I am looking to shadow a DO for the month of August (is that long enough? I have other EC's on my resume, such as 2 years of clinical experience, research papers. I will not have time in the fall to shadow a DO. My question is, is NYCOM a good DO school? And if so, how good is it? What are the types of DO's that come out of there? I read that article that SENSE posted on one of the threads, regarding the derm DO. Anyone know what type of specializations come out of NYCOM? Where these guys do residencies?

I want to call NYCOM today and schedule an appointment with an advisor. I am not planning to apply until sometime next year for hopeful admissions into the fall of 2006, but I want to get the ball rolling. I need to shadow a good DO, for LOR's. Any knowledge regarding NYCOM's program would be most helpful. Thanks.

I will be attending NYCOM this fall and I can say it is a very good school. THere are currently two internal residents working at my local hospital and they enjoyed their time there and I believe both just received fellowships in endocrinology. The clinical rotations are excellent simply because of their large network of hospitals which will provided future "connections" and great exposures. Furthermore, I sincerely believe the education the first two years is greatly improving. This year they are opening up their robotic patient simulator which mimics illness and generates feedbak for the student and even interacts w/ the student somewhat -- can't wait to see this.

Im very excited and I sincerely cannot wait.

All I can say is that the matchlists of NYCOM speak for themselves. They're comparable to matchlists of several US MD schools.

personally, im impressed by the neurosurgery speciality. The only DO school to offer such a thing.

for the original poster, i think visiting the campus is the first step to any step in seeing how good the school is. You seem to be in the Long Island area, take the drive on a weekend, visit the area, especially the student areas, just ask questions. Feel free to pull a willing and friendly student aside to ask a couple questions.

i had this happen to me in chicago by a couple nosy propsies on campus. but i definitelyloving telling them what's up.

I'm applying to NYCOM cuz i love the connnections and networking that goes on. St. Barnabas is an EMT's aspiring to become an ER doc dream. It's in the city, sees everything, really nitty gritty.

The only beef ive heard about NYCOM is the rotations. students go to school in long island but rotate everywhere cuz the school does not have a teaching hospital. but that to me is a plus cuz if you want to be in the city, NYCOM has that.

But, the rotations are also a plus because you rotate through soo many new city area hospitals -- great exposure.

What do you mean the onlly school to offer such a thing? Last time I checked the PCOM web site they have a residency for neurosurgery. I think I saw something rediculous like 15 spots available.
