NYIT (Tuition & Fees = $278,775)

Pros
  • Cheaper because will be living at home
  • Very close family support system
  • Have decent history at competitive speciality matches
  • Already know a few OSM2s to ask for advice
  • My father has connections in the area

Cons
• Family can be distracting at times?

UNTHSC/TCOM (COA = $294,795)

Pros
  • Love being independent
  • In a city (Forth worth)
  • Have other family members in the area (~40 min)

Cons
  • Residency matches seem less competitive? No ophthalmology matches within the past few years
  • Far from family and have to fly to come back home
  • Don’t know anyone currently attending

Summary: I have a week to decide which school to attend as I just got off the waitlist from UNTHSC/TCOM as an OOS applicant. The overall cost is relatively similar over the four years. The UNTHSC/TCOM COA includes personal, living & food, and transportation expenses that are all estimates and I would hope to cut down. As of now I’m currently interested in ophthalmology but also open to change, and likely will want to match back into the northeast. I just have some reservations about living at home with my family after being away at school for four years. Ultimately if anyone has any insight into which school will better to help me achieve this that would be great!

Going to NYIT would give you a strong support system to alleviate stressors like food/housing, connections that can help for competitive specialties, and a geographic advantage to matching to the northeast. I would choose UNTHSC over NYIT if you wanted to match in TX but that's not the case for you. What specific reservations do you have and do you think it outweighs those benefits?
