NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha. I agree. I pretty much negated the idea about five minutes after I finished my original post.

Unless someone can give me a great reason to choose NYCOM over UMDNJ, I'm going to decline the offer. I can't think of any.

I go to NYCOM and I say unless you have a reason to want to stay in NY, go to UMDNJ only because it's much much cheaper to attend. I am very happy with NYCOM as far as education and rotations go (I'm MS3 right now), but knocking a few thousand off your debt is very important given that we don't know how the healthcare field will change in the coming years. NYCOM's tuition is pretty much in-line with other private medical schools in the new york area, but UMDNJ gives EVERYONE in-state tution.

any idea if the interview is open file or closed file?

Can anyone tell me chances of acceptance to NYCOM? I am NY resident

hey everyone, my primary was released to NYCOM 9/3/09. I never received any sort of initial notification or anything and have yet to hear anything about a secondary. Is this normal? Seems like an awfully long wait to me. I hope they didnt decide to put me on the backburner early on.

If your out of state then this is nothing new. But you should have received an email saying that they received your file. You should be able to send in your LOR too. Call and check that they got your primary though.

i hate to start throwing out self-serving theories but i was looking through the interview feedback section and it seemed like the interviews conducted are usually very short. 10-15 minutes ? so im wondering how much an interviewer can really learn about a person in such a short amount of time? and apparently the interviewers actually have no acceptance decision making power. taking the interviewed/acceptance statistics into consideration, could it be that maybe the interviews are just a formality for an acceptance?

I'm REALLY hoping for an interview here! I've heard great things about the school and i LOVE New York and have family all over the area, including Long Island. When I got my confirmation letter (more than a month ago) saying they received my AACOMAS app, it said nothing about sending LORs... Would they even look at them if I send them before I get a secondary/invite? Could it help? I'm going to try to call in the next few days, but just wondering if anyone had any insight.

Thanks!😀

Yeah it seems as though the school pretty much decides if they want you or not before sending an interview invite, due to the interviewed/acceptance stats that you mentioned. The short interviews also seem to indicate that the interview process is mainly to screen any wackos OUT. lol All I can say is that it helps me breathe a little easier knowing I have the stats on our side, rather than vice versa!! haha

I think you should hold off on the LORs before you receive a formal invite. They asked for it in the interview invite email but I've heard nothing about sending it before then. hope it helps!

When I called to check my status the other day one of the people on the phone advised me to send my LOR over now before I receive my secondary. I don't think sending them over now is going to hurt you in any way, unless one of your LOR are bad.

Yeah I would definitely send you letters in now rather than later. My adviser sent mine back in mid-July and I got an interview... so no harm done! lol

Your also from NY, which helped a lot in getting an interview so early on. But it does help to send in the LOR early.

Thanks!! I'm getting on that tonight.... It's kind of weird that they don't make it clear that you can do that once they've received your primary app!

"Every applicant to NYCOM is invited to complete our online supplemental application and submit the NON-REFUNDABLE supplemental fee of $60.00 electronically."

Got that from http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Admissions_DO_Program.htm, which has a link to the secondary. I thought they emailed them out to candidates they wanted to interview so I never went looking for one on their website. Oh well!

Yeah thats weird I guess they'll take the $ they can get so if you don't know that they only email secondaries to people they want to interview its your loss.

That freaked me out for a minute!

I just called the admissions office and they said that statement is old and it hasn't been changed. They only request secondaries from applicants invited for interviews. I'm not sure what they would do if you send it in before being invited for an interview, but it's probably a waste of $60. However, it is fine to send in LORs before getting an interview invite.

Ah, ok. Thanks for calling to check up on that!

quick question....is it true that nycom accepts over 90% of those who interview or is this number grossly overestimated?

thanks so much,
x

definitely.....it would be truly magical if this is in fact true hah

I got an invitation 3 weeks ago.
They mentioned in email that "show interview letter to get discount rate for hotel & transportation". Which letter would you present? I haven't got anything in the mail. Should I call them?

