Hi, I got accepted to NYCOM but I didn't like it all that much when I visited. We only got to talk to one student and the anatomy lab was really gross compared to other ones I have seen. So I am on waitlists at other places and I have been thinking that if I get a position on one of those I will take it. But then I started thinking that maybe I didn't get an accurate picture of what the school is really like because I didn't get to talk to many students. At all of the other schools I interviewed the students were gushing about how much they loved their schools. Do NYCOM students feel the same way?

I love NYCOM !!!

Let's just say I'm glad I'm done. We are getting a new dean, Dr. Barbara Ross Lee, the sister of Diana Ross. So things, I'm sure, will be changing yet again at NYCOM.

Greetings. I'm a first year at NYCOM and enjoy it so far. It's not easy though and at times is stressful, but show me a school that isnt. It seems alot of older students at NYCOM dont have very high opinions of the school because they were here when the school was drastically different. Facilities have dramatically improved over the past 3 years and the school has switched to the block system of exams, which has helped tremendously from what I hear. Long Island takes some getting used to, depending on where you're coming from. It's expensive and the area where the school is located is full of old money and snobby people, but the city is only a 25 minute train ride and the area has plenty to do in the summers. FWIW, the AOA just announced in their fall review that NYCOM was poised to be the "Best Osteopathic School in the Country". The new Dean, Dr. Ross-Lee is Diana Ross's sister, but she's quite accomplished on her own, being the Chair of the Board for AACOM and the first African American Woman to head a US medical school. The clinical affiliations at NYCOM are probably one of the best, if not the top, of the 19 schools. OMM is stressed and is definitely the strongest OMM department in the country, having won every major award it seems at the recent UAAO convocation in March, but it's not shoved down your throat. The anatomy lab is actually fairly nice, I think, about equal to most other schools I visited. There's about 4-5 students per table and 1 faculty member and a fellow are assigned to each 5-6 tables. Questions never go unanswered. They provide CDs with all dissections performed in detail for review. Class size is large, but faculty is abundant, almost too abundant. Notes are given out before class, sometimes negating the reason to go to class. Next year they'll have every lecture on streaming video, so you can watch a lecture from home if you have a cable modem. They're in the process of building a new cafeteria. Tuition is expensive, so take that into account if you get in anywhere else.

Hope this helps.

Hey njdocDO-

Thanks for the post about NYCOM. Could you tell me where I can find the AOA Review that you mentioned? I looked on AOA.net but couldnt find a "review" per se.

Thanks,

Careofme

Hey Careofme,

I'm not sure if the AOA would place something like that on its website. I know of it because our Dean reported it back to us in a speech he gave. The school received something like 5 commendations, more than any other school has ever received supposedly. The review was the 5 year review, mandatory of every DO school in the country. It's a very thorough review, taking several weeks in which the AOA interviews every faculty member and every affiliated hospital.

Its hard to find any official or unofficial ranking of DO schools. Many are very young and as a result hard to rank because they havent had time to prove themselves or establish a reputation.

My $0.02.

Do you know if there is any way whatsoever to get ahold of this so-called "review" ?

Careofme,
These reviews I would imagine are mainly internal documents. I highly doubt that they would be posted over the internet. Evey Osteopathic School must be reviewed by the AOA in order to maintain their accreditation. If you don't like the fact that its not available for you to peruse, you can always pick up the phone and call the AOA and see what they say.

Hey Careofme,

I doubt there's a way to obtain the official report on NYCOM, or any other school for that matter. You can contact the AOA, but these reviews are mostly in-house, for accreditation purposes. I dont think the AOAs purpose is to rank schools. It may do so internally, but showing favorites would not go over too well I think. I doubt you'll find a ranking of MD schools on the AMA website. The remark to NYCOM from the AOA saying the school was "Poised to be the best Osteopathic school in the country" was meant to be complementary, but nothing more I imagine. The fact that the school received so many commendations was the thing the Dean kept talking about.

The results of the review were revealed to the students of NYCOM in the Dean's State of the School Speech. I'm just repeating what he said. I'm sure if you contact NYCOM they'll be happy to relay the same information.

hope this helps....
