Hey everyone!
Which book are you all using or used for Gross anatomy? I haven't touched bio in so long that I felt it may be somewhat heloful to look over things in General. Let me know which textbook to buy and how much it costs.
Thanks!

"Head and Neck Anatomy for Dental Medicine" -Eric Baker et al. was our primary resource but many students opted for a Netter's atlas for further reference. We also had Gray's Anatomy for Students (2nd Edition). However, all of the material we were tested upon was taught during lecture; the ppts included mostly Baker's stuff and some Gray's. I only used these books occasionally as a supplemental resource.

Please note: both books were found on our digital library, VitalSource Bookshelf. As you probably know, NYUCD's curriculum is virtually all digital.

Wow...Thanks for responding NoPresident. I had no idea the curriculum was all digital. I was just hoping to brush up on stuff, I guess for now will just look for a general book (from the 2 you stated above) and just look over it. I am starting in the Fall and would really appreciate any further advice you could give me. Thank you once again for responding.

You're welcome. Head and Neck was probably the toughest course 1st semester followed by Biochem. If you haven't taken Biochem yet you might want to peruse some material if you have the time and are really that amped up about getting a head start. Overall, D-school (so far) is not very intellectually difficult, it's really just a huge amount of information coming at you like a fire hose (especially true during block exam weeks). The old adage of not falling behind rings especially true; just commit to actively studying regularly and you'll be fine.

Congrats on your acceptance!

NoPresdient, I have actually never taken Biochem. I did take Gross Anatomy in undergrad and did well but it was nothing compared to what I will be doing in D school. Biochem course is pretty much wrapped up in one sem?

It's Fall semester during the first year. You take it concurrent with Head and neck (and a ton of other extra courses that they can squeeze in). It's titled "Building Blocks of Life" as it's not just biochemistry but it also has aspects of genetics. Quite honestly I thought it was the worst class we took first year. I prepped for it by taking an online course from a 4 year before entering D1. That helped me get the concepts a bit before the class started but be prepared for a heavy load of memorization of pathways and products...yay.

The course doesn't take the entire semester to complete but there is a final at the end (after a month or so without any biochem). My best advice would be to put in what you can to do well on the first 2 exams so you don't have to worry about how well you do on the final (the final was worth only 10% this year) and so you can focus heavily on anatomy and your other courses.

Good luck and enjoy 😉 It's really not as bad as it sounds but it is a lot of work.

Thank you Davidius...I think am gonna start skimming through stuff. Not that am a nerd or anything, but I also dont want to be memorizing 24/7 if I can help it since I practically will be doing nothing over the next 4-5 months.
