NYMC vs SUNY UPstate Need advice!!!

Hi

I am having hard time deciding over the two. I want to stay close so NYMC is good but loved everyone at Upstate.

I will get a second look at upstate.

Please provide info/advice you have and or any website I can look at.

NYMC fin aid process is very loooooong and no help.

Any advice opinion would be appreciated Thank you

looks like NYMC is having money issues at the moment. i would go with Upstate if you really like it there.

Though i haven't visited NYMC i think this is a really easy choice....upstate all the way....it has a better reputation, higher average stats for admitted students, everyone is so absurdly nice, and it's cheaper!

Upstate. With the talks about merging with Touro going on, you have no way of knowing whether the NYMC you attend will be the same as the one you interviewed at.

wow...all the post are votes for upstate...my vote is UPSTATE also..cheaper, plus the students are not gunners like NYMC...i have a few friends at NYMC..and its the med school with the most gunners. haha

Hi guys,

wow i had exactly the same question NYMC vs. Upstate...I have been accepted to both and can't decide which one to go to. Upstate's tuition is definitely great (i am NY resident)...NYMC campus and location is perfect (being so close to my home)....I was wondering if anyone knows how well Suny Upstate prepares its students for Step 1?
After going for a second look day to NYMC, a lot of current students commented on how prepared they felt for step 1 because of mini boards, they said that most of them don't take Kaplan to prepare and that 6 weeks is enough to study before taking the test.
Does anyone have info on how prepared students feel for step 1 at Upstate?

It's potentially merging with Touro College, an undergraduate university which has DO schools (not the same thing). UMDJ and MSU are other examples of university systems with both MD and DO schools.

I'm a 4th year graduating from NYMC. I've really liked being at NYMC and feel that it's prepared me well for the boards, clinical rotations and now for internship. I definitely feel that no one school offers a better, more varied set of clinical rotations. However, NYMC is really expensive. If all things were equal, I'd go with NYMC. All things aren't equal since there is a significant cost difference (especially for whomever said they were in state). There are lots of great loan repayment plans, but I have to admit that my favorite loan repayment plan would be to not accrue the debt in the first place. For whomever said they felt they wanted to be close to the family, I think that's a valid reason for some people to pay more tuition and increased living expenses. Just take a look at what NYMC vs. Upstate is going to cost you (factoring in living expenses) and see if you are willing to pay that price. It may not matter to you at all, but you owe it to yourself to make an informed decision.

I knew Upstate was going to be the favorite. I would say Upstate too. We could be each other's notekaters when we can't make it class when we start in August.😀 Can't wait to start already.

NYMC is merging with Touro (notorious for being a diploma mill). And Touro is popping out osteopathic schools in half a dozen states. It's a bit like merging with DeVry or University of Phoenix. Scary thought.

Touro has three DO schools (since when is that half a dozen?)."Popping out" is not an appropriate description considering the massive projected physician shortage.

Touro discovered that a handful of employees were selling diplomas and turned them in to police. Hardly a diploma mill. Touro isn't perfect. It has expanded rapidly, and there are growing pains. However, to smear an not-for-profit institution that has run 2 accredited DO schools for nearly 10 years, without major problems - that's ignorant. This would not be the first time that an MD and a DO school fall under the same umbrella.

If you really have a 38 MCAT, shame on you for your lack of research skills, inability to count, and ignorance towards 1/5 of all graduating med students.

There are reasons for and against the merger. Yours are the shallow, idiotic ones.

You know I don't know much about this merger everyone is citing as their reasons but merger or no merger, financial problems or none, i think the OP should go to SUNY Upstate for its cheaper tuition, more laid back atmosphere that they've described it to have, and other such factors. I got a good feeling about that school when I applied this past year.

Yeah, sorry to hijack the thread. But some of the crap being spewed (often overblown or outright untrue) about NYMC, the potential partnership with Touro, and DO schools in general is ridiculous.

I heard great things about Upstate (personally I think all the MD schools are great in their own way). Obviously the OP should go where he/she will be happiest, taking into consideration the difference in tuition (which may affect happiness when payment is due).

Honestly, I don't think these threads are particularly useful when it comes to comparing MD schools. Your opportunities will be pretty much identical at all of them. Lifestyle choice is something only you can answer (I, for one, would not like city life). How much the tuition difference matters is again your call.
