I am not too sure about housing in NY. But if you want to live in NJ, make sure you live near the train station. NJ Transit trains go directly to NY Penn Station, and from there you can take the bus (I believe M16). It will take you 45 min in train if you live in Central Jersey and plus 15 min or so in the bus.

Apartments in Central Jersey cost around $1000 for one bedroom and $1200+ for two bedrooms per month.
