NYCOM interview day

its fast approaching, 2/20, and i want to make sure i am super prepared! im going to rattle off some questions now...

how is the day structured? is there alot of waiting, alot of walking? (the walking will make a huge difference in my shoes!)

i assume there is a tour, and how is it? is it really informative and attempts to answer every question you may have? does it leave you hanging?

are there 2 interviewers? do you get to chat with any current students at all? if so, do they have a say on the adcom? can you find out your interviewer's name before hand? it would be useful if i could look up some of their research... (thanks again for that list, ph!!)

any tips on what to ask if they say "any questions?" i usually dont ask anything...

should i go with a pants suit (gray) or a skirt suit (black pinstripes)? get a manicure? hair up or down?

i will be driving from my boyfriends apt, he lives on exit 64 off the LIE. i've made it to nycom from there in 45 minutes on a saturday morning. since i have to be there at 9, what time do you think i should leave? 7:30? i would like to be early and have time to chill in my car before hand, i dont have much experience with friday morning west bound LIE traffic.

Good luck on your interview. I can't shed any light on the day, but you might want to rethink what time you're leaving.

Westbound traffic on the LIE at 730am is literally insane. I'd rather be safe than sorry and leave myself PLENTY of time. If you sit in the car for a long time before, it's better than worrying about being late during the car ride.

would you recommend leaving around 7? or bypassing the LIE altogether and take the northern? any help would be fabulous...
and i know i will have to alter my plans in case of this screwy weather... but right now im just planning for a normal sun shiny day of LIE traffic..

i have also checked the interview feedback, but there wasnt much information about the whole day, just mostly interviewer questions. i do my research before i ask questions unlike some people. hehehe

I am from exit 63 on the LIE so I know what the driving situation is like. I would leave at 6:30 just to be on the safe side. You never know what is going to happen on the expressway or the northern so allow yourself extra-extra time on this day because the last thing you want to do is show uo late. funny thing is, i was there for 4 years and never had to experience LIE rush hour traffic. lucky me i guess. thanks.

Chrisobean, as I have already told you, I am interviewing the same day, so I am glad you started this thread. From what I have heard there are two interviewers, and apparently a lot of times one of them is a PhD (I don't know why, though). Also, there is a good deal of waiting during the interview time, so bring a book or something. There is a tour, but I don't know how big the campus, so I don't know how much walking is involved. I myself am going with a pants suit (black, I know it is not very original). As I am in Boston, I will be staying at a hotel in Westbury, I think. How long do you think it takes to get to campus from the hotels they suggest?

im sure the hotels are fairly close to the campus... but i dont know how close "fairly" is... maybe you should ask them when you book your room.

i have seen the campus, and its pretty isolated, theres another campus CW Post right next to it. from what i saw, the med school is a total of 3 buildings, close together. but the campus itself is large. i just asked about walking in case they decide to show us some far off place, i dont want to be walking around all day in big heels.
im scared the phd is going to grill me on my research.. i think i need to talk to my boss to get it all straight!

I interviewed and was accepted at NYCOM in January.

To get to NYCOM from the hotels they recommend takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Interviews are VERY laid back. Interviewers, including the PhDs, simply want to know why you want to be a doctor, why you want to be an osteopathic doctor, and why you want to go to NYCOM. There is no need to memorize the details of your research.

Some tips:

1. Leave yourself plenty of time to travel to campus. Try to visit the night before so that you can find it!

2. Review why you want to be an osteopathic physician, and how you would contribute to the NYCOM Class of 2008.

3. RELAX!

PM with specific questions.
