NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There are not over 300 students per class. Class of 2012 has about 275.

So the Admissions Director didn't address this yesterday..and I forgot to ask. How long between interview and decision? One month?

Thanks!

Yeah they told us around a month.. but the tour guides said they all heard in ~2 weeks... so I'm hoping for the latter!! :xf: haha

Hey guys, if anyone is changing or canceling their interview, would it be possible to PM me so that I may switch interview slots with you please.
thanks

Just want to let you guys know what I submitted the secondary they sent out a few weeks ago via the mass email. I was a bit hesitant in handing over $60 thinking it was a sham to collect money from us due to the switcheroo in mid-cycle, but low and behold I received an invite last week for an interview scheduled for Feb 25th.

Submit the secondary if you haven't because I think they stop interviewing in March! Good luck and take care! :xf:

P.S. For those who are planning to cancel their interview with NYCOM, please let me know so I can have your date. Thanks! 🙂

so i can remember at least 5 different people asking for a pm if someone is canceling their interview....just saying in the event that i do cancel my interview (there is a chance, it's on jan.12th) i am not going to pick someone to pm i'm just going to post it here and let you know it's up for grabs....to me it seems that's the only fair way

I have an interview Jan. 12 also!! I am so excited I just got the offer today.

Interview Invite today! Scheduled for Feb 24th.. ahh so long from now!

congrats! that is awesome that you got jan. 12th (it was the earliest i could get and i got invited beginning/mid october) depending on how my other interviews go/if i have to put down deposits i might not be able to go on my interview, but i definitely want to visit the school and will most likely be seeing you there!

oh thankyou, for verifying.

i'm in the class of 2013. and there were 311 students (in fundamentals). of that theres 30-40 dpc students. it still feels like a small class to me though.

I am an Out Of State Applicant from Michigan. Roughly how many OOS applicants does NYCOM accept every year?

Do I have any shot if I send in my secondary before December with these stats:

3.47 overall GPA
3.3 Science GPA
27O MCAT (9 in each section)
Employment at an Osteopathic Hospital
Roughly 1000 volunteer hours

they take very few OOS students. There is someone with higher gpa stats n etc in this forum and had it send around Sept and they haven't receive any news yet.

I don't know if there is an answer yet. I got the email and submitted the secondary before I heard anything about an interview. I received an interview invite today and the woman I talked to on the phone told me I should complete the secondary as soon as possible. In other words, it didn't seem like there was any weight placed on the secondary before the interview, even after the system had changed.

Thanks for the replies- I got the invite today and still havent done the secondary yet so that answers part of my question 🙂

A girl in my interview group Tuesday was from Jersey. Granted this is at least in the region.

i was invited around mid-october, and a bunch of other oosers were invited then as well, however almost all of us were from nj....it seems they ARE looking outside of ny, but may be concentrating on surrounding states first....hope this helps!

I was oos (from New England) when I applied and I interviewed in February.

For people who interviewed, where did you stay??
hey i stayed at the East norwich inn. I would recommend it. Besides it being one of the lower rates, the rooms were clean and pretty close to the campus (10 min. drive) down the street.

I stayed at the East Norwich Inn, which was the cheapest option for me, but I thought it was really creepy and completely don't recommend it! I mean, I didn't die, and it was close to the school, but I definitely didn't like it while I was there.

for those who interviewed in early november, think we'll have a decision soon? december 15th is right around the corner.. =x

Yeah I think so. I'm thinkin by the 1st week in December, the latest.

second to third week of december is more realistic.

anyone know the amount and timeline for the deposit to reserve seats? (from previous years or even this year)

They use the general AACOMAS guidelines, which can be found in the College Information booklet (that has the info about all the schools). Accepted before Nov 15th and you have until Dec 15th for the deposit. After Nov 15 you have 30 days. And then later in the cycle you have 2 weeks (I don't have the booklet in front of me so I can't say exact dates). NYCOM's deposit is $1500.

DOES this school screen before sending out secondaries? Sorry if this question has already been answered.

hi everyone,

i just sent an e-mail to the admissions office withdrawing from my interview on jan. 12th (afternoon session).....i don't know if they have acknowledged the withdrawal yet, but that date is (or soon will be) up for grabs....i hope one of you who really wants to attend nycom gets to move your interview date up.....best of luck to everyone!

When I applied they did screen before sending out secondaries. In fact, at that time, they did not send out secondaries unless they want you for an interview. But then they switched mid-cycle, so now they send out secondaries to EVERY applicant. Although (corrent me if I'm wrong) I heard that you don't really have to send back your secondary for them to consider you for an interview.

