Alright so I have been offered the scholarship from NYU for 20k for the year and can be renewed annually. In undergrad I have a full ride scholarship from the IHS paying for all of tuition and so any other scholarships or grants I received get directly deposited into my account for me to use (and save). Does anyone know if it would be the same in dental school? I am planning to have IHS pay for dental school so I thought maybe the 10k scholarship a semester would be credited to my account and given to me since IHS already covers tuition. Anyone know? I tried calling financial aid but they must be off for holidays.

I'm pretty sure NYU would take 20K off your tuition and then IHS pays the remainder. If that wasn't the case, then everyone who has a scholarship to any school would sign up to do military/IHS and get paid tons of money to go to dental school.

Yeah but by that logic, OP shouldn't have been pocketing the surplus in undergrad either (and he's not the only one, either; I personally know others who were able to do the same).

It really depends on how your school handles disbursements and refunds with regard to the scholarship. Short of someone in the same position at NYU stumbling upon this thread, your only choice is to keep trying to contact the school and ask the financial aid department. With that, too, don't trust the advice of just anyone who picks up the phone. Make sure you're talking to a trusted source and try to get as much verification as possible.

I like how you make it seem like I'm doing something illegal. My school sends me the extra money from scholarships I don't ask for it and there's nothing wrong with getting the money from extra. They are called non need based scholaships. Also they were used for my living expenses mommy and daddy didn't pay anything for my school the last four and a half years like many people. With all that being said this would be the same use at nyu since cost of living is so high. I thought since I couldn't get a hold of the school I would try here but that was a mistake Guess I'll just stick with calling the school!

That's actually what you should have done in the first place.....

You would trust SDN over the school?

No I was trying to see if anyone knew or had an idea since the school isn't answering and I'm running out of time to choose a school lol I am probably going to choose colorado but if the nyu scholarship works like this I may choose nyu. Tough decision!
