The "NYC AREA Internships: Thoughts from Current/Previous Interns?" has received so many great responses that I was wondering if we might get a similar discussion going about NYC externships?

NYC externships have just become insane. When I was applying, we had to submit 3 LORs, transcripts, testing reports (neuropsych or rorschach), CV and cover letter. The hours can be longer in NYC..some sites want you there 3 days a week plus (Jacobi and some parts of Bellevue). Apparently, this insanity is not present in many parts of the country. Better to apply in NJ or in the outer boroughs if you want less competition.

I know externs tend to be happy at these sites:
NYU Child study center: great for CBT and if you want to work with psychologists who are leaders in the field. Long hours.
Brooklyn VA: externs were happy here. 2 days per week, mostly psychodynamic.
Jacobi: externs are happy here. 3 days per week minimum. Great if you want to get inpatient experience before internship.
NIP: good psychodynamic training. externs were happy here. The hours are reasonable.
Bellevue: They seem to have every rotation that you can imagine. The hours tend to be long. Externs seem very pleased with the survivors of torture program. I think they have re-vamped the externship though.

Thanks for the response! These comments are very helpful.

Some other programs that I would like to hear more about (from a trainee's perspective):

1.) St. Luke's-Roosevel Hospital
2.) Weill Cornell
3.) Columbia/NYSPI: http://nyspi.org/kolb/clinical_psychology_department.htm
4.) Gracie Square Hospital: http://www.nygsh.org/psychologyexternship/
5.) Mount Sinai
6.) St. Mary's Hospital for Children:

Does anyone know anything about any of these or other NYC programs?

Hi All (NYC/NJ/CT doctoral students),

anyone heard back from externship sites yet?

I'll start--

I've heard back from St. Barnabas
Monte Primary Care
the center for CBT

thanks!

So far the only responses that I've gotten back are from places confirming that they recieved my application (and from one place letting me know that they aren't taking students anymore). Be interested to hear more about other people's experiences. As a school psych student, this is my first time trying to get a clinical externship, all of my others have been in schools or similar facilities, and those are still really easy to get in NYC as long as you don't wait until the last minute to look.

anyone heard back yet from bellevue?

I've heard from Bronx Children's Psychiatric Center.
Some of my classmates have heard back from LIJ Child and Adolescent outpatient, LIJ Adolescent Pavilion, LIJ Trauma, and St. Lukes trauma

I loved the psychology department at QHC when I externed there. I think most of the people I remember are still there. Very collegial and down-to-earth. Nothing cutting-edge (though the self-psychology seminars/case discussions with Henry Seiden were a real treat), but I had a solid training year there.

I did not train at Interfaith but had a negative impression when I interviewed there for externship. It was during the transit strike and I asked to reschedule my interview because I did not have a car at the time and had no means of transportation. The director of psychology gave me grief about how if I was really interested in there program, I would make it my business to get to the interview (ultimately, she relented). When I related this experience to people who had trained there, none was surprised.

I've heard positive things about Maimonides, can't recall specifics.

Kings County is a mixed bag.

I have heard from/know others who have heard from:

Creedmoor
Bronx Psychiatric
Jamaica Hospital Center
Kings County

Would love to know if anyone has heard from Bellevue or Manhattan Psych

Hi All,

I have heard from:

Westchester Jewish Community Services (interview scheduled)
Jewish Child Care Association (interview scheduled)
Child/Adolescent Treatment Center (interviews are finished and I missed those)
Morgan Stanley School Based Program (received email stating that they received my application)

Has anyone heard from:

Montefiore- Child Adolescent Treatment Track (COPD and ASDP)
Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center
Child Mind Institute

I am also new to this externship process and I mailed my applications on 1/31. My program is not part of the NYC externship consortium. Does anyone know what my chances are like at the sites mentioned above?

I have heard from bellevue med (palliative track)

Among myself and my classmates, of the sites you mentioned, we have been extended interviews to:
Columbia School Based Mental Health (Morgan Stanley)
Child Mind Institute
Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center

Most of my classmates (and I) got our applications in on Jan 17. But I know a lot of places didn't really start looking at apps until Feb. Chances of getting an interview are better if you are a 3rd year applying for 4th year at the competitive Manhattan sites, but if you have a lot of clinical experience, you can be competitive as a 2nd year too.

Thanks Lovelyrita. I am a 4th year student, but I haven't really heard back from many sites. I am also coming from a program outside the NYC area.

I have heard from the Montefiore COPD and ASDP (interviewed on Wednesday)

Thank you for your reply SOUPSOUP. Just out of curiosity, who did you send your app to? Joanna Ball or Jana Horowitz? It appears that there is a discrepancy between the FDU and NYSPA sites on this and I sent my app to Horowitz.

Hey, yea it was all through Dr Horowitz. It is frustrating how much the externship info changes from year to year and never seems to get taken down.

I'm still waiting to hear from:
Bellevue PSOT
St. Lukes/Roosevelt CARES
QCPC

Anyone heard from these sites yet? Thanks!

I ams till waiting to hear back from Bx Lebanon
Woodhull and

Thanks!

Has anyone heard from the Bellevue forensic track? As it gets later into February, I'm beginning to think I should give up hope from the places I haven't heard from yet...

That's a good question. I didn't apply to that track, but I know that their cover letter stated that the applications were due 2/16. I haven't heard from them either, and this is my first time applying to externships (and I am very confused about sites beginning to interview before their deadlines for applications), but I am assuming they will start contacting applicants after the 16.

The real meaning of deadlines for externships are kinda fuzzy and not clear from site to site--they may say for instance, applications due by 2/15, but in the past, before the set acceptance notify date (this year 3/5, this being the 2nd year there has been a set date) all externs could very well have been interviewed and spots offered before the application deadline! in the past the first day you could submit externship apps, 1/15 or in this year 1/17 was often one of the last days, with sites starting to read apps the day they get them, knowing they were going to offer say 20 interviews for 5 spots, and would stop looking at applications after they had read 20 worth interviewing. this for sites that had February application "deadlines". they could easily not look at any apps that came in after 1/18 or 1/20 if they got enough quality ones in the first few days. not all sites are like this but many are. all in all it is a mess and i, personally, would be interested in any thoughts or ideas for how we can advocate and make the externship situation in NYC run better!

Wow, this is really interesting. Thanks for the insight, I wish I had known this beforehand. I haven't heard from about 6 of the 11 sites I applied to.

anyone heard from woodhull or bronx leb? thank you!!

Has anyone heard from NYU Child Study Center, ADHD/DBD track?
NYU Child Study Center is interviewing this weekend in Hackensack. An interview has not been extended to me yet, but it is my understanding that they will be notifying applicants about interviews in the coming days. I apologize for my previous blank posts.
