Hello everyone!!

after a long wait for any news from NYCOM, i finally received a letter of prov acceptance today. I would need to attend the MedPrep program for 4 weeks in the month of June. Can anybody offer any information regarding the program? I would really appreciate it. Also, if I do 'successfully complete" their courses, I am guaranteed acceptance into fall07 right?

Finally, a huge thanks to everyone on this site for putting up with my whining and complaining. You guys have been a huuuuuge help 🙂

i am indeed a NY resident and i was complete in Sept, with an interview letter received around october. stats arent great, part of why im in the MedPrep program. but good luck to you and with all the schools!!

Don't worry too much it has only been a month 🙂...there is a deposit deadline tomorrow for those who were accepted in nov. maybe they will send out more invites once they see their numbers.

The program is meant to help you (us) get ready for battle, not to filter people out. According to them, 15/16 MedPrep students from last year completed the program successfully. The 1 student that didn't was because she realized that med school was not for her🙁.

Their description matched my situation (to a tee) 😀 -
I have a graduate degree in Bio, have 6 years of hands on medical experience (ER, OR, Trauma), 4 yrs bench research experience, 2 yrs clinical research (with pending publications), have received several awards for academic excellence, etc, but have been out of school for 3 years and my MCAT was in the low 20's (what can I say, that test is a nightmare!!!😱).

So now, the confusion is over and I'm just looking forward to June!

I can't wait to meet everyone and kick some major medical school butt!!!👍

I was in medprep lastyear, they only accept 5 out of 20 people, 5 out of 19 last year since 1 woman left becuase of her baby. Medprep was really difficult and worth it to do. All you need to do is score higher than 15 other people in your class on topics like biochemistry physiology and mathematics. But it is really basic, and I think people do not try and this may be why they do not enter. Good Luck

Reading this comment is a bit surprising/upsetting. Not because I don't think I can do it, but b/c this is completely the opposite of what the admissions person told me over the phone. I was accepted at other schools w/o any MedPrep requirement and I turned down their invitation. I chose this option b/c it did not sound like it was a "compete to get someone out of here" scene. Moreover, it was emphasized that we are not competing for a seat. I am going to call the office again and figure this out.

I called the admissions office this morning and confirmed that what you wrote on your last post is not accurate. I don't really know if you wrote this b/c this is how the program worked last year or because you wanted to provide SDN users with wrong information. Sorry to think the latter but I have seen other people do similar things.

I do have a request -
Before you post information that may cause anxiety to incoming students', please think about what you're writing and make sure that you are not providing false information. This is a very exciting but stressful time for all of us (you've been there so you should know). Many of us rely on the service provided by SDN to get through this confusing process. SDN is a great help to current & prospective students and it is a privilege to have it available.

Now - To ALL students that need to know ACCURATE details about the MedPrep program:
1- You are NOT competing with other students but you do need to work hard. That should not be surprising to any of us.
2 - +/- 20 students are invited into the program each year. A seat is available to all students upon successful completion of the program.
3 - The program's main objective is to prepare us for the arduous work ahead.
4 - If you have more questions about the program, do not hesitate to call the school. The staff is pleasant, they understand our concerns, and are willing to help.

I do not gain by informing you of this. I do believe the admissions tell you this to support a quota of under represented and under privaleged. I am sorry if you feel this is negative comments. I am a hispanic male and I have been through the process. All of the students are from new york and all are minority and of lower income. Some of my class mates who did not get in didn't refuse the other offers since medprep will end at the end of june. If you try very hard you will be fine. Your letter does not say CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCEPTANCE TO THE CLASS OF 2010. This is because you have not been accepted yet. Our mentor has just left and the new one will take over with the same rules implemented. You seem passionate about your dream, and I believe you will get in. sorry if I offended anyone. I just wished some one told some of my friends this information before they started. Good LUCK to all.

I stand corrected as I have spoken to the directors. You are accurate you will not be competing against each other this year. I was told my class competed because of so many people applied for the 2010 class. I am very sorry, but I was informed you must score above an 85 % for guaranteed admission. The test is not scaled so as long as you score over 85 you will be fine. Once again I stand corrected.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify this issue. I was not offended by your post, I was simply concerned and eager to find out why I was told something over the phone and was reading contradicting information on SDN. I don't mind facing challenges, but I also don't want to get close to my fellow classmates knowing that my hard work would prevent them from achieving their goals and vice-versa.

Hey JP so I interviewed in Early Feb. I really don't remember the exact date but i heard 3 weeks after that i would be in the Med Prep program. I just got some more info about the program but their letter didn't go into detail about the classes.

Looking forward to meeting everyone as well. As per my last conversation with the admissions office, the lectures will cover numerous topics ranging from science relevant to out first year to note/test taking techniques. It seems like it will be pretty interesting.

I was surprised that in my letter they encouraged us to bring our laptops - I'm curious as to when we'll need them.

Hello all, i spoke to michelle the admissions medprep lady(very nice and helpful) about the computer situation, as i do not own a laptop yet...she said everyone who has a lap top to bring it, and those who dont they will try to see if the can provide us with one....as for friday it is an oreintation day and we will not have a class.... CANT WAIT TO MEET ALL OF YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore, I don't know where the statistics about 5/20 people being accepted is coming from. As from what I know, in previous year, most (not sure if it was all) students were accepted into the entering class starting in Fall.

It is a tough one month (at least it was for me). There is a great deal of pressure knowing that the completion of one month will sort of determine whether you will be accepted into the school or not; but generally speaking, students do very well and from what I have seen, all the students work very hard. Just be prepared for all your learning issues for your DPC sessions and attend the lectures on time.

Before you know it, you will be starting in the Fall. Let me know if I can help you with anything.

I was told the same thing by a friend of mine that was in the program last year. It is very odd that someone who claims they were in the program last year does not know the qualifications for getting an unconditional acceptance and is not aware of how many people got in last year since all of the medprep students know each other.

Anway by now you have heard the real deal and this week you should meet student's from last year's program.

I totally agree with what ElPaso7 wrote. A very good friend of mine went through medprep last year and I confirmed this information with her.

Please don't provide misinformation to others and add to what is already a nerve-wrecking situation.
