ppl who go to NYU, what is the truth behind this rumor that NYU drops out a certain percentage of its class after a semester or so?

The rule of thumb used to be the bottom 15% would be dropped even if you didn't fail any classes. You would think you are in good position and then one day security would grab you like a vilian out of lecture, call you a failure in front of everyone, and carry you out kicking and screaming.

Well this year they changed it. Taxes have gone up, energy cost are out of control, and faculty want better benefits. So this year if you have less than a 2.8 gpa they will kick you out. I heard they want to kick out atleast 137 students from the class of 2009 and then replace them with higher paying international students.

Its darwinism at its best and only the strong survive.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, in all honesty it is harder than hell to get kicked out and you really have to work at it. Just study and you will be fine. All you have to do is make all C's.

This rumor is offically dead and only floats around because this site has the search function and it pops up from years and years ago when the school was in transition of its new ciriculum.

I just wanted to add something. I know this has been discussed a lot and NYU students say that there's no mandatory failing-out to meet some sort of quota, but I work for a dental office now whose dentist graduated from NYU a few years ago (maybe 3...?). He said that a higher proportion of students fail out of NYU than other schools, and he indeed attributed it to them having so many people in the class...he said it casually without my having asked. (I think we were talking about relative class size).

Of course, I can see how such a statistic could get skewed, and I didn't apply to NYU, so I'm offering no extensive research results or anything....for all I know, the proportion is the same as other schools, there's just a lot more people. I'm JUST going by what he said, and he did seem to think that they "expect" quite a few students to not graduate.

Is he just fulla crap?

So far the only people that dropped out of my class were either totally capable of doing well, but decided going out all the time and putting school off til the last minute or students who just freak out so much and don't understand how to really study efficiently. On a side note, the first year is not bad at all. I think my undergrad was worse.

It isnt true. Having been thru my first year, and almost thru my second, I am well aware of the people who have left the program.

The past few years have really changed in terms of the types of students attending NYU. There is a newer dean who is trying to turn things upside down and shake things up. They are offering a lot more full rides than before, and are getting TONS more applicants and a "higher quality" student enrollment every year. Even the AP students this year had an average of 97 percentile on the NDBE part I. Competition is tough, and they want to keep everyone in. As long as you work at it, they will help you to make it thru. If you are a total ******* and dont put in an effort, they will give you the boot so fast you wont know what happened. The program is hard. They haver really "stepped it up."

My first year, we were assigned a "Mentor" within the college. Mine was one of the assistant deans, so I got to hear the good and the bad of it. So consider this info First Hand.

Hope this helps!!

why do people worry so much? If you can fail out of NYU, chances are, you can fail out of any other school. Think of it as a motivation to do well. You chose dentistry as your career...do you really want a student who fails courses in dental school as your dentist? hell no!

... Yeah! And did you know that if you become a dentist you're going to commit suicide? It's practically guaranteed.
