Hi All,
Anyone hear any news on the NYCOM Priority Waitlist movement????

viswanad,

I am also on the priority waitlist and have not heard anything yet. Do you know in what way do they usually inform you if you get off waitlist (phone call, mail, both ). I really want to go to nycom and it seems like they are either taking their time with the waitlist or have a full class with no one dropping spots.

i just called today and asked... the secretary said no movement yet, but hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

🙁 😕

thanks for the update simsima03. I'll keep my fingers crossed and check the mail. good luck

Hi Gang,
Thanks for the update. However, this 2 weeks story I have been hearing for a while now so I don't know how much I believe.. I called and here is the update:

1. The class is not full so they will be using their waitlist
2. As for when, they say "there has not been any movement yet"
3. They said we are still getting a good number of declines so they do plan on using the waitlist

I hope we hear soon.. Anyone figure out the difference between: Priority Waitlist and Hold/Accept List???

Just by the wording of the letters, I am assuming that the "Accept-hold" are above the "priority waitlist" applicants. One thing I don't get is, if the class is not full and the fact that there are a good number of declines, then why the waiting game? Why does it take a significant amount of time to fill those spots with a movement of the waiting list. I am just very frustrated because I really want to go to nycom but I also have an acceptance at St. George's in the caribbean. I would decline St. George's in a second if taken of nycom waiting list but St. George's starts in mid august instead of the late-august start of nycom. This puts me in a nervous situation of checking this forum and my mailbox awaiting any news of waiting list movement. Well, I have my fingers crossed for movement as soon as possible. Good luck to all.

Dmitinyr,
I am as frustrated as you are... I am in a similar situation but have planned to go to another DO school that starts mid-august so I need to find a place, etc if NYCOM does'nt come thru very soon.
I called today and asked the question about Accept/Hold list vs. Priority List..

The response I got today was that the Accept/Hold list has a higher priority list than the "Priority Waitlist" but they do look at everything... I asked if they ranked the waitlists yet and they said NO.. so I still don't get how they select who get's off the waitlist.

I was told today that they plan on looking at the waitlists in about 3 weeks.

That's all I know...

See, this is what I don't understand. Why is it that other schools that start at the same time or earlier than NYCOM have already ranked and dwelled into their waitlist and NYCOM hasn't done it yet. If they know sometime in June that people are declining spots and spots are empty, then why does it take them until late July and August just to start thinking about the waitlist and then ranking it and actually accepting people off it. Viswanad, if their plan of looking at the waitlist in "about 3 weeks" is a true prognosis of their plans then it really puts me in a bind. By late July and early-August if I don't hear back from NYCOM, I will have to basically pack up everything and make plans as if I was going to St. George's and literally wait on my moving boxes for a responce from nycom. I just hope that they start looking a waitlist in the next week or two.

Viswanad, which other school are you accepted at? When do they start?

Can yous ee if you can begin at St. George's in January, rather than this fall -- if your willing to wait a few weeks.

I would think that I would need an actual good reason to defer to January. I already paid most of my payments for the 1st term and me backing out now and saying that I'll go in January will just make it seem like I am waiting for something better. I think it would have been fine for me to have applied for the January term from the beginning and with that taking care of all of the chances of a late acceptance of waitlist, but now I don't think that it's an option.

I wonder whether it is wiser for us to just tell NYCOM our issue: We need to know because we have to make plans for moving, etc. and whether NYCOM would be able to let us know YES or NO by August 1st.

Hey guys! Thanks for the posts for updating everyone who are on the waitlist. I've been on the priority waitlist since January and have heard nothing from them since then. I think it would be a good idea to let them know about our problem but for some reason I have a feeling that they're not going to do anything about it.

"I wonder whether it is wiser for us to just tell NYCOM our issue: We need to know because we have to make plans for moving, etc. and whether NYCOM would be able to let us know YES or NO by August 1st."

This is something to think about. Yet, I don't want to sound too forward in a way that makes my comments seem to them like an ultimatum which might turn them off. I wonder what is better, do this over the phone or go there personally and talk to a person? I still don't know if I want to do that. I really don't feel right calling an admissions office and all I have to ask is "Has anything happened with my application?". I don't know why but to me this seems like I am being an annoyance and decrease my chances. So, basically I wait until I am contacted and have all you guys do the calling for me.

