NYU - Secondary - Screening

I got an email today from NYU -- inviting me to do their secondary. Also, strangely the email said that NYU "screened" before sending me the email. That must be new this year - because I had understood that everyone received a secondary. So I'm excited -- and also, no essay unless you need to explain something physical or emotional that effected your scholastic record. Just apply online with credit card payment!

TOo bad to app is offline, i got it submitted just ahead of that. The only essay is a mitigating circumstances essay in which you can describe any physical or emotional incident that has impacted your studies. Luckily, I can skip this one right over.

I'm so highly amused that within 16 minutes of recieving the NYU invite I thought to hop on SDN and see who else is thought similarly...to my even greater amusement there are already two threads and more than five posts each...I never got to see the app before they took it down, so I'm curious about the mitigating circumstances essay - does it say, or imply, when completeing that essay is appropriate? I mean, I had a ton of family **** affect me emotionally during my studies, and it made grades seem less important, but I don't know if I want to use it as any type of excuse...my grades aren't awful or anything...any thoughts?

Yah, I wonder how they screen then. My understanding is that it is usually a formula based on GPA and MCAT. Though, their email and website makes it seem as if they do screen. And, it seems like every SDNer got one.

I haven't gotten one yet... 🙁 though i'm still waiting for my AMCAS to be verified. Well, at least I haven't gotten a rejection yet either...

Yeah, what's up with the $0.01 fee? I thought it was just a mistake, but I checked my bank statement online, and sure enough, it was charged a penny. Are we going to have to pay the other $84.99 or whatever later on, or will they just charge us when they get straightened ou?

I just got NYU secondary invite today...

I submitted 7/18, was processed 8/2 and got the secondary 8/10...

I'm out of state and my numbers are 3.6/36...

Finally got my NYU secondary...I'm wondering why they're screening since secondaries are such a great way for a med school to make money...

I hope this provides some sense of the screen criteria along with what others have posted.

The application seems pretty basic...a few short questions to make you feel special, then a hit for $85.

for some reason i'm getting the feeling that NYU has some kind of dynamic secondary - did anyone get a question that differed from 'have you had any emotional or physical problems that may have lead to academics?' or something along those lines... + the new york state class requirements jobby
