Hey future NYUCD freshmen...I was just curious as to where everyone is living? Is anyone living at the 26th Street Residence? How about people living off campus?

Hey EHA, congrats on getting into NYU.

Well, last time I checked with NYU Housing, the 26th residences were full and they were taking names for waitlist. After hearing that, I decided to just pursue arranging other living arrangements with a friend of mine also going to NYU, and bypass puttin my name on the waitlist, because that also costs money.

Anyways, were looking for a place on the East Side somewhere.

I would suggest that if you dont have any arrangements as of yet that you try getting on it ASAP. As I understand it, its quite time consuming to find a place in NYC, and stressful at that too.

Anyways, look forward to seeing u in August. LAter

If u live off campus, prob. good idea to be around one of the trains that get to NYU, like 4,5,6, or across the park (think that Arch thing in When Harry Met Sally) the A,C,E or F.

I signed up for the 26th street residence back in April but have not heard anything yet. I hope they send me something(telling me if i am in or not) soon b/c if i don't get in there i need to find a place quick :scared: . Have they sent you anything?

I signed up for 26th st at the end of may. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get in but have not heard anything yet. If not I guess it will be a scramble for an apt!

Did everyone get some sort of form in the mail that you could fill in particular residance halls? How did you get to request where to live?
The only thing I got was a form asking me for a $1000 deposit and if I wanted a room with 2 people or my own room.
What did I miss?

You Did'nt miss a thing thats what I got. The form asked for the type of room you like the program your in and if you would like to name a roommate. I just said the 26th street residence b/c thats were most of the Dental students live so i figure they try to place everyone there. Sorry for the mix up 🙂 . Anyway, have you heard anything form them?

i paid the 1G as well, i called them recently and they said they well assign rooms august 1. which is lame because i want a private room and if i dont get it i have to move off campus and find a place in 3 weeks. tthat is some bullshiet

Thank you for the reply.
Yeah, I'm in the same position with the single room deal. This housing thing is giving me the jitters. I'm one of those non-traditional students so trying to figure this out feels weird to me after not having to share a room with a student in 8 years. I had hoped that NYU would give us assigned rooms in July.

Welcome to NYU, I hope you know what you got yourself into. (JK)
If you don't get the 26th residence, you should put your name on the waitlist, and take an alternate housing at Stivasent Town housing. It's 15 min walking to dental school around 14-18th street and 1st Ave-Ave B, and the apts are much nicer and bigger room than 26th. It's very private, also you don't have to with the security people in the 26th.
Did i mention cheaper?
However, in late Sep and early Oct, there will be a lot of changes to the housing and as result space will be open in 26th and you can move in there at that time. which is better b/c you get to know more people and you can choose your roomate at that time.
most of the students will only stay in NYU housing only for the 1st year and by te 2nd year they will find thier own apt with couple of people which is much cheaper than NYU housing.

Thanks for the info arazi2000

I have a few more questions for you: 🙂
is the problem with the security people at the 26th or stivasent housing? Are the security people mean or just strict? Lastly, what happens in sep and oct to allow for more housing space?

Ok this is my issue: When I was accepted I didn't even get any info about housing so when I called them the deadlien had passed. Anyway, i am on the waiting list...

What are my chances of getting residence if i am from Canada???

Hey guys I know a lot of you must be going through a hassle with NYU Housing so Im gonna ask if theres anyone who wants to bunk with us (me and a roommate) we're open to having more people stay with us. It'll knock down our rent (way cheaper than NYU Housing), and we'll be living a decent distance away (max. 15 min subway).

We're both from outside of New York City, me from Vancouver, and my roommate from Phoenix (lived in NYC for 6 years before).

Anyways, PM me if you're interested.

I'm hoping to land somewhere in 26th St Apts. However, I am bothered by the fact that I will not know where I will be assigned on-campus until the deposit deadline passes. It's expensive to live on-campus as is and it would be a shame if I had to live in a dorm more than 5 mins away from class.

Hey all- I just finished my second year at NYU... My advice, find a nice apartment somewhere around school- there are plenty there and MUCH nicer than 26th street. If you want to live in University housing, choose Stuyvescant. I wish someone told me this info before starting my first year. Trust me!

Thanks for that post. What's wrong with 26th street...the lure of it for me is that it is full of DDS's...where do you suggest we look near NYUCD?

Also, do you mind commenting about the VitalBook in the VitalBook thread?

Thanks so much

What number are you all calling to put your names on the waitlist?

