I have a friend coming from Europe who wanted to know.
I've seen variations of this....

If one is a FMG and at a school not accredited by NY state (ie the big 4, SGU, Ross, etc) and one does more than 12 weeks clerkship in NY state before graduation than he/she is barred from applying to residency in NY state.

Any idea? Has anyone been actually affected by this?

*note: I can't find if the rule applies to >12 weeks clerkshio in NY state specifically OR >12 weeks " in a different country from which your medical school is"???

thanks for those replying

From Albany Medical College internal medicine residency website:

New York State mandates that you do not spend more than 12 weeks of elective time outside
of your medical school country while enrolled as a student (prior to receiving your medical
degree). If you have spent more than 12 weeks away from your medical school country, you
are ineligible for training in New York State.

IMG here.

So we're still eligible to apply for residency in NY, just as long as no more that 12 weeks of clerkships were done in NY...right?

I've read different interpretations of their >12 week clerkship statement....so confusing.

I would personally go with anything in writing rather than word of mouth. If it isn't in writing, they can change their minds.

Unaffiliated electives can not be more than 12 weeks.

Otherwise SGU, AUC, SABA and ROSS (which all do electives in the USA and/or UK, and not in the country of the medical school) would not qualify for licensing.

Does anybody know about any similar rule for Pennsylvania?

I have heard that if anyone (not even sure if it's particularly for FMGs or AMGs) does an away elective in the state of Pennsylvania, then that person becomes ineligible to apply for residency in Penn and also cannot practice in Penn.

Does anybody know anything about this?

The rule used to be (not sure if its changed) that rotations done in the state of Pennsylvania by FMGs could not be used toward the total number of medical school hours required for licensure in that state. You are not ineligible to apply for residency unless you do not otherwise have enough hours.

Thank you so much 🙂

An IMG here too.
I did 16 weeks of clinical rotations, but only 4 weeks in NY.
And all the electives were NOT for credit, so my home medical school does not put it on my transcript.
I have to do all my rotations at home school to graduate. I did rotations here to gain LORs and US clinical experience.
Do I still face this rule?
