NYMC c/o 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone, thanks for your help/input. I'm really starting to lean towards NYMC over Drexel. I have to make my decision pretty soon anyways.

I was just wondering, how hard is it/competitive to get to be in NYC for 3rd and 4th years?

Also, with a class of 185 how well do you get to know the profs and is there any small group/problem based learning?

Thanks

Krishna

I dont think it can be that competitive since half the class does it. I do know its by lottery though and based on some point system. Not sure how it works. There are a bunch of different hospitals though that you can do it in the city at. Saint Vicents being the main one I believe.

From the FAQ page to help with ur ?

As a large medical school, what does New York Medical College do to keep the environment personal and supportive?
With 190 students in each class, New York Medical College is considered a large medical school. However, it doesn’t feel that way. All students are assigned to small 20-person units called modules. Many academic activities occur in the module: case conferences, small group discussions, seminars and exam preparation. In addition, because most students live on campus for their first two years, and because there is indeed a campus, there is a strong sense of community within the student body.

hope this helps but keep class size in perspective. I can understand considering it for undergrad b/c some schools are 70,000 people and some a re a few hundred meaning a big difference in experience. But for medical school will there will be a huge difference between a class of 140 (average size) and 185? I dont think so.

There is a thread in pre-allo comparing Drexel to SLU, perhaps some info for you there.

Your name reminds me of krispy kreme donuts...yum.

Anyway I dont know about the whole housing quandy but I doubt being engaged will help as they need a mrriage certificate to let people live together on campus. If you get married and your other half isnt there I doubt they will give you better housing to start off with. Maybe third yr if you decide to do rotations at WMC and live on campus then it would work.

You convinced me to join your b-day bbq, no one deserves to be sober or alone on their birthday, (not even a sox fan if you are one) 👍

Yes, I am a Red Sox fan...poor shil didnt have a good night tonight.

I dont know about the engagement thingy, I'll ask housing about the engaged and living together thing on campus situation. Perhaps a carat or two of ice will pass for a marriage certificate. Who knows with these catholic schools...

Hey guys,

I'm an accepted student from the great state of Washington. I'm pretty sure that I'll be head to NYMC this summer. Quick question for ya'll though, how far along are you guys with the financial aid process?

When you enter your 3rd and 4th year of med school, you can move to NYC and live in the NYMC apartments at 95th St (upper east side of Manhattan). Very nice and affordable apartments in NYC. Unfurnished apartments though. But it's a lottery system and not everyone gets the privilege of living in NYC student housing.

These apartments were sold last year. There is no more NYMC-sponsored housing in NYC.

I was looking around on NYMC's page, but I can't find any information on what computers/ laptops/ software/ etc. they recommend.

Does anyone have any information?
I'm going to be purchasing a laptop within the next few weeks, and I wanted to make sure it will be NYMC compatible.

Thanks!

Any laptop should be compatible, but most people seem to like smaller, more portable ones if they plan to bring them to lecture. Macs have amazing battery life (I am not a mac user myself). Make sure it has internal wireless, since we have wireless all over the Med. Ed. Ctr. and dorms!!! Wireless card (the kind you have to put in and take out) = pain in the @$$.

Hey all, I'll be seeing you in July. Ok, technically August, but saying July makes the end of work seem alot closer. My name's Luke, I'm from the Boston area and went to school at Holy Cross. I'm a Leo who enjoys long walks on the beach at sunset, romantic candle-lit dinners and otolaryngology. I'm planning on living on campus because I dont know the area and I got majorly lost trying to leave after my interview (I drove around in circles for 45 minutes).

My birthday falls in the middle of orientation (8/2). Depending on what's happening for orientation events, I'm thinking that a beer-b-q outside the apartments may be in order, just so that I don't feel so very lonely on my first birthday away from the fam & gf. And by so very lonely, I mean so very sober.

So yeah, about the married student housing preference, does that carry over to engaged students who may have fiance moving in during 3rd year when she finishes law school? Is there a marriage loophole where I could get married, say this summer, in order to get a primo housing slot even though my gf is in at school in Vermont? There has to be some way that I can milk the misery of a long distance relationship for better housing!

YEAH! RED SOX.

As far as the engaged/married things, I do believe you have to be married. I have a friend who had the plans in the works, and had to send them an invitation (ha!) with the date on it and everything. On the other hand, the "better" housing would involve living alone, which might be kinda lonely 🙁.

You could certainly adjust your housing situation when your g/f finishes and moves here and you are married at that point (although the calendar might be kinda tight given when you take your boards, etc.). You can move in between first and second years as well, although many people stay put!

I dont know the answer to the computer question but I think you can get anyone you want.

I am not sure how much of the curriculum is computer based. Can any student elaborate on the use of computers in the curriculum. Are the histo slides on line like at alot of schools now? Are lectures or slides available online? Anything else that makes getting a computer worth it?

