just got back from spring break! i've been trying to catch up on lots of nyu threads and it seems like the common theme is attrition rate.
let me tell you, if that's the main thing that is bothering you or other posters, then you're worrying about nothing. i'm a firm believer that nyu does not "try to kick students out". i have no idea why people believe that. at first, in the beginning of the year, i wasn't so sure, but now as the 1st year is winding down i can safely say that nyu DOES NOT try to weed people out.
here are the rules for failing here: you are "allowed" to fail 2 classes. failing a class means that you are below a 70%. (keep in mind that this 70% is AFTER the class curve, which is huge here for most of the classes). if you do, indeed fail, then you make it up the coming summer....tuition included but housing is not included. remember, you can only do it twice. the 3rd time, you do get tossed out.
so how hard is it to fail? i personally think if you study hard, you won't get thrown out. in my opinion, the people who drop out academically, truly derserve to get kicked out. yes, it's possible to study hard and fail a course (lots of people DO some sort of remedial work at one point or another here). all my close friends here have not come close to failing a course. *knock on wood* i was just an average student coming in (19/19 DATs, but low science GPA) and I'm doing well in my classes. i personally only know 3 or 4 people that have dropped out or gotten "weeded" out....and 2 of those was for academic reasons. the others dropped out b/c dentistry wasn't for them or other similar reasons (financial). honestly i don't think 50 will drop out like i've read here on sdn. i would say currently maybe 10 have dropped out give or take 3-5....i really don't notice since it's not that significant of a decrease. who knows, maybe more will drop out after this semester which is likely considering we had anatomy and are taking physio.
personally, i've slacked off considerably this semester. yet, i'm still getting mostly B's w/ some A's tossed in there. just remember to ride the curve!
