NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks but I feel that the 6 on verbal along with a 24 mcat is not so hot. As well as the avg gpa. Hopefully I can stay in ny with the rest of my family. Anyone else has similar experience let me know thanks

What do you like most about this school? NYCOM has a pretty big incoming class, do you feel like the classes are too large? I'm more familiar with PCOM and they upload lectures (audio and video), does NYCOM do the same?

For me it was Location, family, and friends are here. I am from NYC didn't want to go out state. The school it self has excellent rotation sites. Nycom does upload Lectures and does have video but it the video is contingent on class attendance. If 66% class shows up the lecture will be streamed if not students will not have access to it. In terms of class size, it is big but I was used to that from college most of my science classes had close to 300 people in them. Possibly at graduation you will be introducing yourself to the person next to you. In general it is pretty low stress environment not very cut throat because it is a Honors/Pass/Fail. Honors is cut throat but most of us work together to make sure you get through. Faculty are available via e-mail and will try to help you succeed. However the exams at NYCOM are not very representative of the National Board Exams. They have recently tried to make there questions more board style but you will have to do significant preparation by yourself for them.

NYCOMEC hospitals are awesome teaching hospitals with many having ties to MD schools as well, which gives us a great learning experience. For example Maimonides is an affiliate of Down State, North Shore-LIJ is an affiliate of Einstein as well as NYU and will be part the new Hofstra medical school. St. Barnebas in the Bronx is also affiliated with Einstein and is a level I trauma center and it gives students a great opportunity to learn. It has NUMC (Nassau Unversity Medical Center) which will also be part of the new Hofstra Medical school.

Hopes this helps good luck!!!!

About how long did you guys have to wait to hear about interview invites after you were released by AACOMAS?

AACOMAS released my primary on 9/17, and NYCOM acknowledged having received it this past Monday (Sep. 21). I just got my interview invitation this afternoon. The wait time is going to vary with each person I guess, so just hang in there scummie. I am OOS (NJ), and also do not have a DO letter...I plan on getting in touch with several DOs to see if I can work out an arrangement.

For those of you who already got the supp., how long should question 8 be? They only give 3 lines to work with....is it alright to attach an additional page with a somewhat longer response? Also, I already listed my hobbies on the primary :/

PS: Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back from NYCOM

Well my aacomas was released to NYCOM on aug. 23 and I was invited to interview on Sept. 15. but, from reading the posts it seems as if the first batch of invites didn't go out until Sept. 11 so they should be sending invites out pretty frequently now until they book all their interview slots or whatnot

I agree 100%, NYCOM has such an amazing set of rotation sites if you're looking to stay in the NY/NJ area

Does NYCOM give out secondaries? They emailed me a month ago and said they recieved my application and will begin interviewing in November.

When they invite you for an interview via email, they send the secondary along with it as an attachment. Supposedly, they expect us to hand it in on the day of the scheduled interview. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

By the way...my interview is Jan. 6

NJ has a good osteopathic program especially favors instate

Awesome! Norman Gevitz, Phd (author of The DOs - a book every pre-med interested in osteopathic medicine should read) is now a part of the NYCOM faculty.

That's so cool, what department/position will he be in?

According to the NYCOM newsletter I received he's director of the NYIT Center for Culture and Humanism (Professionalism) and a professor of the dept of Family Medicine. I'm MS3 and not on campus much so I'm not exactly sure if he is teaching lectures, but it's still kind of cool he's attached to NYCOM in some way 🙂 👍

is it really pass/fail? I couldn't find anything on the website. Is it pass/fail for the first two years only? or for all 4 years?

It's honors/pass/fail for all four years. Honors is the top 10% and passing is usually 70% but it depends on the sd.

hmm, what do you think about it? is it a good thing that the systems set up this way?

interviewing at nycom jan 7th!
whoot whoot 😉
stats: 24R mcat
sGPA: 3.45
nsciGPA:3.7
totalGPA 3.61

miracles can happen!