It is nice having dental students in the building. But, if you are into a nicer living experience, I say get a studio or find a roomate and share a place. There are nice apartments by school - Waterside. That is where lots of dental students live.

I am struggling to find a place in NY but no hope so far.

NYUDDS would you give me the number of website of Stuyvescant and Waterside?

Anyone needs a female roommate? Please PM me!!

it's my first year at NYUCD ..and i haven't heard anything about housing..
i've been trying to contact them every couple of days ever since aug. 1st asking them when the letter will come in the mail or at least when exactly the website will be updated to check the housing status. They keep telling me try in a couple of days! It's already been two weeks. Yeah, it's pretty frustrating not knowing where you'll be, especially if you're coming from out o state. I've called them soo many times, but they won't give any info about housing status over phone or fax. I'm like, "it's right in front of your face, just tell me..I already told you enouch info to verify who I am"

HI all
I was reading this forum and decided to respond. I am a fourth year student at NYUCD and I know housing in manhattan is a pretty hectic issue.
Now NYU is one of the most disorganized places in the world. so keep bugging them about the housing. 26th st for the first two years is a good option esp since it is so close to school. and you really never have to see your roomate(which is a good thing if he is a TOOL  )

My advice is to have a back up plan in case 26th st doesnt come thru. Atleast a place to crash for 2weeks, since classes really dont kick in until a month later.

Sty town is another good option. 26th st has A LOT of bull**** which you dont want to deal with, but nevertheless convenience is everything.

COngrats in getting in. STudy hard. youll no what i mean. The first two years at NYU are crucial. try not to fail anything. The last two years are a breeze.
Keep on top of your stuff and youll do fine.

if you guys need anything or any help. let me know.

Hi classmates,

I know how hard it is to find a decent place near school and I didn't want to wait for the student housing forever so I started searching around. Luckily, I have just found a place close to school. Like Shariq said, we really never have to see our roommates because we all busy with school. My studio is large for just me so I am looking for another female student to share it with me. I preferred to have the same roommate at least a year but I llike to help my fellow students who need a place to stay temporary while waiting for school housing let me know see if I can help.

(below is a copy of my listing in Wanted & Housing)

I am a first year dental student, looking for a female roommate (preferred dental student, non-smoker) to share a large, clean, wood floor, nicely furnished studio has 2 private sleeping areas, has large window, good light. 2-3 blocks from NYUCD, 10 minutes walk to the East Village,4,5,6,N,R, and train

Amenities:
# a/c - heat
# kitchen
# full size refrigerator

# high speed internet

# elevator
# intercom

You'll have a Queen size private bed, bookshelf, closet for $1195

Share living area, kitchen and bathroom.

Living near Times Square with 2 fellow NYUCD freshmen...it's gonna be wicked!

Hey, out of curiosity, are you a current student there or an incoming D1? Also, what is the rate going for waterside plaza? I've heard its insanely expensive there.

For those of us with families, is Staten Island a reasonable commute or should I keep focusing on Brooklyn/Queens?

If anyone has any insight I would love to hear it. Thanks.

Actually watersideplaza is where most dental students live. I'm looking for a roommate for those apartment too but looks like she is looking for a female roomie. Anyone else?? The rent will be cheaper than the dorms if you have a roommate. Its very close and PLUS they accept student loan as your source of income. I heard a lot of other place dont accept that.

You sure waterside is cheaper? This is what I found off their website -

STUDIO
No Avail.

ONE BEDROOM
750 Sq. Ft. $3100/mo.
Immediate Avail.

TWO BEDROOM 2 BATHS
1000 Sq. Ft. $4,400/mo.
Immediate Avail.

THREE BEDROOM 2 BATHS
1200 Sq. Ft. $5400/mo.
Immediate Avail.

If it's cheaper, I don't think it's by much...
The only upside about the dorms is being able to meet more of your classmates.

from nyu housing
26th Street Apartment
Upperclass Tel., Cable, Internet, AC, Kitchen

2 bdrm; 4 students $8,130.00/9 = $903 per month
Single Studio-1 student $18,490.00/9 = $2054 per month
2 bdrm; 2 students $16,260.00/9 = $1806 per month
Shared Studio -2 students $10,150/9 = $1127 per month

Waterside

ONE BEDROOM
750 Sq. Ft. $3100/mo./2 = 1550 + utilities
Immediate Avail.

I think this is a better deal because its not for 9 months and its a much nicer place and its almost as close as 26th street dorms. Only problem is I don't have the other half of the rent yet! Still looking for it! I have a friend who is D1 now and he said a lot of his classmates are there.

