Jee gosh, thanks for the heads up. How is life there at NYMC, living in the dorms and all. Is it the whole undergrad experience all over again? 😱 what if my dorm mates are :scared:

Haha, I'm sorry, I hope I didn't say anything too scary. Living on campus is a little college-y, but you make friends who fit with you and it's all good 🙂. Most roommate groups seem to have worked out pretty well. If you are really worried you can try requesting the unfurnished apartments (that way there are fewer people per apartment) or you can live off campus ($$$, unfortunately!).

Thanks! Good luck to you at GW as well!!

Hey,
I just got accepted to NYMC as well, and though i would jump right in. As far as the location goes. Riverdale is nice, however for your girlfriends sake you probubly want to be right near broadway. as long as you are she can take the one train all the way down (its aobut an hours ride, but its not so bad, she will have a seat). the other side of broadway (surrounding van courtland park) is nice and getting better ( i lived in the area for a while when i was younger- often referred to as the north bronx, van courtanld south or by the street names (240ish to 225ish)). the problem with other parts of riverdale is that its a pain to get to the subway. White plains is not too bad if you live near the metro north stop (and there are a lot of apartments close by) other than that, its hell without a car.

As far as furniture goes. a lot of people go the ikea route as well as craigslist. I have gotten some really good furniture on that site for really cheap and sometimes even for free. I know it sounds sketchy, but its widely used and you just have to use common sense.
hope that helps. good luck!

awesome information. thanks. 🙂
however, after careful thought and discussion, I'll probably still stay on campus for a while due to the cost living off campus. 🙁
btw, does anyone know how on campus housing works? like how long am I commited if I chose to stay on campus? do I renew my "lease" every year or semester? can I change my mind after a semester?
most importantly, cause I"m actually abroad now, I"m so scared that my letters won't be forwarded properly to my current address. has anyone recieved any information about housing/financial aid/orientation packet from nymc yet?

From what I remember, we'll be getting financial aid packages the first or so week of June, followed by housing surveys and orientation stuff mid-june. As far as the on campus housing goes, I think you're "committed" for the year because you'll only have the on-campus fincial aid package. But then again, if they deduct the housing money when they disburse your funds at the begining of the semester, I dont see why you couldnt move off campus over winter break before your funds go out. There's probably a way to do it, but you'll undoubtedly have to jump through administrative hoops.

Take a look around the housing website and you might find something more out than I did.

Just to clarify, your lease first year is for 11 months: from August through June, I believe. If you choose to renew, you stay in the apartment for July, too, obviously. If you move off campus you are supposed to be out by the end of June. I doubt they would be very accomodating if you wanted to move out midway through the year, but you could always try subletting to a 3rd or 4th year who was rotating (no guarantees, though).

Hey guys,

I was wondering how does financial aid look for you guys? I didn't get my packet yet, but I'm hoping it'll be good. :scared:

Packages for first years aren't sent out until the 6th of June (according to the website). I didnt put down parental information so mine will be Stafford + private loans

I'm another member of the Class of 2010 who is so looking forward to starting (you guys all sound great and friendly!). Just a little info about me... my name is Matt and I went to Yale undergrad and have been working at a hospital in NYC for the past year.

So is the June 6th deadline the time we have to get in our parents information, or is it sooner? My mom hadn't filed yet and so I rushed her to get them done when I found out institutional funds are dependent on her return.

Thanks for your help.

Hey I talked to my pre-med advisor today, she said something about a full ride for the top 5%? Whoa, is this true? Gah...that would be sweet but then the competiton goes off the roof nah? 😱

Anyways, I'm still deciding between here and drexel. I think I won't decide until i go for a second look in june. Anyone around the 11th to the 14th? I'm coming over from California...so if you want anything from california holla..

I would send out the FAFSA info as soon as possible! They will send out the financial aid packages as they are completed after June 6th

If you're from the SD area bring me a burrito...🙂

whoa... I never heard of that before. Now I'm curious, too. Is it true??

Ya know, I met someone at my hospital who was offered a full ride at NYMC and almost went there... completely merit based from what I could tell (smart guy) so this could be true. In fact he loved the school and told me it was the hardest choice to pick the other school over it.