I got an invitation today!!!!!!
Scheduled for Jan 12th.
In-state.
Complete on August 28th.

Are OOS interviews being extended already? How are you notified, email, snail, etc??

Can someone tell me the cost for the secondary app.?

Hi everybody,
How long are your answers to NYCOM's secondary questions? Do you attach extra sheets? I feel like they provide too little space.
For instance, they ask "discuss your reasons for applying to NYCOM", but provide only 3 lines for an answer.

Yeah, I asked that before as well...I'd really be thankful for some input.

I agree...I'm still waiting for an interview though. I think NYCOM has a very good program as well, and actually suits me more since I have family that live near-by. As of right now I'm undecided between the two, but I'm getting way ahead of myself in that regard.

Thanks for your help =) I feel a little better now!

i know this might be a dumb question that i probably know the answer to. Who here is set on attending NYCOM and has an interview? for those in this position, are you guys going to shrug off the rest of your interviews? I mean this school DOES have 95% acceptance rate for interviewed individuals... I have an interview elsewhere and i really cant see myself in that kind of setting... im SO tempted to not attend. what do you guys think? bad idea or no?

I think bad idea... 95% or not you could be in the 5% or the stats could even be wrong who knows what the acceptance rate post interview really is. Secondly, what if you go there and you don't like it? Even if you live in the area doesn't necessarily mean you will like the school/facilities.

Yea, until you get an acceptance letter, don't forfeit other interviews.

my app was sent out on sept. 24th and i just received an interview invite today (oct. 6th)....i am super-excited, however i just called to schedule my interview and it isn't until jan. 12th 🙁.....this seems pretty late.....does nycom schedule oos'ers later than in-state, and if so, are my chances significantly less bc i'm not interviewing until jan.....any feedback would be much appreciated!

thanks,

NYCOM unlike alot of the rest, only interview you if they want you... which i think is such a better system than what other schools have employed. if you've been invited, you have a high chance of getting in

I have an interview on January 13! Anyone else with me on this day? I'm a New Jersey resident. 😀

they must really like us jersey kids this week 😉
miss you by a day....best of luck to everyone!

primary was completed on 8/13 still haven't heard back from this school yet!
im oos, 3.3cGPA, 3.3sGPA, 30R MCAT what gives?

I took the 19th 🙂 OOS-NJ... can't wait!

I got a complete email aug. 27th and an Interview Invite today..

Good luck everyone!

Just got an interview invite! 3.52 cGPA, 3.61 sGPA, 32 MCAT. NJ resident.

I was already accepted to UMDNJ, so it would be hard to pass up the in-state tuition plus i really liked the school. I'm still deciding whether to accept the interview invite though. I'm married, and maybe I can pull something off where I wouldn't have to move for the sake of my wife. The commute to Long Island would still be a drag, but I'll see what she wants to do.

From what I hear, NYCOM is a good school with a solid reputation.

it seems that they first invite instaters then move on to new jersey, our beloved neighbors =)

i think if you were to commute from nj to nycom everyday, you'll probably want to kill yourself. that is a rough 3 hour commute everyday.

Woohoo I got an interview invite today! I'm going Jan. 19th in the morning, anyone else?

Released 9/24/09
Interview invite 10/6/09
SciGPA - 3.31
NonSciGPA - 3.80
Cumulative - 3.51
mcat - 29 first time, 26 second time
instate

I'm also from NJ.. looks like NJ is gonna b in da house

Haha. I agree. I pretty much negated the idea about five minutes after I finished my original post.

Unless someone can give me a great reason to choose NYCOM over UMDNJ, I'm going to decline the offer. I can't think of any.

it's all about personal preference. you are from nj, so umdnj is the more logical choice for you. i'm from ny, so nycom is more logical for me. both are really good schools.

i actually want an interview invite from umdnj, ive been complete since mid july and never heard back. 🙁