There should be two attachments to your email, no?

wait...where did you hear NYCOM accepts over 90% of those they interview?

This CANNOT possibly be true.

read back through this thread, people discuss where they found the stats.

alot of the older year threads also say this if you look hard enough.

Dont get me wrong, I TOO wish the stats were in fact the case. It's just hard to believe that they accept so many who interviewed. That means that the class size would be huge.

Looking through the post interview discussion, some students said that the interview was 15min while others said it was 30min. Which one is it?

could be both 15 and 30. i mean the class IS PRETTY HUGE. there's 300 students per class year so and i believe they hand out around 600 acceptance.. i guess half of the accepted students dont matriculate.

Anyone know when the first day of interviews are?

I think 11/5 or 11/4, if you read back in this thread it's posted somewhere

I have 11/5... I think when I went to schedule there was maybe only one date before that, I posted back on this thread of the exact dates. I'm just too lazy to look back😀

Hey everyone, I was wondering why on NYCOM's website in the departments tab why there is a special tab for emergency medicine? Does NYCOM have a special program for students who want to be ER doctors or affiliations with hospitals for ER programs?

no clue, all i know is that the website is EXTREMELY outdated so.. yeah

just an FYI.

i'm going to be in nyc on 11/9, so i called nycom to tell them i'd be in the area. the woman's response was "well, even if the committe is considering your application, we're currently scheduling interviews for february."

damn!

Yeah I noticed that, turns me off from the school a little, some pages said information coming soon lol

Question!

I've had my interview scheduled for about a month now, and I approached my professor about letting me take my exam (that was scheduled the night before) early so I could I could get down to NYC, and she is refusing to let me reschedule. Do you think NYCOM would allow me to reschedule (without having to go out to January?) I'm IS so I have no idea if that would make any difference.

That's because we have a dept for EM. The EM docs in the dept have helped set up our robotic simulations (where the second years work in groups running various codes and such). The dept also does other stuff in the ICC (institute for clinical competence) including teaching intubations, placing IVs, suturing and so on. The head of the dept is fantastic and a great resource for clinical medicine. He is trying to set up some international mission works and is also working in various health care policy projects since he did get his MPH at Harvard after doing a dual EM/FM residency.

As for what programs NYCOM has to offer, check out NYCOMEC http://iris.nyit.edu/~nycomec/ This is a list of all the post grad opportunities nycom has.

Thanks so much😀, very interesting and good to know about the school. That link is exactly what I was looking for on the NYCOM webpage in the first place. I really like EM now maybe it will change after 4 years but it's nice to know that NYCOM has a lot of resources for students.

Thanks! I did and the woman was VERY helpful! I was able to move it to the next day of interviews because someone canceled! Otherwise I would have had to move it out to February!

Hi everyone,

I am new to the site and have an interview at NYCOM in Nov. I have a question about the secondary.. Does anyone know where to write in additional LORs on the application? I have a committee letter and other LORs that are from MD, employer etc. and I don't see a way to write them in unless I attach a separate page or something?
Also, I read in older posts that VirtualEvals isn't accepted but on NYCOM's website it says they are now okay.. correct?

Thanks

Does anyone know the first time COMLEX pass rate for NYCOM? I found a old post from 2006 saying it was 84%. Also a lot of the old posts bash NYCOM big time anyone have any comments about this?

I also have a secondary question.

So NYCOM has my primary and my understanding is that the NYCOM website is incorrect and I should not complete the secondary there. Instead I should wait for them to contact with me with the new version of the secondary? Can anyone confirm this? And if so, how long does it take to receive the secondary, assuming they want to send it to me.

Thanks and good luck to everyone.

NYCOM only sends you the secondary if they decide to send you an interview invite. The secondary was attached to the invite and should only be filled out if they send you the interview invite.

For any people who are not from the area, what airport are you using? I'm from Buffalo but due to time constraints driving won't work well. Any hotel suggestions as well?🙂
