Hi. I just matched into NYU's medicine program and I'm looking for suggestions from any current residents or med students on where to live. Specifically, I was wondering if it's feasible to live a bit further away (30 min commute or so) during your intern year to save some rent money. Is this realistic, or should I just suck it up and fork out the cash to live in Murray Hill? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm familiar w/ NYC, so feel free to throw out names of other neighborhoods that might be convenient to live in. Thanks.

if you live anywhere along 1st-3rd ave from upper east side to the village, you will be ok. the 2nd ave limited bus runs very frequently. for intern year, i'd splurge because after working 18hrs, you won't feel like walking to midtown to get to the 6 train to xfer to another subway to queens or brooklyn. It is possible to do, but will be tough. lots of people live in the kips bay complex. Living on the west side to get to NYU would be almost as bad as living in NJ as far as commuting is concerned...the cross-town options are very slow.

I would definitely live close to campus. I just signed a lease on a great place on 2nd/33rd and can't wait to move in. If you spend money on anything, it should definitely be where you choose to live. You're going to want something close, comfortable, and liveable. It will make youre life much more bearable while you're enduring the long hours of residency. Check out all of the good websites (craigslist.org, city-habitat.com, anchornyc.com, nofeelistings.com) and don't pay a fee for your apartment.

About price: stick to your range and keep looking until you find the apartment you want for the money you can spend. Check all the time and start looking early. In fact, if you're going to move, move today. Don't wait until right before your start residency to avoid the enormous influx of new renters. Real estate is at a relative low in March/early April. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice, everyone.
