I will be starting NYU in July. The health insurance offered seems horrible. After I add my spouse to the plan it will cost nearly 700$ per month.I don't think it even includes dental. That is insane. Any options?
I think that the student insurance is a excellent deal. I was hospitallized last spring for 6 days and absolutely EVERYTHING was covered!!!!! I also have weekly doctors appointments now at NYU med center and all of it is covered! I DONT EVEN HAVE A CO-PAY!!!!!
Also, my first semester I enrolled my husband because he was working with independent contracts until the right job came along. Well...there was this bad Chinese take-out incident (from Suzie's on Bleeker) that ended in bloody diarrhea and a three day hospital stay at the NYU medical center. ALL of his bills were covered too!!!
I go to the walk-in clinic at the main campus for all of my regular illnesses like sinus infections, etc and i do not have to pay for any of it. ALSO, I went to the eye clinic there, which is a private clinic, and only had a $20 co-pay.
Bottom line, DO IT. You are required to have comprehensive insurance as a dental student, unless you can provide proof of equal coverage from another insurance company. My husband now has some of the best insurance around, and I STILL keep all of my student insurance.
As long as you stay within the NYU Med Center, everything is basically covered. The insurance is pretty ****ty if you go outside the network. AND its prescription coverage is HORRIBLE. That is why I keep my husband's insurance as well. It only takes 4 months of Singulair to max out the student health insurance prescription benefits! But, inspite of its weaknesses, it is a real deal. Just check into how much independent insurance is--You will FAINT!!
Hope this helped!!!
