NYCOM vs. CCOM???!

Hi all,

I've been accepted to CCOM and have an interview pending w/ NYCOM. For those of you who have interviewed or know both of the programs, which would you choose??? I don't know too much about NYCOM, plus living in New York/Long Island area seems really expensive. Thanks!

I had an interview with NYCOM. I really like the school, espeically its affiliation with a lot of good hospitals in NYC. The technology there is pretty advanced. I don't know about its basic science education during the first two years though. The only thing i am concerned about the school is its hugh class. (around 300 students). In general I like the school. I live 30 mins from campus.

As for CCOM, I will interview there on March 21st. It is highly recommended by the fellow of in the hosptial where I volunteered. It curriculumn seems very well defined. I think it is one of the DO schools that are over 100 years.

I don't know which one i would choose if i got accepted by both. But I do like the fact that CCOM provides dorm.

I was stuck with the same predicament! (BTW, thanks for your valuable insights!) At the end, I decided to go to my #1 choice, CCOM. I am equally impressed by the program so it is all personal. I want to go to a new city and experience the midwestern culture. (Good food and pleasant people ?) Good luck on your interview at NYCOM! Hope to see you in the fall! 😉

You're both right, chicago isnt cheap, and neither is NY. CCOM isn't actually in chicago though, it's in a western suburb. I'm from Glendale Heights (about 15 minutes from Downers Grove), and went to high school in Lombard which is the town right next to it. I even spent this last new years eve in downer's grove! It isn't 'cheap' but it's not crazy expensive either since it is a suburb. I've lived there my whole life and have always liked the area.

Hmmm...I went to high school in Lombard. Our high school colors are Maroon and Gold. 😀

Downers Grove and the surrounding suburbs will offer 2BRs around $900. The area around CCOM is quite established and the neighboring suburbs such as Naperville and Lombard offer options to avoid going to the city.

There are so many established suburbs nearby that you have a lot of options for shopping, entertainment, living, etc.

Can't say the same for the area aroung NYCOM.

hi all,

thanks for your responses and input. I just came back from my trip to nyc yesterday. i have to say that i wasn't very impressed with nycom at all. It's in a very empty neighborhood out in Long island, there is no on campus housing available, and students are told they need a car to get to campus every day. I'm not too fond of driving in the snow in the wintertime to get to class. It shares a campus with NYIT, an undergraduate program and has a huge class of nearly 300 people. the students didn't seem too happy there and kept mentioning things they DIDN'T like about the program, such as the constant changes with their curriculum and lack of communication between students and professors. One advantage is they have a newly implemented PBL curriculum, open to about 40 students in the class.

Overall, i had a much better vibe when i went to visit ccom back in november. the students at ccom were happy and had only positive things to brag about regarding the curriculum, strength of preparation for the boards, and rotations. i pick ccom over nycom!! 😀

Just another two cents from a local. I grew up in Downers Grove. It's an easy place to live, but just remember it's the burbs, not the city. It will be much cheaper and more laid back, for sure. Sometimes I wish I wasn't from the area, cause I would be tempted to go. However, moving home isn't really in the cards for me. Enjoy!

For what its worth, and i'm not sure much if you've already decided, but I had the same worries abt the curriculum. 2 yrs ago the curriculum sucked apparently, so they changed it. the class of 2009 has an improved curriculum, but there are still kinks (related to how often exams are, I believe) which are to be improved for hte class of 2010 - one student i talked to said that exams are to be every 6 weeks so as to have more time to study for boards and other things.
as for the communication, i've heard the exact opposite, that the faculty and staff are open to suggestions and changes, as evidenced by the quick changes in the curriculum. however, students might feel as though there isn't good communication between students and faculty if they dont go to class - and a LOT of nycom students dont go to class since its all streamed.