Well, I feel your pain guys. I have also been in contact with NYCOM and guess what? I got the "the admissions comittee willl meet in two to three weeks" story myself. Anyway, I thought i'd share my misery. Good luck everyone. Keep us posted on any news!!

Hello,

I'm not sure if this would help anyone at all but I interviewed in april and was waitlisted in may. accepted in early august... about 2 weeks before school started which was middle of august. There is no point to call NYCOM and ask them about the waitlist thing. I am not sure if telling them your situation would change anything.

If and when you do get accepted, you will learn that the paper work at NYCOM takes ages to complete. It took me 4 months to receive a letter telling me that I've done well on a class, when it could have been done in 2 days. Did I forget to mention that i had to pick it up myself even though they said it was going to be mailed ? heh.

This summer, I went over to student affairs to ask for a letter stating that I'm a full time student. I've paid my tuition and such and you know what ?? They didn't give it to me. A week later... they called me and said I can go pick it up. Its pretty funny how I could have gotten my letter in literally FIVE MINUTES, but took me one whole week instead, and thats TEN THOUSAND AND EIGHTY MINUTES.

I am sorry people have to be in a tight spot, I was in your shoes last year but it was worth the wait. I don't think i was prority waitlist or accept/hold... so if I got in, I'm sure those on the higher waitlist can get in as well. Goodluck.

 If you don't read titles, read mine to see why I'm laughing!

I've thought about it: why don't they just give everyone not fully accepted a spot on a list called, "We want you, but you have to wait" and then, internally, they keep track of Accept-Hold, Priority Waitlist and Waitlist.

I dunno if you've thought about it, but "ACCEPT-HOLD" is sort of analogous to this: you're in the airport. you have a ticket for the last plane out to get you home for Christmas. the airline counter agent tells you, "I'm sorry, you have a special ticket, and because we're overbooked, you have to wait to see if someone doesn't show up before you can fly."

Basically, from calling NYCOM, reading posts and looking at the system from an (im)patient point of view, I see we're at a stage where:

1) They "filled all seats" by mid June.
2) People are declining.
3) The ADCOM will have a definite tally of open seats by the end of July. They probably have it now, but they just want to torture those who have to wait! :meanie:
4) They'll probably meet on Wednesday, Aug 4th to decide... they like meeting on Wednesdays...*shrug* I dunno why. They'll probably meet on a Tuesday to "spice things up." 🙂
5) The letters will probably generate by Friday, Aug 6th. I've noticed correspondence from NYCOM takes about 8 days to get to me from the date on the printed letter, and I live in South Carolina.

Why the ADCOM meeting on the 4th? My best guess is to rank people on the lists if needed. I don't think they will need to rank the Accept-Hold list, and any ranking will probably occur in the Waitlist candidates. Their overall concern here is: seats=revenue, and they want to fill *all* seats with the best candidates. They sent out "intent" letters to the ACCEPT-HOLD people, and I can believe a few didn't respond or sent in the letter marked "take me off the list." So, NYCOM knows how many A-Hs are salivating to get in if they have a seat. I see they've not sent letters of intent to the Priority Waitlist, but some have probably sent letters in.

Boys and girls, we're in a transition state between 3) and 4), and the time is fast fast fast approaching when everything has settled.

If you need therapy, PM me; I'll be glad to try assisting you in finding a bright spot on which you can focus!

I agree with Drfting Sun that NYCOM probably will rank the waitlist and tally up all of the seats by late July and then in early August they will start contacting people to fill those seats because no matter how much they say that the education is important and the production of doctors for the future, they are in the business of making a profit from producing doctors and like any smart businessman, they will try to fill in every last seat in order get the highest profit possible. I'll go with you on the fact that they meet on Wednesdays and so August 4th is the time to meet. That leaves them 7.5 days to get in contact with me about a spot because I have plane to take to St. George's on Aug. 12th.

According to Drfting Sun's schedule, they should be able to make a decision by Aug 5th, so maybe you can call them the Monday after that (the 9th?). Hope it works out!

Michele,

Thanks for the encouragement. I really hope that I get into nycom. I like ny and don't want to leave. Hopefully, we all get what we wish for.

Hopefully you'll get into NYCOM. I've met a lot of people from our class, and I'm excited about our group! Let me know how it turns out. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions...

