Hi all - I've been planning on attending Einstein and just got accepted off of the waiting list at NYU, but I have some major reservations.

My impression of NYU has been that it's a pretty competitive environment, and that especially during clinical years the attitude is to throw people into things and see if they sink or swim. There doesn't seem to be much time or patience on the part of profs/docs to take the time to explain things and really guide the students. Has this been your experience? I worked at the NYU Cancer Clinic for a few months as well, and was very unimpressed with the quality of the people that NYU hires and the way that they manage their facilities. What have you thought about the school administration and whether they are helpful to the students, etc? I know that NYU has a very good reputation, and the match list is really impressive, but I'm not sure that the environment and attitude of the school is what I'm looking for. I was just wondering how everyone's experience has been, and whether you guys think that my impression of the students and the school is accurate at all - a lot if it is just first impressions, etc..and I don't want to base my entire decision on it. I would really appreciate any imput that you can give me.
Thanks.

If I were your shoes, I'd go to Einstein.

MUCH more positive attititude. The way the curriculum is set up and the folks that go there. They are like so bloody progressive, it's amazing.

(I'm at a different med school, but a bunch of wonderful interns/ residents who I worked with last year had just graduated from there and had great things to say about the place. One of my mentors in med school is also from Einstein. And another great geriatrics doc i know is also from there)

Of course this is just second hand info, so take it for what it's worth.
But i hope whatever decision you take goes well.

<I'd pick sanity in medschool than the "supposed" *bling bling*. Actually Einstein's reputation is also very strong as well. >

Einstein does have a strong reputation, but the bottom line is that NYU has a superior match list. The idea of "competitive environment" or "time and patience...." is nonsense. What you actually do in med school is meaningless, but NYU will get you a better residency.

i was deciding between another school and einstein as well and i chose einstein cause the people were really nice and laid back. also, the apartments are great! no dorms lol

anyone have any other opinions about NYU? I'll be go there next year and was not aware of any of the negative points mentioned about NYU by the OP. When I went up there for ther interview, the students seemed very friendly and happy. Plus, I actually like the idea of dorms.

One of my MCAT instructors went to NYU and he was really happy there. He said it wasn't high stress, and I guess it really couldn't have been too bad because he had time to work for Princeton Review on the side.

Also, I lived in the neighborhood for 2 years and I liked it there, although it is outlandishly expensive.

Of course, I didn't even get an interview at the school so I don't know much first hand. Good luck!

I recently had to deal with the same exact situation and chose NYU. While AECOM does have an excellent reputation, I believe that its influence does not really extend beyond the Northeast whereas NYU seems to have more national recognition. On the subject of match lists, AECOM had a rather exceptional year, however so did NYU which boasted significant numbers into many of the most competitive residencies (ie. 8 into derm). As far as the OP's comments regarding the competitive nature at NYU, that is definitely news to me. The impression I received while I was there from students and faculty was that it was very laid back and students were encouraged to pursue interests outside of the classroom. For example, my tour guide mentioned how NYU went to great lengths to obtain reduced ticket prices for their medical students for a wide variety of events and activities that included Broadway shows and sporting events. Another reason that I chose NYU was its superior location in New York. While dorms at AECOM are an incredible value at approx $300/month, NYU dorms are still quite reasonably priced at $600/month. For me, it was not a very difficult decision, but these things depend on the individual. They are both great schools and regardless of which you choose, you will come out with a great medical education and wonderful opportunities. Best of luck!

I was also in the same boat, and originally leaning towards Einstein for the same reasons. Also, I was in need of married housing and NYU has a shortage...but I was overwhelmingly convinced to go to NYU by both NYU students and physician friends in NY and other states...Here is what I can tell you...the reputation part is definitely on the NYU side, so if you think you are going for anything competitive NYU definitely is better. The competition is everywhere...those who want derm. or ortho at Einstein are going to be the same as those at NYU...
BUT what is true is the "though you in and see if you stay afloat"...both NYU undergrad and NYU med. are notorious for that...I think that it does make it hard but if you learn to swim up you will go much farther...it is one of the most important things that I took with my from undergrad...if you want something you will need to learn to get it.
Finally, I posted an NYU Einstein poll in May, you can check it out...good luck in whatever you decide...
