NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have two questions about the supplemental:

1. Should we only use the space they provided for the space where it asks you to list reasons for applying to NYCOM?

Three lines is like a sentence or two to do so...was wondering if the rest of you are attaching an additional page...

2. Is it required to list an osteopathic physician under the LOR section?

2. I did not have an osteopathic physician for my LOR and I got in. It's not required.

I'm not exactly sure what she is talking about. I was invited for an interview back in September (it's on 11/17) and was given the secondary in that email. My understanding is they send you an interview invite after reviewing your primary and you bring in your secondary completed to the interview. You shouldn't have to fill anything out without having been invited for an interview.

she sounded like she didnt want to be on the phone with me. How long does it take for them to get back to you after they receive your primary.

I don't understand this at all. You don't get a secondary unless you get an interview invite since the secondary is an attachment with the invite.

I am not sure about other people, but my ACOMAS was released 9/3 to schools, I got the invite on 9/11. In state. I've heard other people on here be released much earlier and still haven't heard or they had it take much longer than I did to hear back- it's somewhat of a random process. Good luck.

Thanks for answering these questions...I've been waiting for one of you guys to chime in on these issues 🙂 Much appreciated.

It really depends...my primary was complete 6/24 and I heard back in the middle of September. They contact in staters first and should be in the process of inviting out of staters, however, they are scheduling interviews right now for February.

to current nycom students: where do most students live?

Most students live in the Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Locust Valley area. Thats about 7-15 min away from school driving. Others live in Hicksville, Westburry, or with their parents in long island somewhere. Could take anywhere from 20-40 min depending on where on long island. Lesser people choose to live in Queens (Bayside, Floral Park, Flushing, Forest Hills, Rego Park). It takes about 25-40 min driving to school. About 10-15 kids or less live in Brooklyn and commute to school. Takes a bit longer to get to school from Brooklyn and it really depends on how close you are to the highways. Don't think I know anyone that lives in Manhattan and drives to school every day, though some do have bfs/gfs there and spend the weekends in the city and come back to the island for weekdays.

thanks a lot. do you know how to go about finding a roommate? is there a centralized website the school sets up where future 2014ers can discuss rooming or is it more informal like via facebook. i know i'm getting a little ahead of myself but hey if i get in i wanna have all the info i can.

I'm so sad that I haven't been invited for an interview here yet. Starting to lose hope for this school.... 🙁

If you have your heart set on NYCOM, maybe send a letter of interest expressing why? Some schools appreciate it and will pull out your file.

Thanks for the advice, I might give that a try!

okay second time i called and the admissions lady said fill out the application online....is the school trying to take my money when there not even considering me??? my primary app has been verified for over a week and still i havent received conformation that it was received. whats going on??? is she telling the truth and i have to fill out the secondary application online or should i wait????

It's really strange that they said that to you.... I called to ask if I should fill out the secondary and I was told by the admissions office that I should wait until I am invited for an interview to fill it out. I'm confused as to why they would tell us different things. My primary application was verified at the beginning of June and I didn't get a confirmation that it was received until late August, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

They tell you to bring the secondary and the secondary fee with you to the interview. I wouldn't fill it out until you receive an invite from the school. I received a link to the secondary in my interview invite email, but I know you can find it online. If you want to fill it out to have it ready ahead of time, go for it, but don't send it in. You'll lose that $60 unless they grant you an interview.

Anybody have a list of interview questions for this school?

Go to interview feedback (top of the page)...go to NYCOM and you can make up a list of questions based on peoples feedback.

That is because they now give the secondary everywhere. I am not even bothering. Got into Touro California!!! Wooohooo!!!!!

So my interview is on nov 10th, and I haven't filled out the secondary yet. I have two questions.

1) If I have a pre-health committee letter, How should I fill out the secondary application where it says Faculty (science) and Faculty? Fill one out and indicate prehealth letter and leave the rest blank?

2) How should I send in my pre-health letter? just ask my committee advisor to snail-mail to the school?

Please respond, Thank you!

I'll be there nov 10th too! are you morning interview or evening? I Just put the name of the individual who is the head of the medical committee at my school she was also the one who wrote my letter, I didn't indicate it, I figure when they read my letter of rec they'll match the names. I also put the name of the DO and MD who wrote letters of recommendation for me. I snail mailed it but two months ago and called to confirm they had it when I got called for an interview.

My application was released on 10/19 and I haven't heard anything beyond the "we received your application" email. I am in state. Should I send my LOR's in or write a letter of intent? I know a secondary=interview and I see people have had varying wait times, I'm just curious and a little nervous since I think I will really like the school.

