Hello All,

To those of you in the area, what is the pharmacist job market currently like for NYC?

Best,
William

Specifically, the city itself, not the outlying areas.
I can only speak for CVS, but they are in a hiring freeze. I spent the day interviewing 5th year interns who currently work for CVS to see who will be cut in the next few months since the company does not anticipate having enough openings in spring/summer 2011 for all the current 5th year interns.

In NYC...

CVS is not hiring. If they do have any open positions, they are filling it by hiring their interns.

Rite Aid is full also...

Walgreen is semi-full.... but I have heard of people being hired.

Duane Reade is still hiring due to high turnover rate.

Hospitals are hiring again but they are pretty much full.

The problem is if a company is hiring, they are hiring because it has a high turn over rate which means you probably wont last since 10 other pharmacists including new graduates, experienced, and fast pharmacists didnt. PS, overnight spots are still avaiable...

They made us fill out intern forms the other day at CVS. The pharmacist(SP) said based on what she evaluates us it would determine if we get jobs or not when we graduate. (I'm kind of doubting this because what I am hearing of CVS not hiring anymore and that not everyone in this years graduating class got an offer.) 🙁

my friend recently got an offer from Target down in Queens starting at around 115K which I thought was quite low according to NY standards.

That is low, but quality of life at Target probably accounts for a lot. This was a full time offer?

Might be low but CVS is offering 30 hours in their contract which equates to ... less than 100k.

Very interesting, I wasn't aware CVS are actually cutting back on interns considering all of the 6th-year interns in my surrounding districts were offered contracts. Unfortunately, even with the contracts, it'll be floating for a long time.
