
