Lecture slides are online as are all the images from the histo book. I'm a "book person" so I don't do the computer studying thing, but a number of people do. Might be better to wait a bit, find out what you like, then bite the 1.5K bullet on a laptop that is really perfect for you!

If there are any further questions, feel free to PM me. I will try to check back periodically, but things are crazy right now.

hey guys,

sadly, i'll be declining my nymc seat tomorrow. i was accepted to george washington off the waitlist today, and i've decided that is where i will be this year. best of luck to all you guys. it's been real. 👍

This truly saddens me. That was great NYMC housing for NYC-based students: nice location and affordable. Close to Metropolitan Hospital and close to the subway station.

Is there any subsidized-student housing in NYC anymore? Do any NYC apartment complexes have discount deals with NYMC? If not, this would truly be unfortunate...

Francis Freedman still rents (exclusively, I think) to NYMC students. We are working on developing relationships with realtors in the city and getting a "word of mouth" chain about good landlords going. I have a feeling that by the time I am a third year things will have normalized. Although finding places in the city is requiring a bit more effort these days, people seem to be happy overall.

I just withdrew from NYMC. Good luck to those of you on the waitlist! I know how it feels since I am also on a waitlist at my top choice. I hope my withdrawal helps!

Francis Freedman is located in a nice area of the Upper East Side...82nd street I believe...Very posh area and very affordable living...but it's not located near any subway stations and it's a long walk to Metropolitan Hospital (over 20 blocks). Plus, it's roooms are considerably smaller than the old NYMC student apartments on 95th St. It's a tragedy that the old NYC student housing apartments are now gone 🙁

When I was in med school, they talked about opening new student housing near St. Vincent's Hospital - Manhatten (in the Greenwich Village area). I think it fell through though. But if that ever happened, that would be "da BOMB" 👍

Is anyone else waiting for a decision? I interviewed in February around the 8th? Thanks

Dwight,

I'm suprised you've decided to leave Dunder-Mifflin. You seemed to have a pretty good set up as the Assistant to the Regional Manager. Anyhow, I'm sure you'll bring some great leadership to our class.

Looks like I will be abandoning ship. It was great talking to some of you guys on here and NYMC is an awesome school that I was really happy to be going to. You guys are lucky to be going there, good luck to all of you.

Wow, after reading through all of the posts, i was actually getting so excited to meet you, BOBODR! You seem like a really considerate fellow. i would def want you as a classmate or as a doc 🙂 Best of luck to you and thanks for all the info you gave.

Welp, i just got accepted on May 10 to NYMC, and i'm pretty positive i'm going to NYMC (unless i get off a waitlist at UC Irvine, but even then i'm not sure i'd go there cuz i'm getting attached to NYMC!). CONGRATS to NYMC Class of 2010!

Has there been an email or discussion thread set up by NYMC, or is this student-doctor one the only one? At other schools i was accepted to, they've been talking up a storm already. HMMMM.

Also, i'm living off campus, but i have no idea where the closest areas to NYMC are since i'm from California. i want to live as close as possible to NYMC. Advice please, from NYMC students? Um, also, what does "PM" mean?

thank you!

Welcome 🙂. I got my acceptance pretty late too (last year!). There's no e-mail or discussion thread other than SDN unless something's changed since last year.

As far as living off campus, a lot of people seem to live in Elmsford and Tarrytown. The housing office has a list of contacts, so you should call them and I'm sure they'll mail it to you! Just keep in mind that this area is pretty expensive, and on-campus housing is pretty cheap and easy.

PM means "private message." If you want to "PM" someone just click on their name and click "Send a Private Message."

Yay NYMC 2010!

Accepted 5/15!

I'm waiting on one other waitlist myself, but other than that, I'll be in Valhalla with the rest of ya this August!

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Space-time,

As someone who researched the off campus living very thoroughly since I was going to be doing exactly that, let me offer you what I know or think I know. SOmeone at NYMC correct me if I am wrong.

1) Its very expensive. No hiding that. You will have several options. You cant rent, buy a townhouse, or invest in a co-op. Unless you have a lot of dough (I mean half a million) you wont even be able to consider a house anywhere in Westchester county. Co-ops stink. They have lots of rules, appear cheap but have huge monthly maintenance costs, and you have to be approved by a board to buy one. Not the way to go.

