Anybody know anything about Invisalign? 2nd years here are getting set to start this course next semester...they say that we're the guinea pig dental school to initiate this.

Is this the future of orthodontics? I dont know the ease of this treatment, but Im assuming only orthodontics will be able to use this procedure??

Actually, I believe any dentist can do invisalign, all he/she has to do is attend some seminars or something and become certified to use it. I'm about to get a set myself. To make a long story short, lost my retainer when I was young, never went back, teeth shifted slightly, and invisalign is gonna fix that. There are cases where invisalign won't correct the problem. I think they take it on a case by case basis. It doesn't make the process any faster, but definately makes cleening your teeth easier. The last set you usually use as your retainer after treatment is complete. If anyone knows anything different about what I've posted, please correct me!

Haha...so far your theory is correct. It's Saturday and I wrote off today as a stay at home day. I'll play it by ear tomorrow...but that wind/snow doesn't seem to be letting up

init4damoney is right.

General dentists can do Invisalign. All you need to do is attend seminars and get certified. Since they're implementing this program next semester here at NYU, we'll be automatically certified and can be authorized to do Invisalign right after we graduate.

This is interesting. Didn't invaslign only offer the procedure to orthodontists at first?

Do any of you dental students here think you're ready for invaslign at this point in your clinical career??

Talk about ironic... You guys are getting snowed in down in NYC and there is NOTHING up here in Buffalo. Usually it's the other way around.

On Invisalign:

Invisalign is really designed to fix one specific type of orthodontic problem, and that is Skeletal Class-I malocclusions in adults. This is where both the maxilla and mandible are in good proportion and all the person needs is to straighten out some crooked teeth.

For all other ortho problems, an orthodontist should treat those. For example, Invisalign will not fix Skeletal Class-II or Class-III adults-- Those patients require orthognathic surgery. Invisalign will also not fix problems such as posterior crossbites, which require things like rapid palatal expanders. Problems involving open bites can't be solved by Invisalign either.

Diagnosis is extremely important, which is why you will need to do a cephalometric analysis as well as space analysis to determine whether or not the patient is a good candidate for Invisalign.

I like Invisalign though, because it lets GPs take care of Skeletal Class-I malocclusions which is within our capabilities to treat but are usually sent to orthos anyway because we don't have the time to treat them. I'm definitely going to do Invisalign as a GP.

I have to admit I do find myself envious of you NYUCD guys for getting exposure to so much neat stuff. 😛

NYU Integrates Invisalign? Into Dental School Curriculum

Santa Clara, CA - May 28 - Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN - News), the inventor of Invisalign?, a proprietary method of straightening teeth without wires and brackets, today announced that New York University College of Dentistry is integrating Invisalign into its undergraduate curriculum.

Beginning this fall, Invisalign and its accompanying treatment precepts will be included in undergraduate orthodontic instruction at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). NYUCD graduates more than eight percent of all U.S. dentists each year, and has both a distinguished faculty and a technologically-advanced clinical facility.

NYUCD will ultimately include Invisalign clinical training and certification as part of introductory and advanced orthodontic lectures. The institution's long-term goals are to create comprehensive didactic and practical Invisalign clinical courses, and to create a faculty structure that educates and trains students while supervising patient care.

"Introducing Invisalign into dental and post-graduate course curriculum is a primary goal of our clinical education initiative," said Dr. Lou Shuman, Vice President of Clinical Education at Align. "We applaud NYUCD for recognizing Invisalign as a valuable and necessary aspect of their educational discipline, and fully support their plans to train future dental professionals."

As the first steps in the educational process, orthodontic faculty at NYUCD recently completed Invisalign certification at the University, and Align hosted an elective Invisalign certification workshop for graduating seniors.

"Like other proven treatment modalities, Invisalign is an orthodontic discipline that should be incorporated into the dental curriculum, where students can learn concepts and practical applications in a structured environment," said Dr. Richard Vogel, Executive Associate Dean at NYUCD. A senior at UOP mentioned something about being allowed to take the Invisalign course if they are not intending to specialize in orthodontics. But I don't think it was an actual course in the pre-doc curriculum.

But that's really neat you guys will be able to take the course. Sure beats our watered-down "be sure to refer all your cases" ortho curriculum.