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist. 👍

Anyone called lately to check the status of movement / when the ADCOM is meeting?

I know that I haven't called lately. I am kind of reluctant to do so, I guess afraid to piss them off with any more questions. Still, if I don't hear anything back by Aug. 1st, I will call them and find out whats what. If you want, you can call. I always feel like I am an annoyance to them and given that my acceptance is in their hands, I don't want them in a bad mood.

I'm trying to get something accomplished here.

* 3 weeks from the 9th is July 30th. They love wednesday's, so the 28th is the 3 week mark.

domsport said:

I'm beginning to think they're going to meet the 28th. This "zen moment" came to me while reviewing the posts on this thread...as a sort of "synthesis" from what I read. One week, they go from saying 3 weeks to the next week saying 2 or 3.

I say that we "We want you, but you gotta wait"-statused people start a "NYCOM Sanity" thread, where we get ideas together about what needs improved in the processing of apps and the notification process, so we can feed the ADCOM workable solutions to this craziness. There *MUST* be a way to incorporate technology into the process even more to speed up/simplify this process....for them and us...and the people coming after us...and if we find ourselves here, later. 😀

Hello My Fellow Waitlisters,

In an effort to help our team out, I contacted NYCOM (as an unidentified person) to find out what's new... Here were my questions and their answers..

Question 1: Can you tell me if there has been any movement on the Priority Waitlist?

Response: No. Not yet. We are probably going to start looking in a couple of weeks.

Question 2: Do you know if there are any open spots?
Response: No. The Class is full.

Question 3: Does that mean if I am on the priority waitlist my chances are slim to none?
Response: No. I would'nt say it's impossible. I guess time will tell.

End of Conversation......

Basically, this conversation did'nt get me anywhere as I am still clueless on what's going to happen...

I hope the synthesis performed by Drifting sun is accurate about July 28th but my gess is they will look at it a week before class starts.....

Hi Viswanad,

Thanks for the update!

monalisa

Here is what I don't understand. A previous post said that they are "getting a good number of declines". So, how can they have a full class? Don't they always go to their waiting list? I was always under the impression that every school accepts about twice as many people as they expect for their entering class just to make sure that they get that many who actually matriculate. This fact is with the assumption that most if not all schools have to dwell into their waitlist to make sure that they fill all of the spots at the beginning of the year. What I really dislike is the lackadasical attitude that they approach this issue with. By this I mean, every time a student asks them about the waitlist and any recent progress, they always say "maybe in two weeks". I say, if you are not sure when and if you will go into the waitlist, then don't tell students and fill them with hope that something might happen in two weeks. So, now the two week prophecy would be on Aug. 4th. Great!!! 😡 Lets just say, I am not holding my breath!

Hi all -
Here's an update that I got from Admissions on Friday...

"There's no movement on the waitlist as of yet. However, we are probably going to be sending out letters next week..."

So... Drifting Sun may be right about the 28th. 🙂 .. Keep your fingers crossed and good luck to all!

Thanks coolio. So does the fact that "they're are probably going to be sending out letters next week..." mean that they have ranked the waiting list and next week they will be sending letters to the top ranked applicants. Either way, if true, this news is good. As long as nycom goes to waitlist as early as possible, we all have a chance to get in regardless whether we're "priority", "accept-hold" or regular waitlist. Good luck to all.

Yeah, the more I think about this, the less sense it makes. Will you tell us what question you asked to get this response? What was the context of the conversation?

It's probably best for me to not go on a question rampage and wait for you to explain some of the context. 😀 Does "waitlist" = Priority? or just EVERYONE on the waitlist? It's just pretty obvious that NO ONE on any tier of the waitlist can "move" until given papers to do so.

The insinuation is that more than one letter is going to be sent, and probably this week coming up.

First of all, I hope I get an acceptance package. Then, I hope the rest of us outspoken "waiters" on here like dimitrinyr, viswanad, monalisa, Coolio30 and domsport... all of you who've been so patient to stick in this muck for so long -- some of us like monalisa have been waiting for over 7 months now!!-- I hope you all get in too.

I hope you all have your stuff packed, ready, and have been reading about financial aid, lenders and getting documents ready for the FAFSA, as well as to have transcripts sent to NYCOM from your school(s). All that craziness packed in with trying to find an apartment and choose the way you're going to be indebted would be one mell-of-a-hess!

