NYU is one of those dental schools that has undergone massive transformations. 5 years ago they were in the middle of the pack when it came to research dollars and this year they hit top 5. They have less and less drop outs due to a new program to help kids that are struggling, a world class implant and cosmetic dept and the fact they are spending $30 million or so re-doing the whole school from the student lounge to all new clinics makes the place more attractive.

Now my info comes from my dads partner that teaches at NYU. They are looking for much higher caliber students, hence a 19aa average for 2008 incoming class. But due to tution, people with lower stats will still get in but not as many as before. I think he told me for 2009 they only accpeted 15% of applicants

at orientation the info we got was that only 3 people dropped out last year with the new curriculum and academic counseling services.

the new clinics are actually really really nice.

I heard there have been students in the past that where accepted with 17's as well.

look, whatever may have happened in the past years might be completely not applicable for future cycles.

if the lady says you need >18s, I would just take it at face value rather than risk it.

I'm sure glad to hear NYU is taking the necessary steps to improve their school. I think in the near future it will no longer be a, "backup school" or a school with a reputation for accepting applicants with stats no other school would take. NYU is in a prime location like UCLA. The only difference is UCLA is known to be extremely competitive. I think if NYU wanted to it could become another UCLA. It'll be better for dentistry as a whole in the long run, as the school becomes more selective in their criteria. I think NYU will soon be a #1 choice for many applicants.

i have one 17 in ochem. others are 18+.

AA:20
TS:19
PA:19

am i screwed because of one 17?

I actually asked NYU the same question the other day, because two of my scores are under 18. They simply said they have no cut offs, and will consider the entire application of any applicant. Hence if you aren't strong in math, you can still be accepted (as I hope is the case of mine). It is also important to note that I know of a guy who got into Columbia with a 14 in QR. Just some food for thought.

I actually called NYU yesterday because of this thread and they said the same thing... My math score was a 15, and reading was 17 but everything else was above 18 so they said I should be fine. Whatever that means.

unless you guys have no other choice....like 15/16 DAT and GPA below 3.0....don't bother with NYU. That place will make your life miserable and will suck the $$$ from your wallet. I know ppl from that place and trust me they are unhappy!!!!!
