Hi all, I have my 1st interview coming up at NYCOM on DECEMBER 15th...anyone else going that day???

Also, I have checked out the interview feedbacks, etc... for NYCOM but does anyone else have advice. It's my 1st so I am extremely nervous.
Thanks 🙂

Hey....just be calm and have a positive attitude. My interviewer even told me to relax and not to worry about the interview. You won't be asked a ton of questions, but I did get asked about stem cell research on the Dec 2 interview, so be prepared.

Thanks!!! I am so nervous, but will try my best to relax 🙂 I have heard that most of the interviews were short so far, 10-15 minutes. Is this the norm for NYCOM?

Also, still looking for anyone else interviewing on the 15th??? 🙂

I interviewed today, just got back. Terrible weather and commute, but a nice day overall. I didn't realize it was the second largest class size of any medical school in the country...good facilities though, very high-tech. Very laid back, one-on-one, SHORT interview. Nothing major, the usual questions, even talked about tennis for a little bit. Very casual. I'm not sure if I could handle Long Island life for a couple years, but NYCOM seems to have a lot to offer as a med school. Good luck!

Did they happen to mention when you would hear?

Yeah, they said it usually only takes 2-3 weeks, but we're in that awkward period with the holidays, so we probably won't hear until beginning of January or so.

I just interviewed there today as well, and my interview was about 15-20 min. The hardest question I was asked was, "Tell me about a situation so hard in your life, you know if you could survive it you could survive anything."
Don't be scared, everyone there is really nice, and happy to answer any questions you have. The interview is very conversational, you will be asked to elaborate on what you have written on your secondary, since it is closed file. (Although I was told some students were asked what their GPA and MCAT was)
Good Luck! 🙂

Thanks you guys! Glad to hear positive experiences. I appreciate the advice 🙂 I did my undergrad on Long Island so i spent alot of time there, but i can see how it could take some getting used to depending on where u are coming from.
Anyway i'm happy to hear from you all! thanks again, and good luck :luck:

so...no one else here going to NYCOM on the 15th??? 🙂

They really start by about 1:30, and if mine was any indication, they're short. You could all very well be out of there by 3 or so. We also had two no-shows in our group last week, which the rest of us thought extremely rude, but that also worked in our favor timewise. Once again, good luck!

Thanks for the info! Have you heard back from them yet? If you have any other advice i'd love to hear it 🙂

Nope, haven't heard yet...probably won't until the same time you do, after the holidays, that's what they told us. Not too much advice I can give you...hopefully your day will be a little less hectic. The second years had exams all day when we were there, so we had kind of a makeshift lunch and tour...but it all came together fine. Our tour guides were really cool and informative...it was interesting seeing so many people preparing for an OMM practical though. It's amazing what a difference there is at NYCOM in terms of having an undergrad school, a large formal campus, and a very large class size in the med school...it was just a completely different atmosphere than any of the other schools I have been to thus far. As a result, make sure you ask everything that comes to mind, because there are many unique things about NYCOM...from class size to technology to where a med student can possibly afford to live in such an affluent area...

Hi. thanks for writing back. Unfortunately I don't have any other schools to compare it to yet. This is my 1st interview! i mean i know a lot about other schools, size, etc... but its not the same as interviewing and touring at another school. Either way, i'm just excited and nervous and want to try and get the most out of my day there. can I ask, did you bring anything with you, besides the secondary? I was thinking of bringing one of those interview folder things, the leather looking ones (i'm sure they have a name, but i have no idea what it is 😀). THANKS! :luck:

Yeah, I take this leather portfolio thing with me to all my interviews, and yet I haven't needed it yet in four interviews, and of course I don't look at it during the interview itself...so I guess it's mostly for show! You don't really need anything else with you, per se, just the secondary and the check. They give you a folder with info and such.

You put a copy of your transcript or any other documentations that might be needed in the portfolio. it doesn't hurt to bring it w/ you. Also, for those that uses "baron's guide to medschool interview" book, you would write down sample interviewing questions people ask and what your reply is. During the session, you can sit there and just review your notes to refresh you mind of how you're going to answer certain questions and why your answer is such. It is more than just for looks.

I know to many people it may seem like you're cheating, but those are your original answers anyways... if you prepare yourself, you wont be nervous, then you would be able to truly express yourself. Most people are nervous at interviews because they didn't prepare themselves for it. The interviewer could ask a simple question as to "how are you feeling today?" and certain people would choke from there.

That is what I do for my interviews. Goodluck!

Agree with EK,
Take a portfolio, it is useful and helpful... (other than making you look more professional). Take down the names of the people who interviewed you and send them a Thank you card, or jot some questions that comes up. When I interviewed, every interviewer asked at the end do you have any questions for me? If you jot them down as the day goes on you won't forget them, you'll sound more articulant and also show genuine interest. Also will introduce additional topics to speak about. There is nothing wrong with opening the portfolio and asking questions from there. It also won't hurt to take down the names of the tour guides who showed you around the school, it won't help your chances of getting in, but it's courteous and I am sure some will appreciate it.

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback. I already had my NYCOM interview last week, but thanks again. Hopefully I will have future interviews as well 🙂