Thanks, Coolio30, for calling Admissions and reporting to us! Gimme some more context, so I can read more into this news. 🙂

Coolio, thanks for the update! 👍

Just wanted to say thanks for the phone calls guys! 👍 I broke a sweat every time I dialed the admissions office, so I know how nerve wracking it can be! The truth is, although I' ve been obsessed with my mailbox and SDN posts about NYCOM, We only have to stress for about another two weeks...once orientation comes with or without a letter, its all over! Does anyone even know the exact date of NYCOM orientation? I have to tell you guys it is hard enough to be on this waitlist with all of its uncertainties but I am regular waitlist and on my letter it states in bold letters PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT PRIORITY WAITLIST WILL BE GIVEN FIRST CONSIDERATION 😱 ...so congrats to those of you on priority...its one less thing to stress over!! 😉

Good Luck everyone!!

domsport

Orientation is Aug. 24-27. Term starts Aug. 30.
So, domsport, we have a bit more than two weeks. But you're right, if we don't hear back from nycom at the time of the orientation, we have no chance. Good luck to all.

Hi Gang,
Called NYCOM again today... Guess What... Today they said Schaeffer and the Admissions committee is on VACATION so they won't be looking at the waitlist this week....... This is absolutely ridiculous.

anyway, I thought you would want to share in my misery. But, a few more weeks and it's all over....

Get on with your lives. ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Wow!!! What a huge surprise. They have been making vauge comments in response to questions regarding waitlist movement, so I don't really expect them to have any solid plans. Yet, doesn't it seem a bit odd that a month before orientation at your medical school, you as the dean of admissions take a vacation. I don't know, maybe it is just me. If you are an optimist, then you might say that just because Mr. Schaeffer is out of town this week doesn't mean that they will not be sending out anything this week (they could have decided who to send out letters to at the end of last week). If you're an pessimist, then you are probably saying that all this is pretty sad and funny at the same time. I am a bit of both and so say that it's not the best idea for the dean of admissions to take a vacation before the entire class is filled and settled (but as a worker he is entitled to a vacation as are everyone) and that I was starting to get my hopes up last week when someone posted that nycom people told him they will probably be sending out letters this week. Now, I really don't know what to think. The only thing that I want is for the waitlist to start moving as soon as possible so that we all don't have to worry for much longer. Good luck.

I will not look at this thread or concern myself with the Adcom at NYCOM until I have a letter in my hand, or Aug 24th rolls around, which ever comes first.

I'm tired of the sick pyschological and emotional rollercoaster I am on because I read these posts and get my hopes up, only to have them cut off at the knees.

I wish you all well, and I am not going to follow this until I actually KNOW something by having it in my hand or the 24th has passed.

I have better stuff to do with my life than to follow this craziness! 🙁

To all of you on the "you're good, but you gotta wait" lists: :luck:

drfting sun,

I wish we all could be as patient as you. Unfortunately, I will be continuing to check this site and this thread for updates.

People, I don't know what the deal is with everyone else, but I called today and my acceptance package is being sent out today, 7/30/04.

I *now* have a seat and will be attending NYCOM in the Fall. 😀

:luck: :luck: :luck: to everyone who's been following this thread. 😎

I just called nycom, they said that "there hasn't been any movement as of yet, but they are sending out letters today." So, given the fact that they didn't tell me that my acceptance package is being sent to me, Drfting Sun was ahead of all of as (I believe he was on the "accept-hold list"). Hopefully, I will get a letter in the next couple of days. Good luck to all.

PS: Congrads, Drfting Sun 👍 👍

congrats drifting sun! You were on the accept-hold list, right?

I called nycom and joann told me they're calling those who are on the accept-hold list (about 12 people), then if they don't accept the seat nycom will get to the priority wait list.

Please...get to it already!!!!

Thanks monalisa for that piece of news. I'm curious how many of these 12 people are waiting on NYCOM and would choose NYCOM over all other schools. I am hoping not many. I was actually expecting less people to be on the accept-hold list, but we'll have to live with 12. Probably, by monday they will know who out of the accept-hold list will be attending NYCOM and will start contacting the priority waitlisters like myself. I got to say that I am very nervous because I have two weeks until I have to leave for Grenada. Hopefully, I NYCOM will contact me next week. Good luck to all!! :luck:

Yes, I was on the accept-hold list.

