Hi!

If anyone has any info/insight on the perio programs at TUFTS or COLUMBIA please share. I can tell you something about NYU:

Pros
-Everyone (professors, director, residents) is super friendly and gets along well, so nice atmosphere, not cut-throat at all.
-Super facilities.
-The program is extremely practical, they throw you right in there. Residents place about 50 implants per year. One person I talked to reported 7 sinus lifts in his first 2 years.
-big 'referral base': 700 undergrad dentists seeing patients per day and looking for cases. The residents say that columbia gets lesser number of cases and less complicated cases in general because of the population base
-Hours are good with apparently lots of free time (pro or con?). I guess you could moonlight.

Cons
-Most residents complain about not having enough 'didactics' and your first procedure could be an implant! But this could be good, depends how you look at it....NYU generally has this 'be a man' attitude in teaching.
-the 'international' program seems to be annoying but doesn't really seem to interfere. Its 2 separate tracks
-The amount of research you do is really up to you (could be a pro). However, I don't think NYU offers the option of a Masters.
-Another downside is that Tarnow has left and gone to Columbia. Don't know however how much he participates in the perio program there. Would love to know this.

Just trying to 'rank' the places i applied to.... for this year and possibly next year if I don't get accepted! Which would you pick as top choice???? Thanks and good luck to all!

Thanks for the help!
I have applied to columbia university and got an interview.
I dont know anything about the university other than it is prestigious.
I was thinking of applying to NYU but they advised not to do so because I need some experience first.(I will be graduating in 2011). They told me to apply for the international program to have some experience and then apply for the post graduate program. I asked several docs and they all said that residents have a lot of patients.
Do you know if the international program is worth going to? Especially that it is expensive.:xf:

As for Tufts, I know that they have state of the art facilities and have been newly accredited by the ADA. The program is clinically oriented. The people are very friendly. But the cost of tuition is exorbotant.

Hey thanks so much for replying, I'm relieved that there is some perio solidarity!!! I was seriously getting worried.

The international program at NYU is even more expensive than the specialty program at Tufts. I believe it costs around 65k a year. I know the intnl residents get to do a ton of implants too. However the main draw was Tarnow......who is now up at Columbia and no intnl program there. I don't know how much exposure to Tarnow you would get up at Columbia seeing as he's just starting out.

As for the regular pg perio, Tufts I think costs 45k, columbia and nyu 35K. NE programs are expensive but at least you get grounded in the city if you eventually want to live there (create contacts etc.)

BTW, does ANYONE know whether the iv sedation certification you get taught in Massachusettes schools like Tufts will let you practice it in New York state?