Have all the people that got acceptance emails monday, may 22 gotten their packages in their mail? I still haven't and it's saturday. I hope it's not lost....i emailed admissions on friday, but haven't gotten a response yet.

i received the financial aid and mph emails tho....

anyway, for those of u that did receive information in the mail, what is the deadline for sending back your confirmation???? I was reading a post from last year's class that said it was 7 days and am starting to worry since i dont' even have the acceptance form to send back

I just got mine today and I am in the bronx. So I wouldnt worry, but I would call them tuesday morning to say that you havnt gotten it, so that they might be getting your response later then they expect. I was told that I had a week to accept.
hope that helps.

I got mine on Friday. There is a ONE week deadline, but I am pretty sure they wont take your acceptance away if you didnt get it. =) Call them...yep yep.

BTW- hilarious video ^_^

Question for any of the current NYMC students. How is the curriculum at NYMC, having it be the "traditional" allopathic lessons and also how does the Catholic background affect the school? And in terms of financial aid, is most of the financial aid loans and how would my debt be if i took out loans all four years, like over 200k im guess? Okay that's it for now. Thanks.

Ed :luck:

so I have a question for current nymc students too. how useful is havinga tablet pc at nymc lectures? I know there's a thread out there discussing the pros and cons of having a tablet pc over a nomal laptop, but I thought the advatages might differ from school to school. So does having tablet pcs really help in lectures at nymc?

Hey for those of you who have filled out financial aid. So we have to turn in our credit reports, by using myFico.com. I was wondering if we had to buy the $44.85 packet, or is there another way to get it? 😕

i had to buy it. I know it sucks but i figured that's what everyone else does so oh well...

In response to tablet pc's. I dont think it really matters. I have a laptop. basically what most kids do before lecture is print out the slides (they're available before class), and then take notes on those. A few kids bring their laptops in and take notes during class to. Also remember, you get verbatim transcripts of the lecture, so I *personally* dont think it's worth it, but there are kids who do have them and use them. I guess its a personal choice. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

About the financial aid, I know last year we had to purchase it, but I believe there is a free one online now, you should call financial aid and ask to talk to Tony Sozzo, he'll help you out.

I used freecreditreport.com and I think the package was something like 30 bucks. But you'd figure that for the 60k/year they'll get out of us they could do the credit report legwork for us...

I used myfico.com but I used the discount code CPPSAVINGS for 20% off the $44.85.

Hi Everyone,

Looking forward to meeting you in a few months.

For the credit scores, you can request each of your credit reports once per year for free:

www.annualcreditreport.com/

When you request the free credit report, the individual credit agencies have an option to add on your credit score. With TransUnion you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of the credit watch and get it for free (just make sure to cancel). Experian and Equifax are around $6 or $8 to add it on. So I didn't pay more than $15 to get all three. Hope this helps! 😳

2 months to registration! Put on your party pants...

Anyone else in the "what the hell did I just get myself into?" frame of mind?

thank you for changing the subject from credit checks...i was starting to get depressed...

two months until dr. netter becomes our best friend...cant wait.

i know that the on-campus apts are furnished, but how furnished are they? beds? AC??

are we gonna go out during "orientation" and have a couple drinks? I heard there are a couple bars in new rochelle, but not sure...a little class of 2010 outing may be in order...

Yay Frank (Netter, that is)!

The on-campus apartments have furniture, but no A/C. They do have window sleeves. DO NOT buy an A/C from the on-campus vendor - huge rip off!! Rather, arrive at school, measure your the sleeve, grab your roommate and go sign up at Sam's Club RIGHT THEN (two cards per membership - it's the same deal they'll give at the orientation sign-up) and buy your A/Cs there. Stick in a little padding and it'll all fit fine!!

As for bars - New Rochelle is a bit of a hike from Valhalla, but White Plains is close (generally a $15.00 cab ride that you can split with 3 others) and has some good bars. We had an open bar at the Thirsty Turtle and a dinner cruise around Manhattan, not to mention impromptu get-togethers most nights on campus.

Yah just a little bit of helpful info. The orientation (which ill be part of the staff) is the best time you'll have all year. I'm pretty sure I drank everynight and went out, but you dont have to do that if its not your scene, there a lot going on. Also, dont buy anything form the school specifically, its all overpriced, when you get here a lot of students are selling stuff (my roomate got an AC for 10 bux and a tv for 15.) If you have nay personal questions baout the school feel free to ask, im sure me or ms1 will be bale to answer them.

Thirsty Turtle is the best name for a bar that I've heard in a long time

Here's a useful question:

When do most first years move onto campus? Is there a way to get on campus like the weekend before registration? It'd be cool to have my family help me move in on a sunday instead of having to orchestrate the use of 3 people's vacation days and then driving the 3+ hours from Worcester to Valhalla on a work day.