I had to work today. I got home to find Joanne called me and left a message saying, "Please call us today or by Monday." So, I better be on the phone Monday, huh? 😀

You can bet I'll be giving a resounding, "YES!! I'll show you the money!" 🙂

Fellow Waitlisters,

First of all... Congrats to drifting Sun!

I called Friday as well and was fortunate enough to get hold of Dr. Schaefer himself on the phone... So... I finally got some real feedback from him.

He said that the number of declines is very similar to last year's class...So, they will use the waitlists.... There are 3 waitlist categories:

1. accept/Hold
2. Priority Waitlist
3. Regular Waitlist

Everyone on the Accept/Hold list will be accepted. Then they will determine the number of spots open. Then, calls will be made to the priority watilisters...after that... regular waitlister..

He said he has no idea how much [if all] of the priority waitlisters will be accepted. They will rank them next week after they find out about the spots open based on the declines on the accept hold..

Hold that helps... good Luck!!!

First of all, thanks viswanad for the update. Good to see that even the dean of admissions is down to earth enough and has the patience to answer applicants's questions over the phone instead of having the secretaries handle it. So, given the messege that was left on Drfting Sun's machine "Please call us today or by Monday", I am assuming that by Tuesday they will know how many spots they have left open and will probably rank the priority waitlist on Tuesday or Wednesday and start calling people on the priority waitlist on Wednesday or Thurday. Still this is all good news and I am glad to see that some progress is finally being made in the waitlist situation. It is people like me, monalisa and others who have been on the waitlist since January/Februrary who have been waiting the longest and just want to have a final decision so that we can prepare ourselves for the start of medical school. Good luck to all. 👍

Thanks for the update! Hang in there guys, we (the priority waitlisters) might finally get a call from from nycom next week so that's good news...

dmitrinyr-i know life is gonna be so much easier if you stay in NY so i hope you get a call from nycom b4 you leave for Grenada.

I called Joanne back today. She just was going down the list of the Accept-Holds, calling everyone to confirm sending out a package and that instructions for sending in the $1500 check, etc were included. They anticipate package arrival on Wed or Thursday, and we are all given 1 week to have the checks back in NYCOM's hand.

She laughed when I told her I had already called on Friday and spoken with someone else and received the good news.

So, the calls, I ascertain, were just to inform. The letters were going out on Friday. That's all I know... the rest is speculation... like "do they wait until after the checks are in to see how many priority waitlisters they're going to pull?" I mean, it makes sense to me: you declare a seat FILLED when you have the deposit... not when someone tells you, "Yes, I'm coming to your school."

Monalisa, dimitrinyr... I hope you're both ranked high enough to be pulled. I'm following this thread, and keeping as much positive "ENERGY" going in your directions as possible!

I know it doesn't help much....but AT LEAST you two are IN somewhere else, and have a secure spot. There are many others out there not given a spot. I can just hear your greedy little egos saying, "But but but!! I wanna go to NYCOM!! Hurry up!!" 😀

Again, I wish you all the best. :luck:

Monalisa, dimitrinyr... I hope you're both ranked high enough to be pulled. I'm following this thread, and keeping as much positive "ENERGY" going in your directions as possible!

I know it doesn't help much....but AT LEAST you two are IN somewhere else, and have a secure spot. There are many others out there not given a spot. I can just hear your greedy little egos saying, "But but but!! I wanna go to NYCOM!! Hurry up!!" 😀

Again, I wish you all the best. :luck:

So, they start later than any other school to go to their waitlist and now might actually wait another week just to get conformation from people that they accept of "accept hold list". Whatever happened to the usual "you have 1-2 days to respond to this offer of acceptance or the seat will go to the next person on the list". If they do wait 1 more week to just start going through priority waitlist, it would be a total letdown. If they start doing so in a week, my chances of getting into nycom goes down to very low numbers. later.

Wow! Congrats to those on Accept/Hold!! At least we are finally seeing some life at NYCOM with the waitlist situation! Good luck to all those on priority WL, Im gonna need a small miracle to get pulled from the regular waitlist but im keepin' the faith!

Good luck all! Just another week or so! 👍
