I'm in need of a quick bit of advice.

I'm a California resident, but I'm looking to get into medical school in NYC for various reasons. I'm going to have a year in between finishing school and applying to med schools (so 2 years in between finishing school and starting med school) during which time I can either get a job in California or in New York. Would it be helpful to get a job in NY and become a NY resident, or should I just keep my CA residency?

Thanks. 🙂

unless you plan on going to one of the NY state supported schools, there's no real need to change your residency status. it makes no difference to any of the schools. plus, leave yourself options with the UC system 🙂

Unless you are interested in one of the SUNY state med schools (Upstate, Downstate, Buffalo, and Stonybrook) your residency status doesn't make any difference. New York's private med schools (NYU, Sinai, Columbia......) don't take residency into account when choosing their students. You would probably be much better off staying in CA since you would have a much better shot at a UC med school, which is definitely better than a SUNY.

Thank you both for responding. 🙂 Good point (both of you) about keeping my options open with the UCs.

hey hey, let's not be too hard on the SUNY's. they're great schools, even if they don't get as much hype as UC's.

SUNY's will not accepting as many instate % as UC's aer nto nearly as comeptitve....they are still great schools...but due to the sheer # of applicants for the UC's they are very, very competitve...A friend of mine from CA is applying now and hoping for an interview with a Master's in Physio.

If you have any questions about NY schools or the SUNY's feel free
