NYU or Case?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
not as expensive as NYU. I don't remember exact figures, but closer to high 60's, and low 70's. Case's class is also only 70. I worry though about the new curriculum that they have and that it's untested. It's hard for me to decide...

Hmmm... Cleveland or New York?

I'll be in New York next fall buddy. Come to the FUN side of the island.

Both school are expensive.
If u have family, go to Case, if u dont, go to NYU.

I only got accepted to those two schools so this thread is of particular interest to me as well..

I'm leaning towards case, since NYU is too ridiculously expensive.. i also prefer the smaller class sizes and my gut feeling tells me that case is the better school overall. I realllly hate cleveland though, and new york happens to be my favorite city in the U.S.......

Seriously? I didn't see anything about NYU that didn't scream out "progressive" and "concerned with students" despite the large class size.

The two negatives always mentioned about NYU are class size (seriously, how large was your undergrad class? Did it matter?) which, to me means more opportunities. Second is cost. Cost of living aside, though, NYU isn't THAT much more expensive than any of the other privates. Seems almost like splitting hairs when you're torn over 20,000 on a 300,000 debt. But in the end, go where you're comfortable.

This is a tough one. Really depends on your own preferences. Yes, it would be awesome to live in NYC for four years-but your going to dschool to get an education first and foremost. Where do you think you will get better training and where do you think you will get a better education?

Besides, Cleveland is not as bad as it's rep. Born and raised, once you get to know the area, you'll see it actually has a lot to offer. In addition you could probably buy a pretty decent house in the Cleveland area for the same or less than you would to rent a single bedroom apartment in NYC.

Overall, I say CASE!

NYU and Case are my two options as well... im leaning toward Case.

My initial impression of Cleveland was NOT a good one, maybe I was just having a bad day (although bums harrassing me usually doesnt occur on my bad days) =) Despite my crazy experiences getting to Case, once I got there, everything was fine. People were out and about, everyone seemed happy and the surrounding area was quite cozy. Im from Southern California, and I found Case to be comparable to USC in LA. The campus is great, but the surrounding area isn't so great. I'm sure that other parts of Cleveland has many things to offer as does many other areas of LA.

Lastly, like someone mentioned...its only four years, it'll be a good experience (well for me especially since I've known nothing other than California), and it's what you make of it right?!

For those who are choosing Case, I'll most likely see you there!

I would say NYU...I plan on going there next fall unless something bizarre happens...I didn't get into Case but I dont think I would have really wanted to attend anyway, mainly b/c of their new curriculum that someone mentioned in an earlier response. I think NYU unfairly gets a bad rep. The school has phenomenal facilities, the student/teacher ratio is actually like less than 10/1 b/c they have many professors. So many opportunities w/ research, clinical, etc. Nobody is going to hold your hand there, you have to put yourself out there and make things happen, which i think is great b/c when you are out practicing and open up your own place you have to make things happen..nobody is going to do it for you They also train you in cosmetic aspects of dentistry..something you wont find anywhere else if I'm not mistaken. It's in NYC which is a great opportunity. As was mentioned earlier, its not much more expensive than other private schools. Yes the class is big, but its smaller than pretty much any undergrad so whats the big deal? Also, given the depth and size of this year's applicant pool..it really isn't that "safety" school that it was once considered to be. They also are now able to pick and choose who they want, rather than settle on people.

I have the 2 options as well. I loved new york when I was there, but I chose Case over New York for many reasons. It was a hard decision for me.
Here's why
Number 1: Case has a much smaller class size.
Number 2: Save around 40k
Number 3: Case is more relaxed
Number 4: Pass/fail can be a good thing...more cooperation among the students
Number 5: You can concentrate better at Case (less partying?)
Number 6: I'm more confident that I will get my DMD at case
Number 7: More clinical experience
....in sum, just go where you're more comfortable with.

In Cleveland you can buy a decent little house in the heights for $100,000 or rent for 500-700/mo. In NYC, who knows, but it for damn sure ain't that cheap, right?

Case will make you a great dentist. It has a great tradition and a great philosophy on teaching dentistry. The new cirriculum is nothing to worry about. They know what is on the boards and will do everything in their power to ensure you are prepared. I think they even bring in a private company for extra tutoring and board prep to ensure you feel prepared.

I don't know much about NYU, other than COL is expensive.

Case will cost you about $270,000 if you stick with their budget. (housing, living exp, etc included)

Oh well, maybe this helps maybe it doesn't.

Thanks guys for all the help. I think I'm pretty set on putting my deposit down for Case. I still haven't heard from my state schools, but I think I will definitely be happy at Case.