I heard you can find a studio for about 1500 around there but you have to be lucky.

that still seems like a tough call, for me at least. i got too use to paying 400/month for my own room during undergrad. hehe 😛

did you send in a housing interest form? or are you just solely looking for housing other than dorms? i'm still debating between the two.

I was lucky enough to go to a school close to home for undergrad i.e. $0/month rent! God bless ucla! I sent in the form and got their reply in mail saturday. It says you wont find out about your room assignment until first week of aug and you have to pay the $ 1000 deposit! what if I dont like what they've assigned?? I dont wannna live in the 2 bedroom 4 roommate option. And definately no where but the 26th street. I am so confused!!! May be I win the lottery and buy a condo in manhattan 🙂

Yeah I'm also a bit concerned. Do all D1 students who received student housing get in at the 26th street residence? The fact that we won't know until August concerns me.

how do brokers and landlords feel about renting to students whose only source of income is loans? i've found tons of "nice" places on craigs list, but am afraid that i will need some income other than loans.

i know the only way to know for sure it to call, but i wanted to get the input from others that may have dealth with this issue in the past.

jb!🙂

They don't feel very good! They rather give it a more "secure" tenant. They usually want to see that your salary is 30x the rent or for guarantor something like 50 or 60x Im not sure. Plus brokers charge 13-15% one year rent as broker fee thats alot of broker fee! I suggest everyone reads this very helpful I think

I just talked to Steve, the guy in charge of housing for dstudents, and he said that the 26th street apartments might not be available to us. They're doing reconstruction this summer. He's not even sure which apartments we will be placed in. 😕

and thats if you are among the chosens! they only give 100 of us housing the rest are on their own! Why do they have to build this school in the middle of manhattan! lol

Are you serious? Oh what luck. I really hope they come through and grant us housing for the 26th street apartment, did he tell you when we'll receive word on where we are assigned?

Nope. He told me to call/email NYU housing to get more information. He said they would know more. All he told me was that when you put down the deposit, you're guranteed student housing, he's just not sure where. I'm going to try to call housing tomorrow and see if I can find out more info. I'll let you guys know if I get any good info from them. 🙂

Thanks for the heads up Jeanette, I'll give a call tomorrow to see what's up as well.

I am a D1 and also looking for a roomate. Waterside Plaza looks like an excellent choice, but there should be cheaper options that would allow for both people to have a room of their own (murray hill, gramercy, midtown areas). If anyone's interested, please contact me at [email protected], thanks!

I am also looking for a roommate. I called the housing ppl and a grumpy man told me that my chances for getting nyu housing are extremely slim (turned in my housing application a few days ago).

waterside is not so nice.

I found a rent controlled apartment on craiglist 1 avenue away from school. Brokers are a way of life in New York, they're like cockroaches - you just can't get rid of them here. Most students live in Waterside (watersideplaza.com), rivergate (can't find the website just reviews http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/NY-New-York-Rivergate-Apartments.html), post illuminaria (http://www.postproperties.com/ApartmentHome/PropertyInfo.aspx?PropertyId=Post Luminaria&Type=PAH) or Peter Cooper Village - Stuy Town (http://www.pcvst.com/pcvst_home.asp)
But if you and your co-signers aren't a US citizen or make >140k a year then good luck. Maybe you can find a roommate who'll pass the credit check.

A lot of students commute from Queens since the rent is half what you pay in Manhattan, but the commute sucks when you're on rotation from 8:30-8 or are a D2 studying for everything

Let see...
- Deadline to cancel campus housing is July 20th
- I won't know where I'll be assigned to until August.
- All I was told is I'm guaranteed housing and nothing else.

I'm from California and totally unfamiliar with New York.
This really scares me because I might get screwed and live far off campus.

Also, I signed up for shared studio at 26th street. Is it possible for them to assign a different type of room that is out of my affordability? (and hence screw me up 😱)

All these uncertainties....I'm tempted to cancel my housing application and find a place off campus. Should I start looking or should I just stick with on campus housing? Please give me some advice, much appreciated!

Last thing... When is the first day we can move into the residence halls? I was told we can move in before the orientation, but they didn't tell me the earliest date we can do so. I sent an email to Dr. Palatta but no reply, called him and he's never there. I need to book a flight to NYC, need to know the date as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Nice to meet you fellow D1 students! 🙂

If we cancel our housing contract, do we get a full refund of our deposit? Any sort of refund? I'm looking to get out of my contract and it would suck if I'm out all that money.

I called today and they said they would. Need to do so by July 20 though.
