Can students at NYU dental share your experiences of the school. I am contemplating on whether or not I should go there. I love the city atmosphere and loved what I saw at the school when I interviewed there. I did get into a much cheaper school, in a pretty crappy area, so I want to make sure I'm making the right choice. If NYU is a good school with a good rep among the dental community, I don't mind taking out more loans.

I know NYU is pretty good when it comes to clinical exp and its students do great on the boards. But how are other things at the school? Like getting chairs in the clinic, specialization rates, faculty, reputation among dental professionals and any other insider notes.

What other school did you get into?

Lets say you were doing tuition alone and had living expenses covered and even had a 20k year scholarship, that 240k would ballon to 382,005k in just 10 years(3265 monthly payment). I can imagine you're looking at closer to 450k-500k when its all said and done(due to living expenses). Its fine that you're okay for taking out more loans, but be sure to actually do the numbers and see them on paper before making a decision.

The other school might be in a crappy location, but its only four years. Look how fast undergrad went. If the school really is that much cheaper, you could even do your residency in NYC and actually afford to live here and even make payments on your resident salary.

don't forget interest! Say you take out 450k loans and get the roughly that standard mark of 6.8% interest added yearly. Say you take out a 20 year loan. That 450k loan you took out means you will probably end up paying back over 600k. with ease. If the other school is substantially cheaper, you could get it paid off in like 5-8 years by 1) not having to take out as much loans so therefore not having as much interest pile up.

The thing is I'm a non-trad student, I've had a previous job for a few years and have some money to put towards dental school, the extra loans, if I were to go to NYU would be around 120-150k, the way I have calculated it(I would most likely live at home). What I'm trying to emphasize is I wouldn't mind shelling out extra cash, because I do love the school for its location, diversity, class size and hectic environment, so long as the school and curriculum itself are good. The other school is Stony Brook btw. Plus the thing is, with how saturated dentistry is in NYC, I might not want to start practicing here.

Well one could argue you could use that 100k for a downpayment for a practice after one or two years, especially since stony brook is a good school and only an hour away from NYC by train.

I've read on dental town that NYU really works you(good) and you see a great amount of amounts and a variety of cases. Pass rate has been extremely high over the years. But often not, they feel that people do fall through the cracks and get lost in the big class size. But if you're one that doesn't need their hand held, it could be an environment that you would strive at, especially if you take the initiative and seek out opportunities. I love how the clinic was open on weekends and you could see more patients here than at most schools.

Well it seems like your heart is set on the school then. If the school is worth that money in the bank, pay that tuition every semester. I remember a student making a blog like post regarding his four years at NYU on student doctor. i'm sure with a little search, you can find it. Linh Phan on youtube has an extensive video blog of her time at NYU.

Thanks for your help, its such a hard decision, I've seen that post that the D4 did, and Lihn's youtube channel has played a significant part on why I would love to go to NYU. I hope I can make the right choice.

People on here might murder you for even questioning NYU over stonybrook.. But I think I would go with NYU.

That is why I initially, didnt give the name of the "cheaper school", in any case, why would you go with NYU over stony brook?
