I have never been to New York. I am trying to book travel/hotel for my interview and to be honest, I am getting confused.

If NYU is in Greenwich village, thats on the south end of Manhattan...

questions:
1) What neighborhood should I find a hotel in?
2) Is it possible to get a hotel in the Bronx and then take the subway?
3) Which airport? JKA or La Guardia?

Basically I just don't fully understand the size of New
york. I am from Chicago, and I know you can get anywhere in the city by public transportation in about an hour. Is that the case in NY? Can I get from Bronx to NYU in 1.5 hours?

i suggest flying into la guardia and taking the new york airport service shuttle into the city (http://www.nyairportservice.com/).. it's $21 round trip and will get you into the city the cheapest & fastest. i can't tell you which hotel to stay in, just to avoid hotel pennsylvania like the plague.. that place smelled like a ***** house.

jb!🙂

Hi! Here's a handy little website for trying to find out what train to take. It's like mapquest directions but for subways : www dot hopstop dot com. It will also give estimates on the time it'll take to get from pt A to B. I'd slap on 20 minutes just in case of delays. That happens from time to time.

I don't know La Guardia so well. I like JFK more. From JFK, you can take the airtrain over to the A line and transfer to where you need to go.

As far as hotels, when my bf's family came from California, they stayed in NJ. There are some hotels for not that much right over the river and you can take the PATH trains into Manhattan. PATH drops you off by Ground 0/WTC. Not sure if you need to exit and walk to the nearest station or not. You can ride the subway from there to NYU.

here is the mta website: www dot mta dot info. Just go into maps --> nyc transit --> subways

good luck!! :luck:

NYUCD is not where the main campus is, it's actually around midtown.

1) What neighborhood should I find a hotel in? I stayed at the Gershwin. They have hotel rooms and hostels if you're up to it. Its about a 15 min walk to the NYUCD and right off 5th ave. so you can do your shopping.

2) Is it possible to get a hotel in the Bronx and then take the subway?

3) Which airport? JFK or La Guardia? JFK is easier and cheaper to get into and leave the city. You can take the Airtrain and Subway for $7 to the city.

I can tell you where NOT to stay and that is "Hotel Carter". What a dive! I had never been to NY before either, and I just looked for something cheap and available.

The room didn't even have an alarm clock or working outlets. When I told the front desk that my room didn't have electricity the guy asked, "do you need the outlets for anything?"😕 I said "well, I might need to plug my razor in if the batteries are low so I can shave tomorrow morning" and he said "oh just come down to the lobby, we have outlets everywhere!"😱

Also, I asked the front desk for a wake-up call (since I had no alarm clock in the room and nothing else to wake me up) and of course they didn't call me. Fortunately my wife called me in the morning to get me up in time🙂

The only good thing about Hotel Carter is that it's very close to Times Square ...

I would say any hotel south of Central Park would be fine to stay in. The subway is fast and can get you within 10 min walking distance to the dental school (it's not on the main NYU campus; it's by some hospitals on the east side of midtown). Taxis are good too but a bit more expensive.

Here's the NYC MTA link for planning a subway or bus ride.

Works great, I used it last week. Using the subways and busses is one of the best parts og going to NYC for me. Since you're from Chicago you might not be as easily excited.
Regarding hotels, the only cheap way to go in Manhatten is one where you have to share a bathroom. Otherwise you're looking at $150/night for a 2-star w/ various problems. For my next interview there I'm staying at the Comfort Inn Brooklyn Bridge (hoping the brand name will ensure better quality). A little further travel, but I'll get there a day early and do a test run.

I called the school this morning to schedule an interview. I asked where to fly/stay and while the receptionist didn't have an airport recommendation, she said she would -off-the-record- recommend the marcel hotel (only a block or two from the school). I haven't reserved my room yet and I haven't checked pricing.

good luck with your interview, as the yankees just lost haha

Marcel Hotel is about $360 a night for a single room.

double tree in jersey city was 200 something and is 5 miles away from the school it took about 25 min to get to the school in the morning and barely any traffic
you also get fresh baked cookies when you check in
