Hi all! Seeking help in making a decision for what school to attend. I have been very fortunate to have these options but want to make sure I'm making the right decision. Up until this point I was pretty set on Jacobs but got of the waitlist for NYMC with a scholarship. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! My deadline is early tomorrow AM, May 22nd so definitely on a bit of a time crunch. Below are the pros / cons - of note, as of now I am not exclusively interested in a particular specialty.

  • Jacobs School of Medicine at UBuff:
    • Pros:
      • Faculty / students were very nice and approachable
      • Felt a great sense of support from their second look event
      • Good research and clinical opportunities
      • P/F grading system
      • Hospitals are fairly close to the campus and could get away with not getting a car for the first couple of years
    • Cons
      • Further from my support system who are in NYC (6+ hours away though the flight is about an hour)
      • More expensive vs. NYMC (~$78 K)
      • Not really a con but I'm interested in a dual MD / MPH degree which will require 5 years of school (vs. 4 years at NYMC)
  • NYMC
    • Pros:
      • Closer to my support system in NYC
      • Cheaper cost of attendance with scholarship (~$60 K)
      • Potential to do rotations in NYC where as of now I'm looking to match (though keeping an open mind)
      • 4-year dual MD / MPH program
      • Seems to have good clinical opportunities
    • Cons
      • Have not had the chance to visit the campus / did not get to attend admitted students day
      • P / F but there is ranking that appears on applications
      • May likely need a car in Valhalla given it is quite suburban (but if there are any NYMC students that think the opposite, please lmk!)

I seriously don't see how this is a question. Your support system is in NYC, it'll be cheaper to go to NYMC, and the MD/MPH program you're interested in will take an extra year at Buffalo? I feel like NYMC is the clear winner.

I was accepted at NYMC and ultimately dropped it for another school, but I was very impressed with the school when I visited. It is P/F but you are ranked into quartiles which isn't the worst I guess. I will say that from all the second looks I attended, the NYMC students seemed to be the happiest by far

Hahaha it does seem like an easy answer. To be honest it was the uncertainty of it all because I had not actually visited NYMC or had the chance to talk to a good amount of students there like I'd had the opportunity to with UBuff. Appreciate your insights!!
