Hi all,
I am applying to a number of different MSW programs on the east coast, but NYU is my number one choice. I cannot find any information on their acceptance rate and I am killing myself trying to figure out if I will get in.
-My undergrad degree is in human services with a minor is sociology with a social welfare interest.
-My gpa is 3.87 and I belong to three honors societies
-I have a ton of volunteer experience with different populations
-I have leadership experience as I was the vice president of my sorority for two years
-I plan to pursue geriatric social work

If anyone has applied and gotten in or has any thoughts about whether or not you think I would get in, I would greatly appreciate a response!!!

Thanks!

They accept anyone with a pulse. Seriously, I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but the acceptance rate is over 80%. I've known people who've gotten in with less than 3.0 gpa and far less volunteer experience than you. Also, even though it has a reputation for being very clinical, unless your parents will pay for everything, I'm not sure it's the best value, since it is very expensive. Hunter, for example, is also very clinical and significantly cheaper.

At any rate, you will probably get into every school you want. Admissions into social work schools is very easy compared to other professional schools, and NYU doesn't even require a GRE. Just think about where you want to live and how much you want to go into debt. And just relax and enjoy the ride!

I really appreciate your input! I am surprised that their acceptance rate is so high, but I guess that works for me! I have heard that NYU is outrageously expensive compared to other MSW programs, but that is one of the main reasons I am applying to other schools. I just really want to study in New York. Do you mind if I ask where you went or go to school?

As clinical said, you will get in without a doubt. NYU has a great program, particularly for clinical, but unless you have the means to pay for it upfront I would probably consider less expensive options, particularly since the salaries for social workers are relatively low.

Ditto, I have a few friends who went to Columbia and they are still paying off loans based on the income contingent plan even after several years of effort. There are some semi-new loan cancellation programs but they still require 10 years of on time payments before forgiveness.

Your grades, etc are good... you should be fine for most MSW programs. I only know admissions "secrets" on my former program and they rejected people mainly for compatibility reasons... not academic achievement.

Hope that helps! Good luck in your choice!

thank you both for your input! out of curiosity, what programs did you both attend? i just want to hear about other schools' programs and how they were. this is just all so confusing to me!

I went to Columbia which is particularly strong in research and policy but has a fine clinical program, as well, although perhaps somewhat less renowned that NYU (at least locally). I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Oh ok. I was going to apply to Columbia but because I am more interested in the clinical side of social work I decided against it. What is the story of Fordham's MSW program? I live in Virginia and people around here are not familiar with their program. What is their rep like? I considered applying to Hunter after talking to some people, but I have a hard time justifying the $125 application fee that they have, especially when I am not sure about my odds of getting in.

I am at Fordham and i really like it. It's a big program which i like (lots class choice) and my professors have been stellar.

As for Hunter, even out-of-state tuition is well priced so you should suck up the App fee and apply. I know students there and they really enjoy it as well.
