i'm trying to gauge what's a reasonable amount for rent per month. obviously cheapest is best, but at what price is rent where it becomes too much? ex) is $1200 manageable or pushing it?

You can get a nice share close to school or a tiny studio for $1200ish. If you want the doorman elevator building with no roommates and a door on your bedroom start thinking well over $2000. Unless you live in Brooklyn or Jersey.

Check out Craigslist for shares or contact Waterside plaza -- great place to live your first year (or more)!

eh, thanks, but that didn't really answer my question. i'm more or less trying to survey what you guys pay for rent so i can see what's normal. thanks!

It answered your first question, but to answer this one I pay $750 for a tiny tiny tiny room in a 3 bedroom close to school. Roomies are a couple of randoms and I found the place on Craigslist.

Last year I lived in a room in Peter Cooper for $1450. STPCV is expensive.

My friends have an alcove studio in Kips Bay for just over 2k

Another buddy has a tiny studio in Waterside for 1300

Etc etc. Living in Manhattan is expensive.

My friends at Stuytown are paying about $850/month for a 2 converted 3 but they are on 14th and Avenue C (furthest away from campus in Stuytown). My other classmates who live on 20th and 1st ave are paying about $910/month.

Waterside ranges but it's around $1000 to 1900 depending on room layout.

I'm in Peter Cooper but in a dorm style setup so I pay $676/month for everything.

These prices are hot.

I'm gunna be checking out nearby apts next week. What places would you recommend?

I already know about Waterside, Peter Cooper, and Stuytown. Any more?

And how does one go about getting a dorm style setup?

Thanks so much.

dorm... as in... share a room? have a roommate?

I'm at Kips Bay Court -- I have my own bedroom in a 3br apt converted to a 4br for $1210 a month. My friends at waterside who have a 2br converted to 3 are paying about 1300 to 1400 a month and my friends in a 1br converted to 2 are paying 1500 a month there. Basically, the more people you share the place with, the cheaper your rent will get.

Yep, I share a room with another D1. The room is huge (15x15) and wouldn't know what to do with the extra space if it was myself.

There are many smaller apts around campus but most of my classmates live at waterside, pcv and stuytown.

I just found a 1 bedroom, 700 sq. ft. apartment in a doorman, gym, business center building, with all utilities covered on 28th and 3rd for $1250!

... that has to be some kind of scam. did you already sign the lease?

I was looking around for apartments with friends and spoke to an individual in the lobby of the building who got me in touch with another individual in the building who was leaving in July and told me the landlord was looking for a tenant to take over the unit. Apparently, the unit is rent controlled and hence the low rent. I think you can find cheap apartments if you get in touch with the right people and if you can find something that is rent controlled.

Paying $1450/month for a true 2 bedroom in Stuy Town. Sharing with a roommate.

Thinking about financial district for next year.
