Can anyone comment on how well NYU will teach you clinically? Are there enough chairs for all 360 of you to finish all of your requirements and even get more practice if you wanted to? Do you plan on going into residency or moving out of state to start working immediately? How confident are you in your abilities as a clinician at NYU?

you will get such a wide scope of procedures, it's pretty insane. yes there are enough chairs. if there aren't enough chairs u go up to another floor and get a chair. moral of the story: you always get a chair. yes you get all of your requirements..i've gotten so many of mine done and im barely halfway through my 3rd year.

residency is always recommended these days, so yes. i'm confident in my abilities, but i'm a student so i'm always learning new things every day

Thank you for your replies to both of my posts. I am considering NYU because of personal issues. My parents are against me going to Maryland for various reasons that I do not agree with. They tend to be stubborn and refuse to listen to whatever I tell them. They believe NYU has a superior name which is useless if I plan to do general dentistry, better education which may be true clinically, that the difference in debt is no big deal and that I can make it back quickly anyway, that Manhattan is safer than Baltimore (this is true I believe), and that they also want me closer to home (I live in NJ). So my hands are tied atm hahah.

Sorry guys I for disturbing your dental chit chat but on buzzfeed they said dentist use outdated techniques. Is this true?

As difficult as it may seem, go with what you want. My family was hinting towards me going to NYU, but I ultimately couldn't do the commute and couldn't stomach the cost difference with UB. This is your life, your decision. They simply want you to be close to home, which is understandable. Telling my family that I would make a monthly trip home helped calm their nervousness.

Can I get a fast answer please.

Making your own thread might help you more. I am a pre-dent. IMO the techniques older dentists use are still great and get the job done. I dont think too much has changed

Yeah my mother is more worried about not seeing me. My father is more worried about not getting a good job because he never heard of Maryland Dental. That is only because NJ is swarming with NYU dental grads. (my parents are dental technicians)

That's really scary. Get rid of dentist!
Just kidding.

My parents think the same way. Unfortunately, most of their opinions are based off of what someone they hold in high regard once said. Their opinions are unchangeable from that point. You need to learn to think on your own.

My mind is made up. It would just make me feel better if my parents supported my decision lol

Maybe I'm biased, but I've never heard that NYU has a better reputation than Maryland. After all, Maryland was the first dental school in the world, and has facilities that are second to none

It is a cultural thing. Asians generally think that NYU is amazing because it is well known compared to Maryland. I don't quite understand it either. Regardless they will not listen to my logic.

The idea that NYU is so great is also amplified by the fact that almost all of the dentists my parents work for are from NYU. I tell them its because they graduate 360 dentists a year and they spill into NJ, but they still believe that I will be able to find a better job if I got an education at NYU. Combined with Manhattan being a lot safer than Baltimore and NYC being a train ride away from home, my parents will not budge.

They'll get around to it. My whole family fell in love with UB and even Buffalo when they came for the white coat ceremony. They were really happy with my choice. They definitely liked that I was literally across the street from the campus, compared to taking the subway to NYU.

NYU has had a tarnished reputation from the past, and faculty will acknowledge it. however, with our new dean in 07-08 brought great changes, more funding, more faculty, and some drastic changes.

bottom line, you can't go wrong with either school. i will say for NYU though, is that you will receive an extremely diverse patient pool and you will get a great deal of experience. not to mention, clinical experience begins fairly early as well

NYU gets a bad rep. these days because of 1. that stupid rumor about people getting kicked out and 2. the price. 1 is definitely not true, and 2...well yeah it's pretty expensive, there's no doubt about that.

I would love to go to either school. The price is the only thing that turns me off for NYU. Knowing that it will make my future finances harder to manage, it makes choosing NYU difficult. But my parents said they would support me financially a bit (though I am not sure how much they can actually help me out with)

if it becomes negligible then i'd pick NYU. if not, maryland...especially if you can get in state tuition

At the end of the day you need to be happy because you are the one spending the next four years of your life at that school, not your parents. They're just trying to look out for you but parents don't always know what's best! If your heart is really telling you Maryland and you go to NYU, it's going to be so much harder for you to be happy just because you're entering school there with a little resentment. Just my two sense but I would go ahead and go where you want, your parents will eventually support you because they love you and because you will still be a great dentist.

PS I'm from Maryland and live right outside of Baltimore (my sister and friends actually live in Baltimore) and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Just avoid the bad areas, which really aren't near the school anyways and you have nothing to worry about.