2) Renting a two bedroom comes to about ~1500 a month. Tallyrand is more expensive starting around 1700 a month. You can use craigslist to find some good ones. I would not live in Tallyrand or Elmsfurd apartments but that was my opinon. I read lots and lots of reviews and they were horrible (29% satsifaction rate). I think you would be better off getting an apartment that is a sublet condo or a personal owner situation who is looking to rent out there place. Living on campus in the dorms is about 700 a month so if you get a two bedroom apt for 1500 its not that much more, and at least ur not in a dorm. On campus apartments are more $ but I forget how much.
The nob hill (elmsford apartments MS1 was talking about)

http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/NY-Elmsford-Ridgeview-Apartment-Homes.html

3) Towns to consider. White Plains has some condos for 300,000 if you can swing that. Pretty nice. One place called High Point has very nice condos for a little less than 300,000. I would be wary about buying right now as the housing market is on the downslope. Since you will only hold it for about 4 yrs, it makes it a risky investment in case the housing market doesnt return by then. But being a "suburb" of NYC will keep the housing prices pretty high so value wont crash as much as much as some areas of the US

4) Tarrytown is a 10 minute drive and had some great places. Not to ghetto either. Ossing has alot of cheap rent ...but from someone who lives there is pretty far from the school and not ver nice. Huge Max security prison there and pretty glum.

5) Dont live across the river! The traffic is horrific. A 15 miles drive takes an hour and 15mins some mornings. Due to city traffic & the bridge is sometimes drawn up.

6) Some cheap places in Stamford Connecticut which is a 20 minute drive according to mapquest. Pretty nice town and right next to Grenwich Connecticut.

7)Some people live in Yonkers. But you have to ask urself how far do u want to be from the school? The further you go the more isolated I think you will feel from the rest of ur classmates (90%) who will be living on campus in dorms together.

Thanks a million!!

Yes, you're right, i do NOT want to live far from NYMC. i want to live as close as possible without being on student housing. BTW, i just called the housing office and they said studio apts are all taken up by 4th & 3rd yrs. The housing office also said that the closest areas are Hawthorne or south Valhalla, so i think i'll try that.

So is Tarrytown yay or nay? You have it as both good and bad in your list 🙂

Thanks again for all your help!

Tarrytown is not Tallyrand if thats where the confusion lies 😀 . Tallyrand is the specific apartment complex. Tarrytown is the town next to Valhalla that has more affordable housing than valhalla. I gave the links to Tallyrand. YOu can do a google search for Elmsfurd Apartments but I gave the review page which wasnt favorable. Best thing would be to find a current student who lives in one of those complexes and get their opinion.

EDIT: Sorry I saw where I mixed the words myself and corrected it in the original post. 😳

Hey guys,
so apparently I'll be attending nymc for sure. my girl friend and I are thinking about living together somewhere between nymc and nyc (she works on wall street). is it possible? if yes, are there any suggestions? any insight would be great. thanks a bunch and I'll see you all in august.

For any M1's out there, how isolated would you feel living off campus at NYMC? I have been out of school for a few years, and the thought of moving back into a dorm is slightly painful, on the other hand the savings for living in a dorm for 2 years seems like it would be the smart choice. Trying to get some help making that decision.

Also quick question regarding clinical exposure. As part of the clinical preceptorship, how often do you end up in a doctors office? I'm mainly trying to determine the amount of clinical exposure in the first year, as I think its important to keep everything in perspective in the midst of hard work.

Thanks.

You would probably want to live around Yonkers which is 25 minutes to NYMC and very close to the city. You might be able to even commute from there during third yr if u want to do rotations in the city at St. Vincents or another hospital without it being too bad.

If you want to live in white plains (right next to valhalla) it wouldnt be too bad for ur gf since the express train only takes 40 minutes from there to manhattan. An overall hour commute into the city is not as bad as many people have it.

Thanks for the quick response. 🙂
The main concern is that my gf won't be having a car. So going to work for her will mostly take place by public transportation. Since she might have long hours too at work, I would rather live closer to the city than to nymc. I don't mind driving 30 mins-45 mins to go to class everyday.
I'm just not sure which part of the area will be more convenient for the both of us to get to places. ><

Ummm...maybe Riverdale? Parking is not as big a problem as it is in other parts of the city, and Riverdale is a very nice neighborhood for the Bronx.

I think it's lik 25 mins to NYMC from that neighborhood, although that depends on traffic.

I have been accepted into NYMC too. I want to go but it's so expensive, especially compared to my state school that I got in to (like 20 thousand more a year). How do you go about bargaining with the Dean (if that's even possible/plausible)?

It would be pretty ballsy to request a tuition deduction in your letter accepting admission.

If you really really really want to go to NYMC, you could carefully compose a letter that expresses that you would prefer to attend NYMC over your state school for x,y and z however that the extra 20k is the only stumbling block in your decision process. I have a feeling that you'd get a big FU from the financial aid dept based on the fact that there are 184 other students that will be paying the full tuition and a whole waitlist full of people that would give a limb or two to go to NYMC.