Thanks very much for the reply. Can't wait to see you there and I Think I have the morning interview, because they told me something about 11AM. So I don't know if they meant my interview is at 11AM or go there at 11 AM(anyone please confirm). Yeah, I sent an email to my committee and they told me that they have already sent the letters out to all of osteopathic schools I am applying to. As for physician letter, I don't think I will have one, since it is only stronly recommended and not required.

Thanks, I have that too but it doesn't help. I wasn't sure whether they meant interview at 11AM or come in at 11 AM. Anyone please confirm if the time 11 AM they told me is the interview time or interview session starting time.

They told me to be there at 8:45 cause my interview is 9, I am going to call and confirm, better to be safe. Either way I will see you Tuesday 🙂

just an FYI.

i'm going to be in nyc on 11/9, so i called nycom to tell them i'd be in the area. the woman's response was "well, even if the committe is considering your application, we're currently scheduling interviews for february."

damn!

haha... wow thats pretty harsh
are you in state/oos?

so on oct. 6th i was invited for an interview, and the secondary was attached to the e-mail and they said bring it with you....today (basically 1 month later) i get an e-mail saying i am encouraged to complete the secondary online.....what's the deal? did this e-mail go out to everyone, and should i just bring my secondary to the interview?

thanks!

yeah so I just received that same email?? I thought they were selective in regard to who can submit a secondary? Maybe the recession is beginning to affect them and they need more money from secondaries. lol

Now I'm seriously confused. I got the original "receipt of app" email a few weeks ago, but I just got this a few minutes ago.

"We are pleased to acknowledge receipt of your AACOMAS application. The Admissions Committee will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, with interviews beginning in November and continuing until late spring. All NYCOM applicants are invited to submit our online Supplemental Application. Please visit our web site at www.nyit.edu/nycom and follow the application instructions. If you should encounter any difficulties with completing our online application, please e-mail us at [email protected], and we will do our best to assist you quickly."

How can all applicants be invited to fill out a secondary??

I'm very very confused as well....I interview next week and last week the woman at Admissions told me to bring it with me. I'm going to call today so I'll let you all know what Admissions says to do with regards to the supplement and the interview!

Ahhhh - could you make the process any more confusing?

so i was antsy (and don't feel like doing my ELISA at work anyways lol) so i called and before i could even finish my question the receptionist said that the e-mail was sent out in error (i guess to the people who have already been invited to the interview) and not to worry and just bring the secondary to the interview....i think they have gotten a bunch of calls already and will be sending out another e-mail telling us to ignore that one....hope this helps everyone panicking right now haha

Yeah I just got this too??? I was so excited until I read it. What is going on, do we have an interview or do we all have to fill the secondaries out now?

Ya I was excited for a second too, now I think they just up and changed the format mid season.

Dear Applicant for the 2010 Entering Class,

Our Supplemental Application process has just been updated and it is now offered in an online format. If you have already been sent an invitation for interview with Supplemental Application attachments, it will not be necessary for you to complete the online form. Please follow the instructions in the original Invitation for Interview letter which was sent to you by e-mail.

your email is different than the one i got. that sounds like an interview invite. still vague though.

it seems really strange to change their policy mid-cycle.....imo (which doesn't really mean much but whatevs) if you haven't been offered an interview i would call and see if you have to complete the secondary (which is basically all info on the primary app) or if you could wait for an interview invite to do so, which might save some money

I got the same today. I visited http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Admissions_DO_Program.htm
and it seems from there that:

"EVERY applicant to NYCOM is invited to complete our online supplemental application and submit the NON-REFUNDABLE supplemental fee of $60.00 electronically."

My LORs were already in, so I just submitted the app an hour after I got the email and now its complete... have no idea why it was different for me than the others (others meaning the ppl who got invites with the secondary attached to invitation).

So you submitted the online supplemental already? Were there any essays?

Who's brilliant idea was it to change policy mid-cylce? Of course when I apply NYCOM decides they want more money and have EVERYONE complete a secondary it seems like. 😡

I totally agree. I got the email this morning and thought I was getting an interview. Doesnt matter as I am no longer interested in NYCOm due to other acceptances.

But yes, this really doesnt surprise me.

No kidding! I'm on that boat too with other acceptances and losing interest. 👎 It was nice to find out now that everyone completes the secondary. I am curious about the clinical clerkships in the third year though. It says 12 wks of surgery. Electives aside, that seems like a lot more than any other school, which typically "requires" only four weeks in the third year. Any thoughts? Would this be better for people considering a surgical speciality?
