Because of (what I'm assuming) are the large number of interviewees attending the NYU interview sessions, do you think that applicants are at a strong disadvantage if they do not attend the social and program overview on Friday? I know that receptions are optional, but as the invite said attendance was "strongly encouraged" I'm wondering if interviewing there is futile without the ability to attend the "optional" events.

I don't think I can go for the reception and don't think it will matter. I've never seen people taking attendance or really paying much attention at these things and there will be lots of people coming and going. Also this thing is on the 6th so people like me on the 5th would have to kill a whole day and stay another night waiting around for it which is especially annoying

Agree with the above poster. The dinner events are very informal. The crowds are too big for them to keep track of who is attending and who is not.

As someone who's been on both sides of the process, I wouldn't completely blow off the social events at interviews if you can help it. Whether you want to believe it or not, we do pay attention to our interactions with the interviewees during these events and we do remember who you are. It likely won't make or break anything unless you get completely blasted and make a fool of yourself, but if you're on the border of being ranked high versus low, a pleasant interaction can give you a push in the right direction. That being said, no one is going to fault or penalize you if you have to head out of town for another interview and can't stay for the reception.

Unfortunately, I guess most of us will be in a different town every day this week as the programs have crammed most of their interviews during this intense period. The time outside the interviews will be largely spent traveling between two cities. I can't make it to the dinner event even if I tried. I just can't get there in time. Would have been possible if the interviews were spread apart by at least 1 travel day between each interview.