Are you from Worcester?

I'm living there right now and grew up about 20 minutes south of Wartown. It's good to know that central mass will be represented in Valhalla!

I lost my waitlist letter, and do not remember how I am supposed to reply to NYMC to remain on it. Can someone post the information that NYMC needs? Who it needs to be sent to etc? Thanks

ps I posted in the pre-allopathic section

Cool, I grew up in Uxbridge, went to St. John's in Shrewsbury and Providence College.

Hey, I grew up in Rhode Island and went to Providence College too (class of 2004). I live in Boston right now with my fiancee, and we are planning the move to Yankee territory. What year did you graduate?

Sounds like there will be some fellow sox fans at NYMC! We should go front at some games at Yankee stadium!

I can't wait to meet you guys! I'm from Denver but I went to Cornell for ugrad some I'm somewhat familiar with NYC, tho Cornell is in Ithaca we made it down from time to time. Def drinks during orientation, and I'm all about the booz cruise around manhattan...

I'm also curious, when can people start to move into campus apts? I guess they send us housing info sometime soon? Anyone interested in living off-campus? I can't decide... dorm-style living is kinda a turn-off but I don't know the area and it would prob make meeting people easier

Graduated in 2003.

My fiancee and I are making the move down there too. We're going to be living with her mom in Stamford. May not be the best arrangements, but she's not charging anything. Free room!!! I'll save money anyway I can.

i hear ya about "dorm style"...im sure im not alone as someone who has lived on their own for at least a couple of years, but at least there are kitchens and bathrooms in each apt and its not an actual dorm. i think i am gonna sack up and go on-campus for at least the first year...it will be a good way to meet people too i think, walk to class, etc. ...and they have balconies for bbq. 👍

Count me in as another Red Sox Fan! 🙂 I am originally from CA but I am currently living in Worcester (and have been for the past four years)...that's funny that there are at least three of us on here who currently living in Worcester. As of right now I'll be joining all of you on July 31 and I can't wait to meet everyone! Does anyone know if all of the unfurnished on-campus apartments are already taken? I really don't want to have to put all of my stuff in storage (for at least the next year) but it sounds like it is a lot cheaper to live on-campus vs off.

Orientation week sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun! 😀

Ok, yeah for Red Sox fans and yay for my home state!! Whoever said they went to St. John's Shrewsbury - I went to Fenwick and we didn't play you in many sports but we did swim you guys!!

They will let you guys move into on-campus housing the Saturday before orientation (typically - don't quote me on that) so you won't have to fight weekday traffic.

I was going to let it go, but I just couldnt keep my mouth shut...

I am not exactly fond of nymc's scribe service. Most classes like to scribe their lectures verbatim. Which means word for word. Some of you may think that's GREAT, you dont even have to go to class anymore. You can just sit there and read scribes everyday. WRONG. Esp for anat, and histo, later on for neuro. These classes are very visually oriented, you have to see the pictures to know what your profs are talking about. That being said, deps on who does the scribe, the quality can vary. Why did i bring that point up? because at least a few years ago, i know for a fact that drexel STREAM their lectures. Which means you can actually sit at home in your pj's and be in class. The lectures are also kept online so you can watch it anytime. i dont know if that's still the case. But if you're a audio-visual learner, then you should DEFINITELY consider that point.

anyway. that's it for today. any question, please pm me.

i heard drexel streams their lectures because they don't have enough room in their lecture hall for all their students???

I'm pretty sure that most of the unfurnished apts tend to go to the upperclassmen/married people first.

why cant NYMC have downloadable lectures as well? cant you just set up a camera and post the movie on a website or ftp?

They are not downloadable for copyright info for their research. This has been brought to the attention of the student senate and is currently being discussed, so hopefully that will be changed in the future, although there is no guarantees. On the other hand, if you have a problem with scribes, you should go to class. I personally rarely go to class (never went in undergrad either) and have no problem using the scribes. Not only do you get access to your scribes, but you have access the the prior years scribes incase your scriber did not do a good job. Obviously there are somethings that are hard to understand, but for the most part you can get by.

Housing info came out today (email) and the physical/immunization forms came snail mail yesterday! They said we can move in the weekend before registration (Jul 29 and 30)...I'm all of a sudden getting a bit more excited...🙂