Did anyone hear back on acceptance yet?

🙁 no not yet. this is driving me nuts!

I really liked this school, but is it going to be a necxessity to own a car to go here? I got that impression when I was there.

@ fitz i dont think i saw any bus stops near by or anything. not too sure. does kinda suck commuting around long island without a car. think everyone has a car.

Anybody know exactly when the first round of interviewees will receive their decision?

Based on last year, they received their acceptances the week after thanksgiving, and it was through snail mail.

I hope we hear back during the middle of this week. I have a deposit due somewhere next week...but NYCOM is my top choice.

Hey guys, so I just rescheduled my Feb 9th interview for tomorrow, so if anyone wants to grab that date (if it's still available) call them!!! Good Luck!

Just out of curiosity, how were you able to change the date? Did you just call randomly to see if there were any earlier available times?

Yeah I checked last year's thread as well, seems like they send out batch acceptances, so the people in the first 2 weeks of interviews should be getting their decisions either this week or next (at least I hope that's the case)...

IIRC, they had mentioned that the committee would meet "before the holiday."

I am not quite sure if that translates into a decision by this week, but believe me, I am HOPING and PRAYING this is true.

Have they consistently sent decisions out around this time over the years? Or is it highly variable?

I know the secondary is to be filled out online but I need to bring in the secondary to my interview tomorrow. I was supposed to interview on feb. 23rd but luckily a spot opened up for tomorrow! So my e-mail interview invite never had the pdf version of the supplemental attached, only the online link. Can anyone who received a secondary with a pdf version of it post it up or e-mail me? thanks!

to those who are going to interview this week or next, can you do us a favor and ask if the admission's decision will be snail mailed or emailed?

in the previous years it was through snail mail, but in those years, the interview invites were also through snail mail.

thanks and good luck

when i interviewed on the 18th, they said decisions would come via snail mail

Hi!! Wow, my heart is pounding reading all the posts. Congratulations to those who got interviews and good luck to any that are still waiting!! When should the application be submitted? I'm taking the MCAT in May, so would June be good? I hope to be in the same boat as any of you. I'm a Niagara Falls resident.. I attend the University at Buffalo. They do this VE Collect system for Recommendation Letters. Would: 2 Science teachers/ Volunteer/DO/Research letters be best?

Also I'm really scared about the application process. I don't really know anybody that went to college in my family (all high school grads) so I hope and pray I'll get a chance. So far my science gpa 3.5/3.6 overall. Is there an advantage to applying to DO schools only? The ones applying to allopathic are intimidating me quite a bit! I'm worried about my volunteer hours though.. I recently became interested and only have 100+from hospital and 100+ from a nursing home. First two years of college I've done Human Services (social work) because that was my initial interest until I learned about DO.

Answers are appreciated! Thank you!

P.S. Is NYCOM affordable? Financially I'm scared about that too, I hope they cover the tuition/board.

Anybody canceling an upcoming interview? Mines not til feb 18, but I am trying to see if maybe I can get in earlier. I really like NYCOM and would love it if I could interview sooner!

Yes I did call randomly today and the woman offered me tomorrow, so I decided to grab it, but from what I understand people are canceling last minute since the person whose interview date I got canceled today.

Hey Niagara Falls! I'm from North Tonawanda and go to UB's Grad School😀 Try and get a pre-health committee letter from UB- committee letters always have the most weight and can eliminate the need for having 2 science + 1 non science professor as a substitution. You'll have to fill out some forms I believe and interview with them so they can get to know you as a person. Volunteer/physician/ Research letters are always great, ask early to give enough notice.

Your science GPA is looking pretty good, keep up the good work and as always, strive to keep bumping it up. Your volunteer hours look good, I have about 200 that went on my application, and I've gotten acceptances. It is just one part of many important pieces they look at overall. Try and study hard for the MCAT, theres always a bunch of Kaplan classes at UB north if that's something you're interested in.

Don't be scared about the application/interview process (or allo schools!). If you ever want more info feel free to PM me! I'd love to share what I've been through and learned to help a fellow UB student with this lovely process 🙂

!!! Yeah I have a lot of questions for you!!!!! Have you used the prehealth committee VE collect system? I went to the meeting to get my account activated but I don't know how to use it yet! The Kaplan/Princeton Review classes are a little pricey I'll say 🙁 Would my best alternative be: Purchase all AAMC MCAT practice tests, I bought the book... Would buying the EK books be ok? Or should I stick to the practice exams? How did you study for it? What schools did you apply to?

Thanks for any help!

Gotcha, thanks for the info.
