NYMC probation status

Does anyone know why the program is on probation?

Any info about the program in general? Clinic heavy? Research heavy? Crazy call schedule?

I was told at my interview that they didn't have enough attending coverage at their sites. They weren't afraid to talk about it on interview day, but they did not mention specific incidents and so I wasn't exactly sure if something really bad happened. Everyone was nice there, but it sounds like they had some issues. Residents had to meet with ACGME representatives to report if appropriate changes were made. I'm not sure if it was "wrong place, wrong time" or if the attending coverage/supervision was actually that bad... Seems like they are on the way to fixing it, but that they are "in the middle of it". That was my impression, so don't take it as the final word.

Attending coverage is bad at a lot of ophtho programs. The top programs have fellows doing the call coverage, which is better because at least there's someone. Unfortunately it's the nature of ophtho training, especially at many programs on the east coast because hospitals provide absolutely no incentive for ophtho attendings to work there.

Dusn, I heard that as well about many programs... so I was thinking maybe they had a case of "wrong place, wrong time" and the ACGME caught them with poor attending coverage. Whether or not it's more than that and residents feel like they are missing something is a different story. I'm not sure, I did feel like something was "off" on my interview day, like residents might have been displeased, but I don't know details.
