NYU interview!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After booking a hotel (Union Square Inn) I canceled the booking after reading horrible reviews. I have now opted to stay in a Holiday Inn close to JFK. Reviews were better. But I don't really know how long the commute is going to take. Google maps says it would take around 30 mins.

I wouldn't gamble with NYC rush hour traffic, so take the subways/trains if you can. You may be able to hop something express and they're generally on or close to on time.

which airport is closest to NYU college of dentistry? thanks

yea my research has led me to holiday inn as well...but i think i will stay with family friends instead.

Careful, there are delays at Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK all the time. I think Newark and LG might officially be the two worst in the country... if not, they're up there. If you're close enough to take Amtrak into Penn, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Yea, once I was flying into LG and first they made the plane circle around the airport for an hour and then it took them 2 hours to give me my luggage - so definitely try to have everything in your carry-on. Woodside station is a Long Island Rail Road station that is very close to LG, so if you guys want to save some money, you could get a cab to there, and then take the train into Penn Station (takes about 13 minutes on the train, and you can find the train schedule on the mta website). Woodside is also a subway stop, so you could take the 7 train into grand central, bryant park or times square (subway takes about 20 minutes from woodside into the city, given there are eneo delays or anything, and they got express train running during rush hours as well).

Got an interview email this morning! Are any of you guys going on Sep 25?

when was your application mailed?

I just scheduled my interview for October 12th. Anybody else going on or around that date?

Congrats man!!

Thanks man. Broncos are starting to represent! haha

Claugh,
My application was mailed out on 7/23. I got an email acknowledging that they received my app about five days before I received the interview email.

Just got the invite yesterday and booked my flight today! Zero hour is Oct. 11. Who else will have the awesome privilege of being there at the same time as Vapor1122? 😀

Mine is Oct. 16th. I am really excited. If anyone knows of a good hotel near the school, let us know.

hey megatron77, i also have the interview on sep. 25. is yours also at 8:00 in the morning? see you there! i'm so anxious and excited! best of luck everyone =) :luck:

hey if any of you guys have question about getting around NYC or general questions about the big apple, just ask me. I have been living in here for eight years now, so... 😀

I just got back from NYC and here are some tips for those of you going soon.

I'd prefer to fly into and from JFK. It might be farther but you can take the Airtrain and subway into the Manhattan for only $7. It only took my about 30 mins to get to my hotel off 5th Ave. and 27th from JFK.

If you're flying into La Guradia you have to the take the bus or taxi into the city. My taxi fare to LGA was $30+tip and that was early Sunday morning without traffic. You can expect to pay a little more during traffic.

As for my hotel, I stayed at the Gershwin hotel. Its a hotel/hostel. I opted for the Hostel with 10 beds per room. 3 nights cost me only $120. It was clean and the best part is you get to meet new people everyday. It was the first time i ever stayed in a hostel and I loved it.

Have fun in NYC and good luck with your interviews.

Some taxis in Philly take credit cards, actually. So it's not completely out of the question for NYC. 😛

Hmm. I flagged down a cab in Philly earlier this summer (that stupid taxi line down from Wawa), and the guy had the credit card reader mounted in the middle of his dashboard - except it didn't work. I just struck up casual conversation with the guy, and he said most independent cabs have malfunctioning readers in their cars, because they don't care for it, but the city mandates it's installation. Long story short, bring cash anyway.

Do the taxis take credit cards?

Out of the 4 cabs I took this week, only one had a credit card reader. It's hard to specifically wave down a cab with a reader, so bring cash.

Yeah, I've never tried them, just seen them. Good to know, though.

yeah, sorry for the sarcasm...i just had a really bad experience with transportation in NYC, and it just doesn't seem like the taxis would take credit cards. i guess i should have checked my sources first 😎
