Hey guys, I am applying to both temple and NYCPM and wanted to know what types of equipment you have to buy..besides books. Also, does anyone know if you can get the military health professionals scholarship for podiatry? Thanks, I would really appreciate any feedback. 🙂

do a search on SDN for the military thing - it has been discussed before. It is not a straight forward yes or no. you can also call the different branches of the military to ask how it works for podiatry. I do not think it is as good as what is offered to the MDs/DOs.

For NYCPM you'll need to rent or buy a microscope for the 1st year. By the end of the 1st or 2nd year you'll need an opthalmascope, stethescope, blood pressure cuff, reflex hammer, tunning forks, and other little things for physiology lab and physical assessment. All of which is sold or rented in the school store at NYCPM. or you can search for better deals.

You are provided with your first white coat free in September of the 1st year.

For Anatomy lab you'll need a disecting kit and gloves. You'll also need to purchase scrubs unless you have them already.

No, you do not get the HPSP for podiatry. I've talked to both army and air force. Best you can do is do the National Guard and get some tuition paid for. You won't get 100% (only for state schools) and you also get money for college. Of course, National Guard is different state-to-state, so talk to someone from either your current state or from the state you plan on going to school with, which would be easier for several reasons, one being travel. Reserves might be able to do something as well, but I'm not as familiar with it.

Hey thanks a lot. I am just trying to get an idea of possible expenses besides books and costs of living. Do you really like NYCPM? What are your opinions..advice?

Thanks for the info on the HPSP stuff. I searched the internet for like an hour and couldn't get a yes or no. I didn't want to talk to a recruiter either. I knonw that podiatry is a small field, but they should offer a few openings for the hpsp scholarship for podiatry. They HPSP scholarship is such a good deal, its a shame they don't offer it to podiatry students.