Seriously though, weigh the options: Is your state school, at $80K less overall, going to give you clinical rotations in NYC, consistently above average Step1 scores and a phenomenal match list? Is the 80 grand + ~6% interest worth that opportunity? Personally, my state school has a very good match list and puts out excellent clinicians, so I'd choose them over NYMC...but that's not an option unless they pull me off the WL.

I was looking into that area too actually. But I have one more question, is it very odd in new york to "rent" furniture? Cause I know it's pretty common at other places and there are such companies that allow ppl to rent furniture on a monthly basis. I don't know whether this is an option in NYC or whether it's even possible.

Got the acceptance email today!

Thanks to everyone for their help and support! 😀

I just got in today too, and I'm looking to live off-campus, anyone looking for a roommate to go in on a place PM me! (me=23 y.o.male easy going cool clean lots of good music and DVDs and a big screen TV I might try to haul to NY...)

Hey everyone!

I just got in today too! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!! 😀 So now I have to choose between Drexel and NYMC. So any suggestions on deciding where?
Here are some good things about NYMC that i liked over Drexel:
- The campus was awesome, especially the anatomy lab (Drexel's anatomy lab was in the basement, kind of freaked me out)
- NYMC's miniboards and their high board scores
- NYMC's match list (I can't find Drexel's)

Drexel has some good points too:
- Two awesome medical programs ( I got accepted to the PIL program)
- Good board scores and passing rates

So any comments?

Oh, does NYMC have a calendar or a schedule? I'm leaving my family and girlfriend in California either school i go to, and would like to know when I could fly back. 🙄 And how about summer break for NYMC, do we do internships or are we free to do whatever we want?

At my state school, there are no clinical rotations in NYC and I'm not sure about the Step 1 board scores, but they have a good match list and great clinical rotations (in Memphis though). My state school does put out great clinicians and it really isn't bad, but I still want to go to NYMC for the rotation in NYC. The only thing is the price! Like, if it were a little cheaper, it would be a done-deal but 80K is a lot of money. Has anyone heard of people "bargaining" about the price of the school when they have better offers? I know this one guy who is going to Vandy for free just by emailing the Dean!

NYMC has a great pass rate too! 99%+ last year.

Here is our calendar for this year: http://www.nymc.edu/Medical/calendar/first_year_academic_cal.pdf

They won't publish this year's for a little bit, I'm guess, but that should give you an idea!

As far as summer, you are free to do whatever you want to do, but paid summer internships are available at our affiliated hospitals.

I'm really happy at NYMC, although first year is pretty intense. I'd rather work hard now and know that I"m prepared for the boards rather than chill now and stress (well, I'll still stress) when the boards come around.

I think your decision between Drexel and NYMC will come down to your learning style. Drexel is a lot of PBL and small group (although one girl who posted on SDN said her "group" would be 60 people, whereas our small groups are 20 when we have them!) . NYMC is still a very traditional curriculum with a lot of lectures - although the feedback on our curriculum and our graduates is excellent (which is reflected in the match list). I really love the scribe service and couldn't live without it since I am pretty selective about the lectures I attend. I like that we don't have that much attendance-mandatory stuff as I can really plan my day according to how I feel 🙂.

Good luck making your decision!

Oh, does NYMC have a calendar or a schedule? I'm leaving my family and girlfriend in California either school i go to, and would like to know when I could fly back. 🙄 And how about summer break for NYMC, do we do internships or are we free to do whatever we want?

I'd say NYMC. Definitely! Not saying Drexel's bad but doing rotations in NYC would put me over.

Jee gosh, thanks for the heads up. How is life there at NYMC, living in the dorms and all. Is it the whole undergrad experience all over again? 😱 what if my dorm mates are :scared:

I was looking into that area too actually. But I have one more question, is it very odd in new york to "rent" furniture? Cause I know it's pretty common at other places and there are such companies that allow ppl to rent furniture on a monthly basis. I don't know whether this is an option in NYC or whether it's even possible.

Hey,
I just got accepted to NYMC as well, and though i would jump right in. As far as the location goes. Riverdale is nice, however for your girlfriends sake you probubly want to be right near broadway. as long as you are she can take the one train all the way down (its aobut an hours ride, but its not so bad, she will have a seat). the other side of broadway (surrounding van courtland park) is nice and getting better ( i lived in the area for a while when i was younger- often referred to as the north bronx, van courtanld south or by the street names (240ish to 225ish)). the problem with other parts of riverdale is that its a pain to get to the subway. White plains is not too bad if you live near the metro north stop (and there are a lot of apartments close by) other than that, its hell without a car.

As far as furniture goes. a lot of people go the ikea route as well as craigslist. I have gotten some really good furniture on that site for really cheap and sometimes even for free. I know it sounds sketchy, but its widely used and you just have to use common sense.
hope that helps. good luck!
