Hello,

Curious if anybody could give me an estimate for the starting salary of an ophthalmologist in NYC, and maybe also 2-3 years out of residency. Trying to figure out if it's feasible with my loan burden. Thank you very much!

Are you willing to consider any other location?

Basically NYC including all of the boroughs. Boston is also a possibility. Any thoughts?

don't know about east coast, but I know the competitive markets in california are about $140k +/- 20k. NYC/Boston is not hurting for ophthalmologists.

lifestyle can't be beat. ophthalmology is interesting and job satisfaction is high.

How quickly does that number rise in desirable cites, and what would you say is a rough average for a general ophthalmologist working a "regular" schedule in these cities?

My experience is that you are looking at guarantees as low as $120K to maybe $150K on average. Will be most likely under $200K in income for that first year. Probably still under after 2-3 years. Depends on the practice.

Someone in NYC who is performing 5 cataracts per week has a pretty good practice. Just going to get worse over the years with the number of folks who only want to live in NYC. That small slice of the patient population you have today will only get smaller.

5 cataracts a week is considered "good"?!? That is pretty sad! Not sure how you can break even with only 5 a week unless they are all choosing premium IOLs. Probably better just to stay in clinic.
